They said they could have it recored with exactly the same core, same dimensions, 5 tube and repainted for $300.00 USD .... It boils down (don't shoot me - please) to two concerns: whether too much cooling capacity will be lost due to plugging tubes to fix it; and, whether there will not be enough life left in the old radiator to justify the cost of removal, fix, and reinstallation. The latter I do not have experience with, and it may depend on the given situation (driven near the ocean? salted roads in the winter?). If you don't know the shop well and think you might be willing to just patch leaks, then I would suggest going to the shop and talking face-to-face with the person that found the leaks. I did this after hearing *very* similar options, and ended up with only one tube plugged (negligible cooling capacity loss) and several smaller leaks soldered (mine wasn't "totally shot full of holes") ... and then it passed their 20 psi air test under water. The cooling system typically sees about half of that. Final bill: $65. Of course, I didn't get their 90 day warrantee, but I don't think that will be an issue in the final analysis. Just some thoughts ... not an opinion that all should go this route in all cases. From: "Adams, Bill" <badams@usia.gov> Date: Mon, 3 Aug 1998 12:47:58 -0400 Subject: Major complaints about GP event Complaint #1 No water provided to the campers. We were definitely treated as second-class citizens...a tanker or water bufffalo would have been a great convenience as opposed to schlepping a quarter-mile to the lodge every time. Complaint #2 Lack of trail etiquette resulting in serious damage to (at least) one truck. Seeing how a disparate group gets together for off-roading and the way that the lack of consideration for those behind can lead to trouble kind of set me off. Perhaps there should have been a short briefing before setting out so as to avoid this unnecessary damage and remind everyone of proper trail proceedure. Complaint #3 No one brought anything to sell. I was hoping for a swap meet, but there was none, or very little of that. Vendors targeted coilers. Complaint #4 Pervading feeling of utter silliness surrounding the whole thing. Lanham officialy said about 262 LRs showed up.. Dixon counted the rovers listsed on the release wavers signed the day(s) of the event and got 328. And I know at least 20 more that didn't register. I was VERY impressed (that >nothing broke, that is!) Hi John - Was that the Saturday night run? Or the Saturday afternoon 'mudpuddle-6ft-berm-thing'? I can't remember - it was too much fun the whole weekend! Since I'm running light truck/road tires, my stratagy was to keep the momentum up - else if I slow down to a stop in mud - there is no getting going again. Yep - I didn't break anything - but I think I've got an exaust leak somewhere now. I did have one real scare! Apparently my starter motor jammed into the flywheel and stopped my engine from turning - I thought the engine was jammed in a big way! After bouncing back out off the trail it must have come loose. (Were you the one from the Albany area in the 88 wagon, or the guys w/o the top on Saturday - sorry I can't remember...) WRT the event in general, I felt it was a little disorganised - maybe I didn't keep my eyes and ears open enough though. Like you said John, A yearly thing would be good. I recently (april) bought a NEW zenith carb to replace my weber (Turner Engineering recommended it for use with the unleaded head I had from them). Yesterday, I took Evie for an MOT re-test (she failed on some chassis holes and the emissions). The bloke shoved his probe up her tail pipe ;-) and the machine went off the scale, so we stated tweaking the mixture screw (or Volume Control screw as the manual calls it). It made no difference whatsoever!! - even screwing it right in, she continued to tick over nicely. Now, I've checked that the choke mechanism is functioning properly, the float level is spot on, the needle valve is fine and all the screws/nuts/bolts are tight. When I swapped my weber back and we re-did the test she passed no problems (after a little tweaking). Sooooo, is there something I'm missing about the Zenith carb, or is it naffed and should go back to the shop for a replacement???
