Subject: Breathers--The final solution??

Maybe the final solution to the leaking seal problem on all the gearbox,
differentials, etc. is to mearly connect a full time 12 VDC vacuum pump to
all those areas. Since some will have more air leak than others you may
have to connect each item to the vacuum pump through a sequence operated
solenoid valve. For connections, use the existing vent on the top of each
gearbox to prevent sucking up the lubricant. Maybe you could just connect
all those points to the intake manifold vacuum connection but I see other
problems developing in an already problem prone area.

So what do you think???

Try Howard Raschke at Mateco 713-692-3888 (a Koenig distributor who

Well, I have to set the record straight. This definitly is not true. There
are a lot of LR mechanics since it must be a good business, having all this
series trucks around, BUT the vast majority of mechanics wont even touch a
LR, not because they cant deal with it, but because they are too rough and
knuckle killers. They generaly prefer working on flimsy hondas and toyotas
and dealing with computers rather than busting their "pencil holders" to get
a nut off a LR.
Maybe this guy's house is located at some beach or remote area, where the
only mechanic HAS to deal with LR's daily. That could be the case.
About the other matter, Isuzu's parts, that isn't true either. There are at
least 15-20 places to find new original Isuzu parts, and Troopers are a
plague here. There are also a similar number of places where you could find
used Isuzu parts.
This is just a clear example of how un-informative media can be.

British Pacific has a few military 2-1/4L petrol engines sitting for

Perhaps smoother on nice cool stable days but the thing sure bounces around
on a hot day. It's been a while since I flew the dear old Beaver (early
70's) but I think it's probably a lot louder than the 88. Like Land
Rover's

 >I still think the "add-oil while in flight" tube is a nifty idea that land
rover should have adopted. In LR's case, one would have had multiple fill
tubes under the center seat... oil, tranny, od, transfer case...

The "add oil while in flight" theory regarding the Beaver's oil filler is a
bit of a myth. If you've ever taken one off, or had one come off, in
flight, it is NOT a pleasant experience. Hot engine oil pretty much sprays
over the entire left side of whoever is sitting in the passenger seat. Even
having the wrong gasket inside the cap (the Cessna 180 oil cap gasket is
almost the same size and sometimes gets inserted in a Beaver cap by
accident) results in oil being forced out past the cap, down the tube, and
onto the left shoe of the person in the right seat.

The location of the oil tank more or less dictated having the filler tube
where it is. Having the filler tube come up inside the cockpit is a
convenience in that you don't have to remove the cowl to get at it, but it
is not intended to be used to add oil during flight unless you've run out of
oil, in which case taking the cap off will not cause much of a problem as
there will be little inside to spray out.

Under normal conditions, a Pratt & Whitney R-985 can burn up to a quart of
oil an hour without your having to get concerned about it. The Beaver has a
maximum endurance of about 5 hours with wingtip fuel, so it's doubtful that
you would need to add any oil during a flight as you would use at most only
a little over a gallon of oil during that flight. Any oil pressure problems
in flight will most likely be caused by failed hoses, couplings, or
connections, in which case adding oil via the filler tube will be of little
help. But because of the radial's appetite for oil, it is VERY important to
check the Beaver's oil level before each and every flight. However, taking
the cap off while the engine is running is NOT recommended, as there's a lot
of pressure built up in the tank.

I have a lot of time flying Beavers (on floats, never flown one on wheels),
and I can tell you the Beaver has one habit that the Land Rover does not, or
should not if it's bolted together properly. Because of the Beaver's slow
airspeed (110 mph on floats), short fuselage, and long wings, it tends to
wallow around in any kind of turbulence. Not just bounce around with the up
and down-drafts but yaw from side to side. This tendency is especially
pronounced if you're carrying fuel in the wingtip tanks. From the pilot's
point of veiw, it's best to just let the plane find its own way with a bit
of guidance now and then to keep it going in the desired direction at more
or less the desired altitude. Trying to correct every little wiggle and
roll is just about impossible and generally ends up aggrevating the
situation even more. However, letting the plane "do its thing" is not
particularly nice for the passengers, particularly for the ones in the aft
row of seats. So I'm not sure I'd say the Beaver's ride is smoother than
the Land Rovers. Less harsh, yes, but not necessarily smoother.

Very true!

When I was in jr. high/high school, I worked on Beechcraft 18's, and AT-6's,
and it's amazing how long a 985 can run past TBO! In fact, they sometimes had
even better fuel/oil consumption!

The 1340 - you could just about say the same for it.

Hi All!!

Two answers-

Luis mentioned the rubbers were $130 for each door; think Frank said
they cost him $45 a door.

Paul asked if they glued or riveted on-Glued on.

Myself-I got 25 feet of weather-stripping at Pep Boys for $25 and glued
it in-had 8 inches left after doing both doors. Only problem is that the
new is thicker than old-bit harder to shut doors!! Haven't checked the
operation in rain yet-no rain to speak of since August!!!

