I have a 1975 Series 3 109 FFR 24V. I would love to put a pertronix or any
other non-points system in it for obvious maintenance reasons. It is a pain
to find the points and condenser used in the shielded distributor unless
you just order from the UK. It is also impossible to check the dwell angle
with the shielded system unless I come up with a temporary test wire
running to the coil. All of that shielding makes it impossible to just clip
on the multimeter and check values. Don't get me wrong, there are things I
love about the 24v system and those are the reason I have decided to keep
it as designed and not swap in an unshielded distributor. So, back to my
questions.
Does anybody know any cross reference vehicles that use the same points as
the shielded Land Rover 4 cylinder distributor? I'd love to find another
Lucas distributor number that uses the same points. Pertronix said that if
I send my distributor to them that they would test the kits they had and
see if an off the shelf unit would fit. If they find one then I would just
be charged the retail price for the kit and no labor for installation. If
they don't have one that would fit, they would make a custom unit for mine
$$$$. Does anybody have the distributor number handy for the shielded
distributor? My distributor is turned so that I would have to move it to
read the number. Not a big deal but if somebody has the number handy I
would prefer not to spend the time resetting the timing.
Somebody in the UK has to have done this research before. I realize a lot
of these vehicles get swapped to 12v but somebody must keep them 24v.
Thanks and any ideas are welcome.
