Many of the Rover TDI engines have suffered from loss
of coolant often leading to catastrophic failure.
Seems the hoses burst or the radiator springs a leak.
The TD5 seems to be more prone to physical damage by
overheating. A little overheating didn't necessarily
mean an engine rebuild with the 200 and 300tdi but it
often does on a TD5. Simple solution, religiously
check coolant levels, replace the hoses regularly,
keep an eye on the heat gauge, don't ignore any
puddles of coolant found under the truck and stop
immediately when you see steam coming out of the
engine compartment.
According to the ZA list, a large majority of early
failures were coolant related. A lot of failures on
the 300tdi were timing belt related but that problem
was fixed.
