Clean, clean, clean....but you knew that.
Another good tip is to buy two long bolts of the same
thread as the head bolts, cut the heads off, grind a
chamfer on the cut ends and slot for a screwdriver. By
inserting these into diagonal corner head bolt holes you
now have alignment pins to start the head on properly. This
saves you from mangling the head gasket by sliding things
around.
Follow the torque patterns like the holy book of your
choice...and come up to them in steps. Start at 20 Lb, then
40, then whatever torque spec is...
Use a composite gasket if available - I like them lots more
than the copper ones...though the copper ones are reusable
if you're desperate.
