109 regulars have 3 more inches at top-of-seat-box height. With the
defender seats in my 109, I fele like I have 4-6 inches more leg room
than in my 88 with either the original or defender seats. In a 109 SW,
you can remove the bar behind the front seats if you have self
supporting seat backs. this allows even more leg room thna I have in my
2-door. Most drivers of standard-seated 88's and 109's are amazed and
disoriented when they sit in my 109. Bill Rice thought my steering
column was different than his. When I had the defnder seats in the 88,
nobody ever thought it was any roomier than with the stock seats. BTW,
i am 6'2" and I don't think my legs are particularly or unusually
short. in the 88", I'm a little cramped but it is very doable and I
have driven it for 12 hours straight many times. But the 109 is a whole
differnet ballgame. In fact, i had an idea to convert a 109 regular
rear bed into an 88 bed, by removing the side panels, cutting the
necessary amount off the back end, replacing the back end panels and
rear cross piece, repositioning the underfloor cross pieces if
necessary, and replacing the side panels with those from an 88. You may
have to remove the wheel well toool boxes and spare holder that are
often found on a 109 regular but the end result would be about 4-6"
less cargo space, and 4-6" more leg room. You would have to weld new
brackets onto for the front part of the tub to mount to the frame
though.
