I am putting an electric winch in place of my Koenig PTO on
the 88, as I need to take advantage of an overdrive. As
part of this transition, I have built a front bumper from
3"x4"x3/16" box tubing. I cut the bumper just outboard of
each framehorn and moved the pieces that are in front of the
fenders up top of the box tube, welding bottom to top. The
effect is to unshroud the front wheel approach like the Moab
type bumpers. Sort of like this --____-- . Anyway, the
Koenig mounts to a "cage", which is turn mounted to the
frame horns where the bumper bolts through, and with clamp
type bolts to the rear of the frame horns near the radiator
support. This leads me to believe I would be smart to rely
on more than the four bumper bolts to hold the winch/bumper
combination on the truck. I am curious if and how anyone
has secured a mounting tray back to the radiator support, or
if it's even necessary. I replaced the bumper mounting
bolts with 4 ea. 1/2" grade 8 bolts. I am either going to
weld a tray on top the bumper which would mount the winch
like you see 90% of them riding around, or put a 1/4" plate
on the vertical behind the bumper and mount the winch
veritically with the top pointing back at the rad. This
way, the winch would pull through the bumper rather than a
plane perpendicular. Any comments?
Thanks - Bryan
