Even with this mail traffic reducing measure, get on good terms with your

I have a backlog of mail digests for the lro and uk-lro to get through that is

Thankfully I _am_ the postmaster ;-)

Hello everyone,

I'm brand spanking new to the world of 4x4 and Land Rover. Just bought a
new Discovery 3 weeks ago and have enjoy it every since. Came upon this
list by accident but am glad that I did.

It seems most people that get on this list regularly own older LRs. In
fact, there's rarely any mention of the Discovery. I understand that most
of the vehicle related post were mechanically oriented. And the Discovery
must be quite a nightmare compared to the older and simpler machines of
yesteryears. The other posts are quite interesting though, like
"potentially lethal event".

BTW, anyone in the Southern California area? I'm interested in joining a
local LR club.
If so, please email me privately with the info.

Looking forward to learning all about 4x4 and off-roading from all you
veterans.

Joe S.

There's a good reason you don't see much on the Disco here - there's a
separate list for the folks with newer Rovers.

Try rro@land-rover.team.net - they're the folks with the newer machines.
You're welcome here too, but don't expect much mention of CD players,
sunroofs or air conditioners...<grin>

Subject: G-P Trails/map

Hi all G-P Attendees,
I would like to mention about the trail system in NYS. Most of the state
forest land is marked with boundary signs (which you no doubt saw). Motorised
access is permitted (not prosecuted at least) on existing trails. This allows
hunters, etc access. The state DER does not want to give out permits for use
because of the liability thing ( "I flipped my Rover in your woods" sort of a
thing) nor could we exactly publish a map with all known trails, so we did
the next best thing- we gave out a map ( some of you didn't pick it up at the
FLLRC tent or the main tent apparently) which we had plotted via GPS, and
notes were added in.
In terms of difficulty, no attempt was made to point you in the direction
where you would damage your truck/self. If you wanted to get stuck, all you
had to do was stray off the power line and I see no one tried so most of you
weren't that interested in using tow straps. There was plenty of standing
water/mud when we went by on Sat afternoon.
As far as maps at other events, I can't recall ever getting one or it being
offered. if you went off-road during the Mid_Atlantic it was on your own, as
the fun was intentionally confined to the event area (correct me Sandy) I
haven't been to the event at Tellico or a Solihull Society event, but I don't
think they do maps either. You just go along with a group. Part of the fun
in my opinion is meeting new people and sharing the activity together.
Dave Johnson, Team FLLRC and myself together put in six trips to the "Peak"
just to sort out the trails and decide where they go or don't go. Many hours
are spent driving around and turning around because you hit deadends. We even
"opened" some so they could connect.
If you couldn't find where to go, perhaps next year we can do better with
everyone's help.
My thanks to the organizers of ANARC for pulling of a major undertaking and
allowing me to participate. It was a learning curve for me and I will attempt
to carry this back to our various clubs' events in the future.

Hi

Can anyone shed some light on a recent problem.

Due to my LR soon becoming a commuting vehicle, can you tell me how easy is
it to fit a 2.5 TD from a defender into a Series 3 LR Lightweight? At the
moment it has a 2.25 4cyl petrol.

Also. What does TDi Stand for?
Turbo Diesel Intercooled
Turbo Diesel Injection
?

And. What sort of prices can i expect from a new unit, where from and what
modifications need to be made. What is the MPG of these units?

OK. Thats it. Hope you can help

Hello there,

Just thinking that if Greek Peak becomes an annual event, it would be
helpful to have real accurate up-to-date maps. They would be useable year in
year out, too. Why not break into groups and map the trails as part of the
activities? Sure would get those adventurous types to do something useful
with their energy. After next year, it would be just updating them for the
less adventurous types.

>that a Land Rover can take before dying under it's own weight. How many years

BGB always gets where its going... eventually...

Rear diff was rotten from the word go. Kept slowly losing oil. About four
years ago it started to make a real mess on the back window so I opened up the
plug. Got about six bolts out of the diff and then noticed that they had all
been trying to escape out the back cover. (Makes an interesting jump when
they catch on the crown wheel). So, mallet in hand I pounded the wee holes
closed, filled it up with oil and promised never, ever to open it up again.
It lasted until earlier this summer when it came to a big grinding shop when
the bearings overheated and seized. It looked like a geode on the inside.
Piles of sparkly bits from disintegrating bearings etc. Every bolt on the crown
wheel was broken.

JB Weld (a fave up here) on the casing to hold new oil in, another used diff
and it was back on the road. Dale coated the inside of the pumkin with clear
plastic to preserve the image (doesn't sparkle as nice with plasti-coat as
hypoid)
and stole a bunch of the parts for his rear diff in the mighty Range Rover.
Rest of the bits I am going to keep as spares...

:-)

Oh, two gallons of oil each way to Cortland from Ottawa (oh, 250 miles?)
Know I ran it dry a couple of times. Maybe I'll add some grease etc to the
next oil replenishment.

I saw an original plate(the engine-to-bellhousing) that was drilled out to
bolt to a Ford V-6. Steve Johnson of Dixieland Rovers has it. He says that
it is "easy" to do. Of course, that's coming from a guy who bolted two series
trannys together to create a 300:1 final ratio for his 88" rock crawler.

Hi all,
I must really be behind. I just looked up the LRX and it seems to be frozen
in April? Did it move or cease?

Another place with Rovers for sale is: http://www.roverlandusa.com
They seem to have quite a few for sale. I can't say anything for their
reputation as I have never delt with them.

My mistake. The address is:
http://www.roverland.com although roverlandusa.com does have a few for
sale in their classifieds.

My reason for looking at the XZL`s is for my 101, hence the 900 x 16. These
tires
have an outside dia. of 36.8" compared to the bar grips at ~34" Finding new
shoes
for the 101 does not provide too many choices. National have one at 305/85 but
they are a relatively soft tire and wear more rapidly than a Michelin.Does
anybody
have any experience with the Petlas.that Mr. Craddock advertises? George Bull
has
1100 x 16 XCL`s on his but they are as rare as rocking horse droppings. The
Continentals also wear rapidly The search continues.

Some LR 90 and 110 wheel rims are tubed tyres but most I have seen have the
ridge in them for the bead. So it is worth checking. I AM SURE THAT SOME
KIND PERSON WILL HAVE THE RIM NUMBERS OF THE RIMS THAT WILL TAKE TUBE LESS
TYRES. Oh pooh hit the shift lock. Also some times you can feel a slight
ripple on the outside of a tube less rim.

Have a very nice day.

Richard
