    hey there,
brian's '67 88' checking in from cold Connecticut.

Today, I had something happen that I've never heard
of, and frankly, I'm wondering if anyone else has.

As some of you know, this past summer I put a new
(used) frame on because the old one was toast.

Right now, the state of Connecticut has suspended all
inspections because of some issues with the company
that used to handle it. So, today I figured, I'll go
get it registered even though it's currently not
running (problems with the distributor). (You don't
need to have the car present, just the title and
    insurance card).

If some of are wondering why, it's because I live at a
condo complex and I don't like leaving it out there
without any license plates on. I had a 10-day
temporary on it when I first purchased it (Sept. of
2001) so I don't have to worry about a bill of sale.

So I go this morning, and they said I need to have a
VIN checkout, since I bought it in New York (make sure
    it's not stolen, I guess). That's fine, I say.

During smalltalk with the DMV person, I told her that
I had given it a full restoration, including a new
frame. She gave me one of those looks, "A new frame?"
"Yep," I said. "Well, this changes everything." Turns
out, because I changed the frame, I have to get the
absolute entire thing inspected, at a place 90 minutes
    away!

But here's my problem: I understand that there's a VIN
number on the front part of the frame, on the
passenger (right) side. However, I had changed the
front clip with a piece from Rovers North because the
current frame was set up for right-hand drive (it's
used), but my land rover is left-hand drive. Of
course, there's no VIN number on it, nor is there one
on the current frame. That piece that got chopped off
    is long gone.

So I guess my question is: What the heck do I do
now???? Has this ever happened to anyone? Had I known
about the whole frame issue I never would've opened my
mouth. They obviously can't compare the VIN number of
the car with the number on the frame, so I don't know
what they can accomplish with all of this.

Okay, that's all I can gather. Please respond if you
need any clarification. I'm just wondering if you have
or have heard of someone going through this in other
    states, not just Connecticut.

Moral of the story: just look at the DMV people and
    smile from now on.
