It'll be a multi-valve yes, something along the lines of:

Both valves siamesed into one oval port, yes inclined.

Thats your hangup! The 'before' is the finished inlet side (grit-blasted?),
the 'after' is the finished (polished) exhuast side. The 'hole' in the
centre of the 'before' picture will be the fuel injector port.
