From: "Johan A. Lammers" <LammersJ@zhdev.nl> Date: Fri, 14 Aug 1998 13:46:07 +0200 Subject: difficult to steer LR 109 I'm a newcomer in LRO digest daily. It seems a good place to contact other LRO's and exchanging information with them. Since januari 1998 ,I own a Series III 109" safari station-wagon. I use the car mostly for fun and for campingtrips. There's a bed, cupboards, kitchen etc build-in the car and it has on official registration as a camper. But thw dutch Mr. Taxman doesn't agree. Last month I made a trip to Danmark en Sweden. We reached the places we wanted and came home allright, but a lot off times i got a bit sweaty behind the wheel because of the difficult steering. Especialy when the road had those tracks (made by heavy traffic going over the same piece of road over and over again) in there, and when it was very windy. Or in one case both. I got swept from one side of the road to the other side. I'm aware of the fact than i'm not driving a LR is real work. But i think that this is to much. Maybe someone has a similar experience or has a good suggestion. I have Goodrich Trackedge tires fitted (750x16) , also freewheeling hubs. Do i have the wrong tires, or are my swivelpins badly worn because of misuse of the freewheelhubs ?. hans - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -[ <- Message 2 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 980815 -> Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]
From: Alan_Richer@motorcity2.lotus.com Date: Fri, 14 Aug 1998 08:08:01 -0400 Subject: Re: difficult to steer LR 109 Hello! Steering problems don't always have to be the swivel pins - check the cheap things first. Top up the oil in the steering relay (in the front chassis) and the steering box. This may help in itself. If not, then proceed to find out what's wrong. Get the front of the car up on jacks and start by moving the tyres in and out at the edges - first up and down, then side to side. If there is movement up and down, have a partner step on the brakes and see if it goes away. If the movement goes away with the brakes on, then the wheel bearings may not be right (loose, bad). If it doesn't, then it may be the swivel pins. If you get movement side to side with a clunking noise, you may have a bad ball joint in the steering arms - try and find it. Other things to check is the adjustment of the steering box and the steering relay - wear in either of these two parts can cause funny steering, as the wheels are not in complete control due to wear. Lastly, check the arms on the steering relay itself. if the bolts are loose and the arms can move side-to-side, then the steering will drift. Basically, it's common sense - find the loose bits and tighten them up properly by replacing parts or otherwise. I've got their side and roof trims fitted in the D90. I'm quite happy but for a few points: 1. Measuring and cutting the trim for the windows was absolute hell! Both side windows and alpines were difficult to get the holes in the right place and the technique seems to be make the whole too small and open it up with a file - tgakes a very long time and is very dusty. 2. Panel fit is very poor... Some panel gaps I can get a little finger in. 3. Don't take thier advise and fit loft insulation (glass fibre) behind the panels for sound/temperature insulation. You can't fit the panels if you do that because they bulge out! After a couple of hours getting covered in glass fibres I gave in with that idea and fitting standard heavy duty felt sound proofing behind the panels. 4. Despite all that it does look quite good but next time I do do a few things different. Hi all, My 1980 LW has had all its brake pads and drums renewed about 5000 miles ago. For the last 3/4 months, braking at low (sub 25MPH) speeds results in horrific squealing from the wheels. I checked the front drums and pads, they look like brand new, washed off all the dust (minimal) and drove it around with the same results. As I remember, the squeal was the original reason for changing the brakes in the first place and the infernal thing is back with a vengance. I have never heard another LR ever squeal- I do see/hear many as I live in the north of UK, near rural land, besides its probably not a charecteristic-the British army is hardly gonna sellect a rapid deployment vehicle with a propensity to cause explosive diarrhea each time the brakes are touched!!. I would like to first of all thank those that responded to my inquiry about suspension and carbs. I am still looking for info, so further replies would not be wasted. I have four issues that I would like to table in this list: 1. Engines: I have the standard 2.25 l petrol engine with 8:1 heads that have been shaved so compression is supposed to be about 9:1. There still isn't enough power for my liking, even though the engine was completely rebuilt ($$$) by a professional only 7000 km ago. I would like to know what my options are for a replacement motor with little or no modifications to the frame because it is galvanized. I understand that Santana used a 3.4 l engine at one point, does anyone know about it? Could one still get parts? 