Because the fill hole on the OD is in near the top of the case, far above
the recommended lubricant level. Overfilling
a gearbox with oil can be as bad as underfilling, as it will cause the oil
to foam, which actually reduces the lubrication on the moving parts. While
a slight overfilling of the Fairey OD will probably not cause any problems,
filling the case all the way to the fill hole will probably result in foaming the
lubricant, and some of the parts will not get the lubrication they need.
