Joe: mine does this. rebuilt rover on a rover made frame, and the whole
relay unit shifts slightly withing the frame hole notwithstanding the top
pinch bolts are tight and the bottom retaining ring is in place. I even
tried adding some brass shim stock between relay and frame. Did reduce
but not eliminate shifting, and did do away with the knock.

Subject: steering relay knock?
Hello,
I recently replaced the original steering relay on my
IIA with a
new unit. I now have a sudden knocking sound that's
only heard when the vehicle is underway and I turn the
steering wheel. I hear it on every sweeping turn of
Santa Cruz's Hwy 17. Working the wheel while the
vehicle is at rest yields no sound or visible ball
joint movement. My new springs are fully torqued,
wheels/ bearings snug and I'm now thinking I see a bit
of lateral movement in the shaft leaving the bottom of
the relay and this shaft is banging around under the
higher forces of actual driving conditions. Anyone
ever have a relay problem like this?
Thanks,
Joe Mulqueen
