Make a gasket. It exceptionally easy to make even complicated gaskets. All
you need is gasket paper (from auto parts store) and a small ball pein
hammer. Lay the gasket paper over the hole where pump was. Tap gently
around the edge with the ball of the ball pein and it will cut a perfect
outline. Sme for the bolt holes. Dead simple.

It looks like it's another thing to do and photograph for my web site.

You should always have a stock of gasket paper on hand.

It boils down (don't shoot me - please) to two concerns: whether too much
cooling capacity will be lost due to plugging tubes to fix it; and, whether
there will not be enough life left in the old radiator to justify the cost of
removal, fix, and
reinstallation. The latter I do not have experience with, and it may depend on
the given situation (driven near the ocean? salted roads in the winter?).

If you don't know the shop well and think you might be willing to just patch
leaks, then I would suggest going to the shop and talking face-to-face with the
person that found the leaks. I did this after hearing *very* similar options,
and ended up
with only one tube plugged (negligible cooling capacity loss) and several
smaller leaks soldered (mine wasn't "totally shot full of holes") ... and then
it passed their 20 psi air test under water. The cooling system typically sees
about half of
that. Final bill: $65. Of course, I didn't get their 90 day warrantee, but
I don't think that will be an issue in the final analysis.

Just some thoughts ... not an opinion that all should go this route in all
cases.

Which is, of course, dead wrong and right. Since the crank rotates
twice for each rotation of the distributor, you can time a four
cylinder using either 1 or 4...

Methinks I'll use #4 from now on, just 'cause I hate following

That one is a really good solution. I learned it when putting together a
Subaru engine and a friend mechanic told me "why are you gonna loose your
time looking around for gaskets? Grab this hammer and this paper and make it
for yourself!!". It is perfect for pumps gaskets.
Gasket paper is a must.

Subject: Major complaints about GP event

Complaint #1
No water provided to the campers. We were definitely treated as
second-class citizens...a tanker or water bufffalo would have been a
great convenience as opposed to schlepping a quarter-mile to the lodge
every time.
Complaint #2
Lack of trail etiquette resulting in serious damage to (at least) one
truck. Seeing how a disparate group gets together for off-roading and the
way that the lack of consideration for those behind can lead to trouble
kind of set me off. Perhaps there should have been a short briefing
before setting out so as to avoid this unnecessary damage and remind
everyone of proper trail proceedure.
Complaint #3
No one brought anything to sell. I was hoping for a swap meet, but there
was none, or very little of that. Vendors targeted coilers.
Complaint #4
Pervading feeling of utter silliness surrounding the whole thing.

1.Good turnout of attendees, seemed about equal to Lanham though.
2.Great location for offroading, good trails and great scenery.
3.Plenty of things to do, both organized and ad hoc.
4.Well organized and directed schedule.

Overall a good experience, but an awful long drive in a Series
Diesel...ears still ringing and butt still sore. Sorry I had to leave
early.

A final count will be release on the list and web site when we get
it tallies. The problem with a count was that a lot of people were on
the trail or at hotels, etc a lot of the time. Lanham officialy said about
262 LRs showed up.. Dixon counted the rovers listsed on the release wavers
signed the day(s) of the event and got 328. And I know at least 20 more that
didn't register. So, I'd expect the offical number to be around 350; almost
100 more than Lanham.

I was one of the last to leave. The parking lot was covered with
oil drips. And there was definte oil trail for a few miles away from Greek
Peak.

My only complaint about the weekend is that I didn't have my camara out
when Peter "I dont need no stinkin' winch" Kaskan bounced 3 feet into the air
after clearing a drainage ditch at about mach-2. I was VERY impressed (that
nothing broke, that is!)
It was a great weekend, and I think the organizers did a great job. Yes,
there were some things that probably could have been improved, but those guys
are not event promoters, they are Rover owners.
I'd like to make a motion that Greek Peak become an annual event.

I have one complaint about all British Car events I've been to. Why can't
the caterers and /or food vendors serve British food at these events. It's
not that hard to do because it's done at ALL Scottish events. I'd love to
see Bangers & Mash, Pork Pies, Briddles, Cornish Pasties, Shephards Pie,
Fish & Chips, Steak & Kidney pie, etc. at these events. The British style
ales and lagers would complement these food items beautifully.

Hi John - Was that the Saturday night run?

Or the Saturday afternoon 'mudpuddle-6ft-berm-thing'?

I can't remember - it was too much fun the whole weekend!

Since I'm running light truck/road tires, my stratagy was to keep the
momentum up - else if I slow down to a stop in mud - there is no getting
going again.

Yep - I didn't break anything - but I think I've got an exaust leak
somewhere now.

I did have one real scare! Apparently my starter motor jammed into the
flywheel and stopped my engine from turning - I thought the engine was
jammed in a big way! After bouncing back out off the trail it must have
come loose.

(Were you the one from the Albany area in the 88 wagon, or the guys w/o the
top on Saturday - sorry I can't remember...)

WRT the event in general, I felt it was a little disorganised - maybe I
didn't keep my eyes and ears open enough though.

Like you said John, A yearly thing would be good.

Let me know if you want to come up this way again.

Cheers

Hi ALL.
About GP.

Glad to have had the opportunity to have put the face to the names.
Great fun for the whole fam damily. Kids mixed well ( at least no blood).

As for changes I would echo some of the concerns already posted. Namely
camp-area courtesy, the dust was horrible when pinheads drive down a dirt
road at 30mph right next to your camp.

I would recommend a public forum on friday night, a sort of open events
ceremony to lay out the agenda. There was a closing ceremony

And like others have mentioned, a water buffalo would have been nice. ( I
was the on with the PVC solar heated shower unit prototype #1 on the back
of the wifes Disco so hot showers were available in places).

I figure if that's all I have to bitch about, life's pretty grand:)

SIDE NOTE.
A friend of mine brought some parts to sell/trade and was swamped by
thirsty series owners for his cache of NOS parts (HINT) bring'um if ya
got'um...

Subject: Zenith Woes....

Hi all.......

I recently (april) bought a NEW zenith carb to replace my weber (Turner
Engineering recommended it for use with the unleaded head I had from them).

Yesterday, I took Evie for an MOT re-test (she failed on some chassis holes
and the emissions). The bloke shoved his probe up her tail pipe ;-) and the
machine went off the scale, so we stated tweaking the mixture screw (or
Volume Control screw as the manual calls it). It made no difference
whatsoever!! - even screwing it right in, she continued to tick over nicely.

Now, I've checked that the choke mechanism is functioning properly, the
float level is spot on, the needle valve is fine and all the
screws/nuts/bolts are tight.

When I swapped my weber back and we re-did the test she passed no problems
(after a little tweaking).

Sooooo, is there something I'm missing about the Zenith carb, or is it
naffed and should go back to the shop for a replacement???

Cheers in advance...
