The Ashcroft brings the high range gear ratio up to almost equal with
installing 3.54 diffs front & back while keeping the low range ratios
stock. With 32 inch dia tyres, fourth gear RPM at 65 MPH is 2900 RPM.
This can be OK for people running soft top 88s with 8:1 heads and stock
dia tyres who drive near sea level, mostly on the flats. As you exceed
any of these parameters the harder the engine will have to work to push
those gears and the more you will see of the lower gears.
The conversion is great for those of us who have significantly greater
than stock horsepower to push the taller gears. But I would advise
people driving stock engine LRs that significantly differ from the
ideal conditions to look at an overdrive or 4.1:1 diffs instead.