2. Brakes: I am also dissatisfied with the stopping power of my brakes. Currently I have the larger drums on the front (from a 109") of my 88". They do stop me, but the effort to do so is excessive IMHO. What can one do? Could I use a booster of some sort? I see that TI Console has bolt on DISC brakes for sale. http://www.ticonsole.nl/ Has anyone tried them? I am sure they have to be -at least- marginally better than drums. 3. Military rotory light switch: I have one of these in my civilian model 88". Does anyone have a wiring diagram for neat little things like these (more than in the Haynes for example :-) 4. Spare wheel: Do any of you actually drive off road with them on the bonnet? I couldn't see a thing. I finally pulled it off and threw it in the back (less leg room than before!). How else can one mount a tire out of the way? I have a tailgate with the NATO package. I am thinking that upright directly behind the seat box is about the best. One thing to think about. In the Rovers that I've heard had engines with lots more HP added, they owners started snapping halfshafts and tranny shafts a lot more often. Now it depends upon what you want to do with your LR. If your engine has more hign end HP, then you will loose the low end torque of the 2.25. I find it a lot more easy to idle over things at <1000 rpm with my 77hp 2.25 in my Series than in my 190HP 3.9 V8 in my Disco 5speed. > 2. I believe the part number is 7226 from Atlantic British. They call it a power brake vacuum booster in the last Roverlog. Is that what you are referring to? Engine choice. I like the slow torque of the 2.25 l petrol engine a great deal for most instances. The problem came when I tried to ascend a very steep winding path (more like a goat trail). I got up most of the way but stalled due to lack of power at a point near the top. I did make it over the top after getting going again. I know I had more than enough traction, I just lacked the power to get up easily. Also, on the highway it would be nice to have a little more power. I don't intend to drive faster than I already do (about 90kph), but I have to crawl to get over the hills. On some of the bigger hills I am down to 60kph by the time I reach the top. I feel a little bit threatened by all the traffic flying by; it can't be safe. I don't want to give you the wrong idea. A 350 isn't what I am looking for. I dunno what it is in the ABP numbers, but power brake vacuum booster sounds right. I hooks a vacuum line to the manifold or carb for the assist. It will probably only fit on a Series III brake master cylinder. (This is a guess since I haven't tried to do that with a SIIA). To see how a Series III brakes, you might try to find a SIII owner in your area with brakes in good working order and try them out before you fork out the $$$ for the parts. The only times it's a bother is going over the ridge of hill, and rock climbing. There are parts available to mount it directly behind the rear seats. A real pain to get in and out. Check your brake shoes to see if they are "glazed". If they are, remove the shine by gentle sanding. If the squeal stops but then returns you will have to replace the shoes. When new shoes are fitted it is important that the first few hundred miles are confined to reasonably gentle braking to allow the brake material to "cure" properly. Harsh braking during this period will cause them to glaze and they will then squeal. Were your shoes Genuine or top quality brand when replaced? Udhi, I had a similar problem when I replaced the front drums on my SIIA 109". After I posted a question just like yours, someone else (who bought their drums from the same supplier) answered me and said his similar problem had been solved by having the drums skimmed, which is a drag to have to do to brand new drums, but it worked for him and it worked for me. So I considered it a $15 well-spent to be able to stop at intersections and be stared at because of what Mrs. Merdle looks like, not what she sounds like. From: caloccia@senie.com Date: 15 Aug 1998 02:57:39 -0000 Subject: MISSING / LOST messages Hi, There are other reasons why you might not receive some messages that show up in the digest, like the 'real-time' and 'digests' had some differences (the real time being more-restrictive, to prevent looping, etc.) and ISPs do drop mail. If they report your account as an 'unknown user' you've got a fairly high chance of getting automatically unsubscribed, and if there are persistant 'host unknown' messages you may get moved from a real time list to a digest. The following change was implemented earlier in the week and has been swallowing 20 messages / day on the RRO and LRO list... Cheers, -B >From: caloccia@senie.com >Date: 13 Aug 1998 17:09:55 -0000 >Subject: changes in list mail handling Hi All, After the looping mail the other day, a change was made to prevent any such occurances happening again, but it MAY AFFECT YOUR REPLIES !! If you REPLY (to individual messages) and FORWARD the whole message, your reply WILL BE DROPPED. You may avoid your reply being dropped if you cut out the parts of the forwarded message which are not necessary for your reply. (e.g. if you only include a few important lines of text from the message which you are replying to). If you include parts of the head, or parts of the three line footer (with the LIST info), the ENTIRE REPLY will be DROPPED.
