If you clean all the grime and oil off it, you'll have to paint it.

Alan,

Not everyone will agree with that statement, unless you're refering to
swill like "Passport". So let's have a taste test at

Mid-Atlantic You bring some of your favorites and I'm sure there will be a
number of Scotchs there to compare with.

I've never used whisky as a penetrant (red wine and candle light works better)
but I did use Berg's leftover Rum to clean the oil off my brake shoes before I
left Silver Lake. Worked nicely too.

Sandy has said pre-registered vehicles ONLY at the rally.

pre-registration ends Sept 1

SANDY HAS SAID:
THE EVENT WILL BE LIMITED IN SIZE TO PRE-REGISTERED VEHICLES ONLY.

you have 1 week to pre-register

i have a copy of the form, if you need one, email me and i can fax copies

there is a work weekend labor day weekend, all are welcome,
contact Nancy McCaig - LR88@aol.com for details.

here's sandy's text as printed in the OVLR NL:
October 2-4 - ROAV's Mid-Atlantic Rally at Penlan Farm. This year's event
will be lower key: a gathering as opposed to a formal and elaborate rally.
The event will also be limited in size to pre-registered vehicles only.
While the Aluminum Man Triathalon will not be held, ROAV has gained access
to an additional 400 acres to play upon, including a tract down to the
James River. To take advantage of this ROAV will be setting up a connect
the dots event across this land. The Trials course will also be open for
anyone that wishes to try it. The cost to attend the Mid-Atlantic Rally
will be $15 per vehicle. Meal costs are $15 per person for Saturday's

Subject: Re: Centre PTO Rotational Speed

I own a 68 SERIE II A, and I would like to know at what speed the Centre
PTO at the rear side of the transfer case rotates in fourth gear for
example when the engine runs at 2000 revolutions/min, and if possible in
what direction : clockwise seen from behind ?.

(It is because I would like to put an stronger alternator on a big pulley
 for my winch.)

******************
Well, on my 101FC, the rear PTO output rotates at the same speed and in
the same direction as the rear driveshaft. This is to provide synchronous
power to the trailer drive, which uses a complete 101 rear axle assy.

Subject: Welding Info

Hello all, just wanted to add my .02$ to the welding thread. I have been
doing Gas, Mig, and Arc welding on auto's for over 10 years now and think
that the DIY who is just starting out would best be adviced to purchase a
quality wirefeed machine that also has a gas option.
I have used my wirefeed on everything from thin body panels to 1/4 plate
and find it the easiest to operate and feel that it was the easiest and
quickest method to learn. When doing body/sheetmetal work it is a simple
matter to use a thin, flux core wire, turn down the heat and run either
continuous beeds, or by drilling holes in the top panel and then filling the
hole, form spot welds. When using thicker pieces of metal it may be
neccessary to make multiple beeds, thus taking longer then using an Arc
welder, but with the same quality of weld. The gas attachment option allows
you to use Argon shielding gas when welding, turning the wirefeed into a Mig
welder. The argon serves two purposes: first it keeps the area surrounding
the weld cool, preventing warping (perfect for sheet metal). Second, the
gas will shield the weld from inpurities. Just make sure to use plain (not
fluxed) wire when using gas. Also gas is required when welding other
metals. Use gas and changing the wire it is possible to weld aluminum.
The most important thing to look for in a wirefeed/mig welder is the
duty cylce. This is listed as a percentage and represents the how long you
can run a bead and then let the machine cool down. This is based upon a 10
minute cycle. So if you have a machine with a 20% duty cycle, you weld for
2 minutes, cool for 8. If you can, get a machine with at least a 50%
rating. Also try and get one with an on board circiut breaker, so when you
do weld for longer then the rated duty cycle (and you will) the machine
kicks off instead of blowing a fuse in the garage.
Also, find a machine that has adjustable dials for selecting the wire
speed and heat setting, instead of just a 2-3 position switch. This will
allow for a greater deal of control and better results.
Oxy/Acetelyn is great for cutting & bending, heating stuck parts and
doing brazing work, but stick to electric for your structural work.
Arc welding is great for heavy duty work, but the same jobs can be
completed with a wire feed, it will just take a bit longer. If you budget
allows and you already have the wirefeed and gas set ups, then go for it.
As others have mentioned, practice, practice, practice. Where to find
scraps to practice on? Go to a local construction site and ask if you can
pick through the scrap pile. I have even been able to find some 8-10'
pieces of tubing, angle, and channel from some sites. Go to your local
library or bookstore and find a how-to book on welding. Haynes publishes a
pretty good one. Take the bits and pieces you scroung and weld them up.
Compare your bead to the pictures in the books. Then grab the angle grinder
and cut the weld back apart. Look carefully for airpockets, voids, or
impurities in the weld. Then weld em back up again. Try sticking some of
your "art" into the bench vise, grab a pair of channel locks and try and
bend the piece until it breaks. Take a sledge to some of your work.
Finally and most important SAFETY!!!!! DIY welding is a great way to
save some $$, but trying to save a few dollars doing a minor repair and
ending up with a lump of melted metal for a vehicle or worse, a bit of red
hot slag bored into your body, is not worth it. Make sure to get the best
Eye protection you can. Electric welding can cause severe burns to the eye,
even possible blindness. Get a good pair of welding gloves, and if you can
swing it I also recomend a good leather welding smock. Electric welding can
also cause burns (similar to sun burns) on the skin so make sure to wear
more then a thong and teva's when working. And ALWAYS keep a fire
extinquisher near to hand.

