Adding volume to the bottom plate seems a lot of work to fix a few oil
leaks. The advantage is that the rate of filling would slow, the level is
what is important for the oil to be thrown around the box. If the level
is too high there can be significant churning losses and pressure build
up thus raising the leak rate. If removing the plate to fix leaks, make
sure it is flat, particularly around the fixing holes. Do not over
tighten the fixing screws, otherwise the gasket is distorted and squeezed
out of the joint, thus recreating the leak condition.
