Ashes are a good insulator. It's very difficult to start a fire in
our stove when it's just been cleaned. The iron sucks the heat out
of the fire. When there's a layer of ashes on the floor, the fire
will start just by thinking about it. Metalworkers sometimes put
heated parts in ashes to slow the cooling rate, or to keep them hot
while they work on a something else.
