We've seen the result of a NATO hitch ripped off a motor.... it went through a

A new job (and the need for expansive freeway travel) forces me to give
up the idea of my Land Rover as a daily driver.

It's a 1965 Series IIA 88" Station Wagon 2.25 petrol with stainless
exhaust, header, and Webber carb, Safari Top and Alpine Glass with
sliding rear windows. The spare is bonnet and rear door mounted. I've
been driving it daily on a short commute in the SF Bay Area and despite
the usual LR idiosyncrasies, the vehicle is completely functional
(windshield wiper motors and all). The Rover also comes with a few new
spare parts-- factory fuel gage, new distributor/cap.

I'm also looking for reliable transportation-- so a trade for a domestic
truck/suv is very possible. If you're interested e-mail me directly at:
clark_pd@pillsburylaw.com

If you're looking to buy-- something in the $3K range.

Hi everybody,
my name is Antonio and I'm currently living in Houston.
I moved here with my wife, from Milan, Italy five years ago.
I drive a NAS 97 five speed Discovery with 2" suspension lift, Cooper
Mud terrain tires, rock sliders and shopping for a bull bar and winch.
A good spot for off-roading near Houston is Fort Hood Military base.
We also take long trips mostly in the west part of the US, New Mexico,
Colorado and Big Bend, TX.
We are planning with two Defender 90 a trip to Baja California next
March.

I look forward to be on this list, thanks.

Subject: Rear X member repairs & The Big Re-Spray

Well, the new rear cross member is on finally! Spent last weekend sand
blasting and painting the rest of the rear chassis. A few new pictures
of the new x member are on my web page at:
http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Garage/4954/ go to the picture
gallery.

Now the Rover is back home and I have the rest of this week off from
work! Over the next few days, I'm planning to rent (hire) a compressor
and do a home respray in resplended Limestone. I've printed off Dave
Walkers guide to painting Land Rovers
http://www.roverlanders.bc.ca/bclandrover/FAQ/LRpaintMain.html so now
it's down to the autobody supply shop for a few tins of Limestone in
urethane enamel & a good etching primer & lots of sand paper.

So, If anyone happens to be in the Victoria BC Canada area over the next
few days... and is willing to work for Guinness, give me a shout! I'll
supply the sand paper and suds. I can even supply couch space, or free
moorage (wink wink Dave) for a few days :-)

Hopefully, I'll have more pictures on the web page (good
before-and-after prospects here) next week.

Subject: Batteries

So the "It works, but not well" battery that came in DaTruck
died over the two weeks I was out of town and I'm looking at
replacing it. The charging system appears (and I stress
appears) to work fine. Assuming that none of my dealers has a
cross for a 1972 Ex-MOD SIII 109" Land Rover, what size
battery would I need/want? (since I didn't feel like yanking
it out and trying to schlep it in the TR-4 this morning for
comparison purposes, and since it is smaller than the
available space by far anyway.) At least it's not positive
ground. You should have seen the guys at the local battery
place scratching their head when they offered to check my
alternator and I said "generator" and then said "do you know
how to set up your tester for positive ground?".

Assuming you have the battery under the bonnet, about the biggest battery
that will physically fit is a group 65. I am not sure where you are, but
if it gets cold there buy the battery with the most cold cranking
amperage, and reserve capacity you can find.

It was at least two, and the only reason he didn't just drive around in front

I do, in fact, have the battery under the bonnet. I live
in Milwaukee, where it's been known to get a wee bit cold.
I'm from upstate NY originally, so I know from cold-cranking.
Group 65 is what I needed to hear. Thanks for the info.

Subject: clicking and knocking

about a month ago, i changed the transmission in my early IIA for one
that came from a late IIA. at first it quieted everything down so much
that i thought it was succesful. however, the more that i drove it, the
more i noticed new noises. these noises could very well have been there
before and were masked by the very loud previous transfer case.
there is a knocking from between 2500 and 3000 rpms. it is louder
under load and is not present above or below these rpms. i've already
replaced the crankshaft bearings. what are the possibilities? before i
tear into this again, i want to know what to be looking for!
the newest problem, after the 1000 mile round trip to greek peak,
is a loud clicking when the truck is rolling at about 10 mph in neutral.
once again, it is not present above or below certain speeds.
and last but not least, there is often a loud clunk when i push in
and let out the clutch. and gear selection from a stop is getting more and
more difficult.

can any of these things be related? all gearbox oils are topped
up. could it be a loose flywheel?

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, you Australian Shepherd owners have me intrigued. Then my wife said
she saw some "Australian Shepherds" on an American TV programme. She didn't
recognise them so I looked then up on the internet. She noticed that they
had thier tails docked too.

I'd have to say I've never seen an "Australian Shepherd" before. They
certainly aren't kelpies. The pix I saw on the net showed them working
cattle, not sheep.

Are they an American breed?

I doubt it's a loose flywheel, but it could be a thrust bearing going bad.
If the crank is moving all over the place, you would get all kinds of funny
noises (increasing under load, too.) If it places a load on the input shaft,
it could show up as tranny trouble.
I'm probably way off, but if this is what's wrong, look at the bright side.
The engine is much easier to pull than the tranny...

Also, has anyone ever joined this club? Bren Workman and I have been
pestering various members of it for MONTHS and we still can't get anyone to
tell us where to send our $$. It's not like we're asking someone to drive

I guess we'll just join at the rally. Provided we don't have too much

Subject: Man, do I need a piece of glass

Whilst replacing my window channels last evening, I became frustrated by the
rust which was hampering my forward progress and delaying my nightly
couch-sitting-before-TV-mit-bier.

Frustration being the (illegitimate) mother of invention, I reached for Mr.
Air Chisel to remove the confounded screws, rust, et al.

Worked great. Almost done in about 30 minutes. Then, daydreaming about the
self-congratulatory message I would post detailing my new procedure for
window channel replacement ("The Jackson Method", I would immodestly have
called it), I let slip the aforementioned Air Chisel and did destroy, blow
up, and obliterate the sliding glass on the drivers door. Ouch.

If anyone happens to be sitting on one of these pieces of glass (not
literally, of course, or if you are, please wipe it off) , and should this
glass be excess to your needs, I would be pleased to pay a reasonable sum
for it. Winter is coming, you know.

Ron,

Well, if it helps I han an Autrailian Sheperd for about 12 years.

Yes, thay are an American breed, and they have a natrually short tail, about
2-3 inches. They were bred from Border Collies.

Measure the opposite window. Any decent autoglass place should be able
to cut a custom piece of glass for a few tens of dollars.

I've had nothing but bad experiences with the Michelin company and their lousy
excuse for a "warranty." I vow never to buy from them again. It's a shame,
really, because when I buy a LR with Michelins on already, I obviously use
them as they are a "bird in the hand." They are really nice, as are tires from
their sister company BFG, from whom I will also withold my business (guilt by
association).
There are plenty of other tires out there. Armstrong, a Pirelli branch, makes
amazing tires that spank BFG in my opinion. They cost less, are quieter, and
look great on a LR. I prefer 235/75/r16s for that tall 7.50 look.
