Subject: Changeing wiring harness.

I have a dilemma. The previous owner of my 1959 109 PU rewired
but used the old wiring harness and just tied in wires to the harness.
Thwiring compartment behind the dash panel is just a mess with many cut
off wires and various connectors and such. It has many unused wires and
odds and ends. However the bottom line was it worked. I had no real
prblems over 7 years of driving. (occ burnt wire due to short but I
fixed with more wires and connectors.)'

Now I have a problem. this winter I developed "lucasitis" with
a whole host of wierd symptoms.

	* fuel guages reads empty when full, full when 7/8 full and 2/3
full when empty

*Ampmeter reads chargeing 10 Amps when off
*High and low beams not right
	* no turn signals or brake lights
	* I am sure there are more signs and symptoms but I can't
remember them.

I am off to do major dianostic testing equiped with multimeter,
continuity tester and wiring diagrams. GOing to check all the grounds
and ground again just for the heck of it...

My question is... since I am going to be doing all this
rewireing stuff anyway, should I consider getting a new wiring harness
and redoing it right for scratch? How feasible is it to rewire a new
harness in a rovewr that is not apart? Can it be done relatively easily
in a day or so? Or should I just continue to patch wires here and there
and leave the big dreadlock of lucas hair behind the dash?

	Thanks
	cwolfe

PS I asm going to be putting in new guages too.

Hi there,
I'm going to buy my second Landie.

Just a question, as I have a serie III what are the differences about going
from 3rd gear to second...

Forget downshifting to 2 with a diesel. Too much trouble to
double-clutch, and the engine will do fine in 3 anyway. Second is mostly
for getting to third (on road) and good for off-roading. Don't use it
much on the roadway.

Must be something in the air!

Not 24 hours after your Purple Peril hit the road, my '61 Beast also
ambled out of the drive under it's own power for the fist time in over
five years. Once around the block was enough to tell me that yes, the
brakes need more work! (5 - 10 pumps to get any pressure) Working turn
signals and brake lights, not to mention some floor boards would also be
nice. But at least it moves, shifts, steers and rattles better than it
has in many years! Also managed to get ICBC (insurance company) to
register it as a Land Rover 2A (sic) rather than a 'Rover Rover Stnwgn'
as it used to be.

As you already know, the series III transmission has syncro in all four
forward gears.

The series II transmission does not have syncro in first or second gears.
It has syncros in third and fourth gears.

This means:

first to second - double clutch
second to third - single depression of the clutch pedal
third to fourth - single depression of the clutch pedal

fourth to third - single depression of the clutch pedal
third to second - double clutch
second to first - double clutch

To double clutch when going from a lower ratio gear to a higher ratio
gear:

Press down on the clutch pedal while taking the other foot off the
accelerator pedal.
move the gear box into neutral
release the clutch pedal
press the clutch pedal down a second time.
move the lever into the next highest gear and release the clutch pedal.
resume pressure on the accelerator pedal.

To double clutch when going from a higher ratio gear to a lower ratio
gear:

Press down on the clutch pedal while taking the other foot off the
accelerator pedal.
move the gear box into neutral
release the clutch pedal
rev the engine briefly
press the clutch pedal down a second time.
move the lever into the next lower gear and release the clutch pedal.
resume pressure on the accelerator pedal.

Hope this helps

Not everything goes into the ammo box.

I lost all my tools when the passenger door flew open crossing the
Columbia river last September and have had to replace them. I purchased
a socket set with a neat holder and a combination wrench set with a nifty
holder and decided to keep them organized in their holders. These do not
fit into the ammo box.

Here is my current behind the seat packing scheme. First I have a 109
two door. This means a cross bulkhead to lean things against and more
space between the seat back and the bulkhead than an 88 has.

Behind the left (drivers seat):
- 5 foot length of hardened chain with hooks
- 20 foot recovery strap with fittings
- pair of gloves
- folded 5 X 7 foot plastic tarp
- holder with combination wrench set in centre fold of tarp

Behind centre cubby box:
- Large rechargeable fire extinguisher mounted to back plate that h^As a
   little space behind it.
     Behind the back plate is:
      - folding course tooth saw
      - hammer
      - hatchet
      - supply of bailing wire

- between the fire extinguisher and left (drivers) seat is a liter of
drinking water sitting on a bunch of bags I use to collect trash

- Between the fire extinguisher and the passenger seat is a box of
tissues and a 12V work lamp.

In the crack between the cubby box and right set is an umbrella

Behind the right (passengers) seat
- I have most of my tools in the ammo box. I have built a 'L' shaped
bracket shaped so that the box sits on it and leans flat against the
rear slanted bulkhead. A horizontal ridge immediately above the ammo box
and the seat back keeps the box wedged firmly in place.

Under the 'L' bracket sits:
- torque wrench
- A really long screwdriver used mostly for prying
- 1, 1-1/16, 1-1/8 combination wrenches
- a spare fan belt
- hub socket

Sitting on top of the ammo box is the socket set organizer with a set
each of regular and long six point sockets.
Siting on top of the socket organizer is a little duffel bag that carries
a set of "work on car" clothes

Wedged between the ammo box and the side wall around the front filler
tube is a set of radiator hoses, one or two new fuel filters, shop rags,
and a car of WD40.

I'm suddenly beginning to realize why my car is so heavy.

The 8 quarts of engine oil sits in a special cabinet that is the
refrigerator stand

All the above stays in the car all the time. The rest of it is loaded
only when traveling. It is divided among the roof rack and other
crannies. Oh the work shop manuals usually stay on a shelf in one of the
wardrobes.

Oh, yes. All the other tools I didn't mention above goes into the ammo
box.