Along same lines-I replaced the vent seals back in May when I repainted
"Aardvark"-it's a real bugger to close the vents now; the "Gen-U-Wine"
seals seen to be thicker than the old. Not a problem during this last
summer, had the vents open 24/7. But now that it's getting cooler out,
have to have someone push in on the vents from the outside whilst I
screw the vents shut. How long does it take for the seals to "Break-in"?

Are D-90 rubbers glued on or riveted on?? (*ouch*)

Actually they are pressed onto the door flange by ex-dwarf tossing
championship has-beens.

No need for glue, as it would eventually get to the installers.

For a series truck, you'd have to grind off the little bent-over lip on
the door flange to get a good fit. The PO tried to use these on my truck
and ended up ruining one before giving up. Otherwise they work OK.

Re: Spark Plugs:

Take a look at the OVLR Website - it has parts listings for both.

http://www.off-road.com/OVLR
 will get you there.

I believe that the 8:1 calls for the same spark plug as a Rangie - the RN11YP4

Does anyone know of the website that lists the different rims
from the Series, their widths, diams and offsets? I seem to
have misplaced the bookmark. After this weekend, I'd like to
get slightly larger wheels to get my diffs and spring mounts
off the ground a little more. I'd also like a little bit more
offset than what's available on my little 15" rims. Other than
that, I like the 15" rims, but it's hard to find anything around
32" tall for a 15" rim. (anything that I like, anyway)

I've never looked for rims before... what do you have to look
for if you have warn hubs (big hole in the middle?) and has
anyone tried the Disco steel rims or the NATO rims that
Atlantic British sells?

thanks.

Aloha everyone.
Was wondering, has anyone done a frame over recently and still have the old
frame lieing around and do not know what to do with it?

Ya' see the vehicle I am going to get was involved in an accident and the
right front section of frame is bent pretty bad, from the rear spring hanger
to just behind the horn needs replacing. The rest of the thing is rock
solid. I am wondering if anyone has a frame lying about with the front 4
feet or so in good shape. If so would you consider hacking off just the
front 4' of right side rail? I am thinking from the transmission xmember
forward and cut off all the xmembers and outriggers. Then just have a
6"x4"x4' package to mail. The vehicle in question is a 1970 S-IIa 88", but
I believe that a 109 would work for what I need.

If you think you can help, let me know how much you want for your time and
effort and where you are and I will figure the best way to ship. I know
that the USPS will mail it for approx $60 based on the weight from the left
coast to here.

over here we have Disco steels on everything from Ser (my Son) with
freewheeling hubs, to 110 (mine).
They're dead cheap because all Discos were delivered to dealers on steels and
if they were to have alis the dealer had to fit 'em. As just about everyone
wanted posing alis there are lots of steels no-one except those of us in the

I've got General Grabbers 235/85s on mine. Dunno the exact height, but they

Craig from Australia asked:

When the engine has reached operating temperature and is switched off,
it
will not idle and seems to only want to run on 2 or 3 cylinders.
Electricians cannot seem to pinpoint it, neither can my local Landrover
dealer.

HUH???

When the engine is switched off it is not supposed to idle, should come
to a stop. Are the symptoms you are describing , "running-on" or
"Dieseling"?

Or do the Aussie engines have a secret device to counter effect the
Coriolis affect of the Earths rotation being different from what we have
here in the Northern hemisphere? (sorry, poor attempt at humor:-)), and
this is causing the problem?

Seriously; If it's "running-on" you are talking about, it's normally
caused by either carboned up head, timing off, or overheating. But then
with your computer controlled vehicle, who knows!!

Subject: Applying Waxoyl Q's

Trying to get the chassis ready for winter. Ordered the waxoyl, and it's
here. Since this is all new to me...

- Do I need to remove every bit of surface rust from the chassis before
applying the waxoyl? Or do I just use a wirebrush to remove the loose stuff
and then coat away.

- What about coating the front portion of the chassis (you know, the
rust-free portion already covered in oil.) Will later oil-spray wash away
the waxoyl? Is it necessary to use the waxoyl there since I have an already
coated frame?

- should I coat the fuel-tank?

- should I coat the aluminum floorboards as to cover the nuts and bolts?

My main concern is the salt spray in the winter and what it will do the the
vehicle...

Thanks.

Me too. Just about time to take the soft-top off. And I guess it's too early
to start posting the daily highs in the desert but it was about 98 F / 36.7 C
today.

It's a dirty job... but someone's got to do it.

Subject: RE:Re[2]: My diesel is letting off air

I have bought the Turbo 2.5 and also the norma aspirated 2.25.

I was told that some blowby is normal for the Turbo 2.5 but it indicated worn
rings on the 2.25. I have had the 2.25 for 4 years now and it always smoked a
bit from the crank case tube.

In my opinion you will not damage the engine as the blowby is just combustion
air
passing by the rings and into the crankcase.

I also was wondering when it was time to change rings as my 2.25 when pressed
manages 60mph and is not at all dead.

Thanks
