Hmmm, I haven't cracked open a series starter, but in my experience on a
number of others I've had to scrape the mica between the contacts on the
armature to get a good contact, not just sanding the brushes. This is
because mica is harder than copper and thus does not wear down as readily in
some cases. Just my 2 bits worth...
