If it's been driven without lube, the only way to tell is pull and inspect.
If you take the chance and just fill with lube its still possible for
something to lock up. This can be ugly for you, the Rover, and anybody
behind you.
If you pull the drain plug and lube drains out then its probably not
nessacary(sp)? to pull for an inspection. I've driven mine with the rear
diff howling for a couple months. Not sure if it was a good idea or not.
Do you have a spare diff you can swap for the howling one? Some hand tools
and a couple hours if you've never done one.
Just remembered when I had a wheel bearing run dry it made more of a
chirping noise from the inner race spinning on the stub axle.
Is there a local Land Rover Club in your area? 99% of the Rover owners I've
met that belong to a club are always interested in meeting and helping new
members.
