Either is fine. Other than the tranny (which, while not as robust as an
SIIa, is still apparently stronger than many of it's competitors), the
differences appear to be cosmetic, and minor at that.
Running lights, side lights on some, interior bits, front grill, etc. All
easily replaced or removed if ya don't like em (including the tranny, from
what I hear). Hmmm....not sure about replacing the dash though....anyone
have an opinion on that one? I have a nice 73 SIII, but the multi-piece
plastic dash certainly makes gauge work tricky. I'd love to replace it
with a simple IIa dash if possible. Possibly more trouble than it's worth
though.
I've never thought of the SIII as being less rugged or simple (at least not
the early SIII's), just a bit more "accessorized". I've also never really
considered the early SIII and the later SIIa as "different trucks". It's
like Land Rover bolted on some trim and a synchro tranny and called the new
SIIa an SIII.
Love my SIII, no regrets here. But I'd also grab a decent SIIa in a
heartbeat (as a friend for the SIII, not a replacement!).

Seriously "Tarted Up" 73 SIII.
