From: bobnsueb@maxinet.com (Bob and Sue Bernard) Date: Sat, 26 Sep 1998 07:33:03 -0700 Subject: balancing tires Hi, I occasionally mention this because I've had it make the difference on more than one car. 2 Land-Rovers and one Pontiac(ralley wheels). When having the wheels balanced, be sure the shop uses a lug adapter to mount the wheels on the balancer! The center hole is just not true enough, and they all use the quick way by mounting with a cone in the center hole. I learned this with the Pontiac ralley wheels after the tire shop replaced 3 of 4 tires and they discovered the reason. When they mount with the center cone, they think it's balanced then if they dismount and remount on the balancer it is not. I've had them tell me wheels were bent and they used a large amount of weights. After hacing them use the lug adapter, the wheels were no longer "bent" and they balanced fine. BTW, the only time I had tires not need weights were Michelins. One of four needed a small weight. We're supposed to stay on the trails where others have driven, not aimlessly across the tundra, fields, and sand dunes, thereby damaging fragile ecosystems. Tread-Lightly! has a semantics problem in that they want you to to stay ON the roads and trails when OFF-roading. It may be too late to change this unfortunate terminology, but our LR club on the club decal says "Tread-Lightly! On Back-Roads" reinforcing the concept of staying ON the roads, and differentiating between paved roads by calling unpaved roads "back roads" (small difference, eh?) Anyway, If I was asked if our RR has ever been Off-Road, I would certainly be able to say, "Never! Except for the time..." Most back roads and trails are "roads", even the Rubicon Trail which is a county road, although not well maintained and barely passable. Hi Folks, I'm off to Alaska until late November, to start filming on my seemingly ever lasting Alaska tv series project. Much as I'd like to take all of you with me, my server cannot cope with 120 unopened e-mails a day, so I have decided to unsubscribe. But I'll be back, and in the meantime there's still life at the farm, my family will be holding the fort so they - and I can be reached at this e-mail address. I look forward to december, new talks on the same subjects, go easy on the lawyer jokes for Luis' sake, and keep my stool by the bar warm and my beer cold! Hi! I have opened the top lid/inspection panel and emptied out the oil that was there. It looks nice, but there is some oil sludge left stuck in the bottom og the overdriev housing. Is there any way I can wash out the oil sludge safely. My first guess was to use flush it with white spirit and then dry it and refill it with gear oil, but I am not sure if any white spirit residue will harm the oil. I,ve been told to have them balanced with this adapter also as the centers on my wheels weren't true. However on the other side, I just mounted two tires myself last night. I was, and did go 4 wheeling today, and as I didn't have time to balance them last night I was going to do it today after I got back. However I didn't feel any vibration at all, from 0 up to 65 mph, so I'm not going to balance them. I would care to bet that they aren't balanced, but if I can't feel it is there really any point. From: "David and Cynthia Walker" <wahooadv@earthlink.net> Date: Sat, 26 Sep 1998 11:58:27 -0700 Subject: Seeing the Series Rigs I have to side with TeriAnn on this one completely and perhaps a bit more strongly. In June and July I drove over 7,000 miles through most ever western state and never saw one series truck on the open road..........sure I have seen a few in Seattle and one that was abandoned on land in Idaho, but not a single one on the road. In the past 9 months I have driven 15,000 miles, through 11 states and two provinces and never saw a Land Rover out there - I went and saw LR's at owners home's, business's, show's, event's BUT, was never just surprised by seeing one "in the open". So, where all of you? Talking with the local folks and the fellow who owns the Land Rover repair business in this town, I get the impression that most never roam much further than 150 miles from home EVER, in their life! I was also told that many see not more than 300-500 miles in a year. I, like TeriAnn, use my Land Rover as my daily mode of transportation - this is it, I do not have another car (although I am looking at a Unimog for amusement). I also tend to go on longer trips with my LR. So, what is stopping the rest of you from taking these longer journeys? Too loud? - insulate the cabin area. Too rough? - graphite between the leaves (this worked when my wife was 8 months pregnant!) or load her down! What, not ready or reliable enough? Not pretty enough? Too pretty? Oh, I almost forgot...too slow? - what were you expecting when you bought a fancy tractor with WW2 engineering? Since this is our 'virtual pub' - I am going to put it out there in the pub like manner...... "Gawd, look at yea - yeh all have stickers that say - 'I would rather push my Land Rover a mile than ride in a Jeep' - yet yea all drive home in your Mazda's and BMW's" Well, I would say something like that, if we were in a pub - and I don't drink beer. Like TeriAnn and what seems, a few others, I enjoy the Land Rover enough to NOT make it into a hobby vehicle......the day it drops to that status, I will put her up for sale - and I hope that the next owner gets plenty of use from her. When they rolled off the line, the workers and management never thought that these would become "status icons" or "dust collectors". A point that was rather well put is "how many are there that just want the image of the lifestyle that the symbol represents?" - We live aboard a cruising sailboat - well, strangely enough, because we have already cruised some 15,000 miles........there are people who live aboard boats thinking that it represents "the cruising lifestyle, freedom" or they believe that they will some day go some where. I use my Land Rover for daily travels, am an amateur paleontologist, hold a degree in Outdoor Recreation.......the LR fits my lifestyle. I also LOVE fixing and tinkering with vehicles - ask those who know/meet me! Probable seems a bit odd, whining about not seeing others out there - but I don't want to just 'hear' about LR's on a computer (the pasty shadow of reality) - I want them in the real world!