That's good enough for now...the rotor should be pointing to one o'clock
(when viewed from the side) the contact for the #1 cylinder.
Coincidentally, the rotor will also point to #1 plug. Cheers

Would anybody on the list happen to have, or know where I can get (aside from
possibly Blanchard) a set of jerrycan boxes, as used on the NATO/MOD

I'd like to have a set on my 109 - not so much for carrying jerrycans (great
for long trips), but they make fantastic storage spaces!

Alternatively, drawings/measurements/types of materials needed would suffice.

Subject: Re: Grey market

Grey market (or, Gray market) refers to vehicles brought into the USA, that
originally did/do not comply with the standard Dept. of
Transportation/Environmental Protection Agency regulations.

Many of these vehicles were brought in under personal import exemptions, and
others were "snuck" into the country long after these exemptions expired (gee,
there sure are alot of Mini 25's here, with pre-1968 VIN numbers...).

As most vehicles imported to the USA after 1973 MUST comply to these
regulations, and many states require emissions testing, purchasing one of thee
vehicles can sometimes be a dicy thing: if it doesn't comply, you have to make
it comply = $$$$$, while others are no problem at all.

No Hybrid, only because I don't have the body etc, but a stretch to a 109
sounds too cool.

However, with the $100.oo Porta-Power hydraulic tool kit, the bending modulii
of the various sheet metal parts which make up the upper body can be
experimented with.

With the Connivance of Alfa Parts Exchange and My favorite design team, (BFMI
brute force and MASSIVE ignorance), I am now at the point where...
1. The tailgate is on and the framework almost ready for the Rear Window.
(that would be window, 98 except it will work)
2. The Front Windshield is in, and the upper body is straight or almost. (
FWIW, all the pillaars will deform if you hit something, perhaps some interior
roll cage is in order. a couple of hoops can't be too tough.)
3. The lights are almost replaced after a minor snafu which resulted in two
RH units (front and rear =2) being delivered computer input error at the
parts supplier.
4. The bent and destroyed muffler/resonator is replaced and the unit passed
Smog and was transferred with minimal errors by DMV, ( the Clerk was convinced
that what I wanted to do was to transfer from PO to PO.)

Any way what I'll end up with is a 87 RR with a rough look in the near future.
The trails will be mine, I will rollup the windows and not care what I hit
underneath.
I will indulge in snatch recoveries and care little what rips off
I will emulate the typical J**p owner but without the drool, and I seldom
drink alcohol (while driving).

Have a good weekend.

Sandy, Lucas made a dynamo with a hydraulic pump on the back to power
steering. They were used on a lot of British cars in the sixties

Kirk, you do not say which model Rover you have just acquired, but since
you mention a tacho I assume it is a Range Rover, the clunk you refer to is
possibly coming from worn suspension bushes

The miltary type gauge heads are probably from later vehicles and the
instruments will be the compensated voltage type, you would need to change
the fuel tank sender to the later type and add the 10 volt regulator.
The instrument you need was fitted to Land Rovers from 1955 ( 86's) to
around 66 so there are thousands of used ones out there, In fact I probably
have some in my electrical parts box

Didier, the PTO output speed is linked directly to the mainshaft, in top
gear it will rotate at engine speed since top is direct drive. , it will
rotate anti clockwise when viewed from the rear.
