I saw like a week ago a "reddish orange SIIA" with "what looked like a

another one.

Hello. I'm new here and I have a few questions. I love LRs-I think
they're really cool, but I am interested in one.... That said, and being
a current owner of recently deceased Toyota LandCruiser, I have to
decide on whether to get an older TLC FJ40 or a Series LR.

1. For a college student, is a series too cost prohibitive. I know TLCs
are notorious for rusted tubs, but as far as mechanicals go, they're
rock solid. I have heard many stories about rovers being poorly built
but rustproof. That's why I came here, to the source.

2. Any clubs in VA? I belong to the TLCA and there are two different
clubs in VA, with plenty of nice Cruiser people to share info with. A
few live near me. I have only seen 4 Series rovers here, and I think
there might be too little interest in my area as far as parts,
assistance, etc.

3. If rovers are hard to maintain, then explain they're prominence in
the rest of the world, besides the U.S. There must be something to
them....

Now please do not take this long post as negative. I love all 4wd
vehicles and think they are all good (well, except new jeeps), but I do
not want to incite anyone on this list. One day, I plan to have at
least one Rover, a few LCs, and maybe an old Bronco or IH Scout. Thanks
for listening to me....

Hi All,

After the looping mail the other day, a change was made to prevent any
such occurances happening again, but it MAY AFFECT YOUR REPLIES !!

If you REPLY (to individual messages) and FORWARD the whole message,
your reply WILL BE DROPPED. You may avoid your reply being dropped if
you cut out the parts of the forwarded message which are not necessary
for your reply. (e.g. if you only include a few important lines of text
from the message which you are replying to).

If you include parts of the head, or parts of the three line footer
(with the LIST info), the ENTIRE REPLY will be DROPPED.

My annual maintenance cost are very low. and have been for the last 3
years. Just pay careful attention to the frame when looking to buy a daily
driver.

There are clubs all over. You just happen to be close to one of the best
clubs around:

Hogwash! Just a bit different, and extremely simple. Land-Rovers have
been abused and maintained in the rough by researchers and the like with
little or no mechanical experience.

I have owned FJ40's , CJ's and Rovers (I must admit never a series vehicle
though) I currently own a D90 and nothing(under$50,000) on the face of the
earth compares in off road capability right off the show room floor. This
winter an FJ40 came with a group of Rovers from Hybrids to Range Rovers and
D90 After the first 1/2 hour (1/2 mile) the owner parked the FJ40 and rode
shot gun in a Rover. Almost the same scenario at Rays Rocky Road #9 when aYJ
couldn't cut it. But enough bragging
The FJs and CJs rust to hell and neither one are build as strong as Land
Rovers. Rovers Rust where the aluminum and steal com in contact with each
other (series vehicles this is avoided by galvanization of the steel parts I
wish they still used this on current Rovers)
If I was on a low budget and wanted a Ideal Rover I'd get a series vehicle
and switch it over to coil sprung and have the best of both worlds (just
don't expect a luxury cruiser when making it)
to get chauvinistic just for a moment ...I wouldn't sell or trade my D90 for
any other vehicle anywhere for anything.
Chris "V"(Ps series vehicles are basic and simple to work on.)

Dixon,

JB WELD worked for me!

I killed a rear diff a few months ago. Turned out, all that oil on my rear
window during my trip to Black Rock last year WASN'T coming from my overdrive
afterall!

Sheared 5 crownwheel bolts, took two teeth off a spider gear, twisted the
inner end of the long axle, and punched two holes in the casing: hammer, JB
Weld, new bolts, good/used spiders, and a new axle, and she's good as new.

Now - if only I could get that damnded pinion bolt out, to change the bad seal
(my impact gun wouldn't do it)...

Nate,

There's plenty of things that would make an acceptable adhesive here. RTV,
Form-A-Gasket blue goo, or any type of urethane compound.

For me, though, I think I'd hunt down a tube of Form-A-Gasket #1 - the
stuff that dries hard like gasket shellac. That would hold it in place
nicely (as that's what it's designed for...).

An Aussie, Simon Barclay <sbarcla@ibm.net> is seeking assistance in finding
the proper paint codes for the Series I Deep Bronze Green.

I think I'd previously given him the American paint codes for Series II,
which, evidently, is a lighter shade of Bronze Green.

If anyone could assist Simon with these paint codes, it would be
appreciated. I don't think he is on the list, so please CC him on any
mail sent to the list.

Could I possibly trouble you again for the Deep Bronze Green code if you
still have this. My rebuild project has been on hold now as I have been
unable to find this despite a number of calls to the UK and quite a few

Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Actually I'd say the fit of the codes you gave is probably perfect.

I used the commonly quoted codes to get some Bronze Green for a '51 S1
I'm working on. I've disassembled some of the panels to reveal unweathered
original
paint and it's a dead match.

Interestingly the brownish hue that so many people associate with the Bronze
Green
is not readily apparent in the fresh paint. It only shows up after years of
aging on the
vehicle. I can say this with some certainty having pulled of components and
panels that
had the weathered "brown" hue on one part and a fresh deep green on the
unweatherd part.

Anyway.. the bottom line is the paint was a perfect match to my eye.

BTW it was DuPont Centari.
