Last time I looked, quite some years back, Toro (what you're calling
the Santana, I think) had fewer nylon internal parts than the Fairey,
and had a greater oil capacity. How they've changed since, if at all,
I don't know.

FWIW I need to get one also, and am looking into ordering one from
the UK. If others want to go in with me for an order, perhaps we can
get a bit better price, and shave a bit off the shipping costs.
Anyone else done this recently? What were the savings?
Cheers.

Ok Ed here goes since you asked. Out of the box the D90 is alot more
offroad capable but there are a couple of things where the Wrangler
(known as TJ in Canada as GM owns the wrangler name here) scores. It is
a little more manoeverable with a shorter turning radius and when fitted
with the 6 cylinder will knock spots off the D90 for acceleration.
The D90 scores in axle articulation and ground clearance and over
strength of build. The seating position for tall drivers is better in
the Jeep. If I was buying one for the wife I'ld get the Jeep and for me
the LandRover.

I haven't ordered the weatherstripping from them, but have tried to
get window channeling for my fixed windowed HT. Don't expect to get what
you ordered, or have it fit right if it's correct. It would have only
saved me a 10 or 20 bucks but...

(I ordered the correct size, as described in their catalog. I get it, it
is the wrong size, yet has the right part number. I call back, they tell
me that bassically they don't know anything about what they sell, and give
the manufacturers phone number - which usually they can't provide because
the factory is in who knows what third world country. Anyway, I call the
manufacturer, turns out JCWhitless has got their part numbers labled wrong.
I send back the stripping, saying DON'T just send me the same part number,
it's got to be such and such dimentions, because your stock is labled
wrong. Guess what, I got the same stuff. So after like two months of
waiting, and paying return shipping twice (which BTW they reimbursed me
for) and numerous charges and credits on my card, I've bassically given up
with them. For all the hassle I went through, it wasn't worth it.)

My friend bought a new Jeep Wrangler to replace his Toy**a pickup. The
first time he took it off road the cat. converter sheared off its mountings
so he threw it in the back. By the end of the afternoon, it would no longer
go into reverse or 4wd-lo. He drove straight beck to the dealer, parked it
nose down into a space, handed them the cat, and, after an hour or so,
drove off in a used F**d 4x4 pickup. I don't think stock Wranglers were
ever meant to leave gravel lanes. Another friend's oil pump quit (no
off-roading) and the engine seized before he could get to the shoulder. The
dealership said it wasn't worth fixing and offered him a bMW trade-in; he
took it. YMMV.

afford it @ $4+/+ a gallon!!! Also, the Green Beast needs to be able to

stock. I don't care much for resale as much as I care for viability.
That being said, I'm still looking for opinions.

Disco steel wheels will fit a series LR, they are a very poor choice since
the distance from the mounting face to the iside of the rim is significantly
wider than the standard rims, thereofre the already poor turning circle is
made even greater. The axles on the coil sprung vehicles are wider and
therefore it is not a problem with them. If you want a wide rim go for the
110 forward control or the 130 rim
I think the disco steel rims are the ugliest wheel Land Rover ever made !!

Yup, these look proper on a square LR. There's something to be said for the
classic looks of a LR on the right wheels. The 110/130 wheels are 6.5 inches
wide and have a 2.25 distance between the back face of the mounting plate and
the inside rim of the wheel, I don't know if that helps with the leafers or
not. Anyone know the specs on the new holey-wolf-wheels from LR??

I'll 2nd that. About the only thing they offer is .5 of an inch (over the
110/130 wheel) which if you think about it is negligible when using properly
proportioned LR tyres. (meaning, tall and narrower than expected)

now I don't want to ignite anyone's browser here, but y'all with floatation
tyres just look goofy. they may work great in moab, but elsewhere, they look
goofy. aw hell, fire 'em up; they look jeepish too.

A number of bearings were in nylon cages. I can't remember what else.
As I said, this was some years back, about 10 or so, so they could
very well have changed the design in response to the Toro product. I
wonder if they increased teh oil capacity also.

Subject: Diesel back to petrol cconversion.

Hi all - just a little question for the group

The first Land Rover I bought back in May this year came with a
Perkins 4203 (in the back!). With the time that has been available
(due to moving and changing job) the engine is now on its mounts but
that's it.

Now for the big question - if I was to take that back out again,
with the thought of putting a V8 in instead, how much more work am I
looking at? Obviously the fuel system would need flushing but other
than that I don't know. It has been mentioned that the vehicle was
probably a 6 cylinder originally but again I don't know if this
helps. The one thing that worries me is that the drivers side engine
mount has been trimmed to make the Perkins fit (the previous Perkins
that was in it before I got my hands on the vehicle). Will this just
need a new mount welding onto the chassis?

The Rover is a 1973 S3 LWB station wagon - which is why I would
rather have a V8 than the Perkins.

If I could make a success of this I would probably consider changing
the 2.25 petrol in the 2A for a V8 as well so any help in this
matter would be greatly appreciated

TIA

Kindest regards

Alan.

Haven't seen the pictures in the Haynes manual, but there are quite

hello list,

i would like to ask about going off road into mud,
would decreasing tyre inflation help traction on mud, especially the clay
type of mud? i ask because recently on my way back from our farm, i was
driving along the ridge of some rice fields to get to the road from inside
the farm and i slipped into the the canal of the field, on wheel was in the
canal and the other tyres couldn't get enough traction to back up. had to
dig out the mud from the forward diff and push the truck out. i read about
deflating the tyres when going on rocks so was wondering if it works for
mud as well?

thank you,