Subject: OVLR B-day "Quickie" pt. 1

Got back to Connecticut approximately 1:30am. Working in NYC today so sleep
was short. This is a quick, incomplete, account of the festivities at
Silver Lake this weekend...

As many of you know, my Rover is in the shop. Eric "AB ext. 231" Riston's
Rangie is also out of service as he's currently building the most tricked
out Rangie in North America. FYI:Rumors of that projects delay being my
fault are greatly exaggerated. Truth be told it's because he can't find a
transformer (to power the neon glow tubes attached to the frame) that's
off-road rated. Plus he's been "keeping company" as of late, and never
seems to be awake to work on the Rangie.

Anyhow, as we were both Roverless, Eric and I teamed up and rented a Disco
for the weekend. We took delivery with less than 1000 miles on the
odometer. Tres Chic.

Trip to Silver Lake was uneventful. Met up with Bill Caloccia at Chappy's
Diner (Exit 46, I-81) along the way. Bill decided we should get CA$ from
the ATM at the duty free. Unfortunately, it dispensed $US so we ended up
using the currency exchange anyway. Not too bad I think it was 1.47:1. No
excitement at the border for Eric and I--We sent "the fabulous furry freak
brother" through first. All the agent wanted to know from us was "are you
going to the same Land-Rover thing as *that* guy?" and "do you have any
pepper spray?"

Arrived at the Party site, picked up registration materials, went to the
OPP campground and checked in. (Jennifer behind the desk was a rightous
cutie and all on the staff there are as friendly and cheerful as can be.)
Set up our tents then headed for dinner. Drove about 10km to the wrong
restaurant thanks to Bill's input. Made it back to the correct
place--directly across the street from the Campground--just under the "stop
serving" deadline. Marveled at how cheap (and tasty) everything was--and
than marveled all the more when we remembered that we were paying in
Canadian dollars!

After dinner we gathered at Dixons campsite to drink, swap lies, drink,
fire the potato cannon, drink, repair the potato canon's firing mechanism
and drink. I met John Hong for the first time. He lives up to the advanced
billing--"great people!" Russ Dushin discovered that the quickest route
back to his camp site was over water, so he borrowed Zippy's canoe. Bobeck
fired a few spud rounds across his bows--"just so he knows who he's dealing
with."

Next morning it was breakfast, then off to the Party site. While the light
offroad was going on, Bill, Eric, Quinton, Mike Malone and myself set up
three sections of twelve gates each for the RTV trials course. Then "Q"
took us for a quick run through the light offroad in the 80. Twas very
light indeed this year. Very little mud, the water crossing was a splash
and the infamous license plate eating beaver dam was a mere bump in the
road. Still, it was fun to be "outback." Back to camp for a delicous lunch,
then it was time for the RTV Trial.

Everyone got a "0" (that's a perfect score) on the first section--basically
just a hill climb with a free turnaround (unlimited shunts) at the top and
a return down hill.. The second was a bit more challenging with some tight
turns and a couple of rock piles thrown in. Still, there were several
perfect scores there too--including Bill Rice driving his 109.

The last section was carved into a rocky hillside. At the end, four perfect
scores remained: Ted Rose (88), Quintin (80), Andrew Finlynson (sp?) (80)
and Ben "the Road is my Bride" Smith (88). The first tie breaker was to run
the course backwards (gate 12 became gate 1). Ted was eliminated in that
round. With three remaining, Quintin chimed "let's run it *in* reverse. So
the course was run in the correct direction with the vehicles in reverse.
Quintin was up first in the 80 sans top, door tops, hoops etc. He got to
the fourth gate before demolishing a cane. Andrew went next--he rolled his
side curtains up and ran a perfect score. Poor Ben was faced with a
dilemma--he was running a hard top. Bill allowed that he could run the
course in Q's 80 if he wanted to. Ben chose the devil he knew instead--but
asked to be allowed to remove the rear door. This was allowed and off he
went. Ben also managed a perfect score--though he did manage to hit a
branch (twig really) which bumped a gate. The marshall (me) ruled it a no
touch--but was it ever close. The other interesting part was when Ben
reached the downhill--in reverse--and all of the picks, shovels and
recovery stuff came tumbling out the rear doorway. He didn't stop for a
minute...

To be completed as schedule allows...

I think the answer to your question depends upon you, your car and your
skills.

If your car requires a modified electrical system (different/extra
gauges, alternator with built in regulator, extra lights, winch wiring,
etc) a new wiring harness would end up with a lot of spliced and extra
wires. If your car is electrically stock or near so, a premade wiring
harness is a fast easy way to redo the car.

If you are comfortable around wiring, have patience and want to do it
right, you are a good candidate for scratch making a harness.

If you don't know much about them there wires inside, have little
patience or are the type that will wire everything with blue insulated
wire because you have a big roll of it sitting in the garage, you should
pay someone else to do it, or live with what you have.

If you want to do partial rewiring or make a scratch harness to fit a
modified electrical system I strongly suggest that you stay with the
Lucas wiring colour codes, use the standard Lucas solder on bullet
connectors, use new uncorroded barrel and ground connectors and DOCUMENT
YOUR WIRING DIAGRAM VERY CAREFULLY. This will come in important when you
need to do maintenance or if you sell the car.

I have a page in my web site providing the Lucas wire colour coding
system.

You didn't say what country that you are in. If you are in the US,
British Pacific carries the striped wiring, solder on connectors, barrel
connectors and ground connectors.

If you have an alternator with a built in regulator and make a custom
harness bypassing the old regulator you can move the coil to where the
regulator sits. This allows you to use the cheaper series III spark plug
wire set. The only difference between the expensive series II and the
cheaper series III sets is the length of the wire between coil and centre
of the distributor cap.

If you are swapping fuel gauges be aware that the positive and negative
earth gauges and senders are compatible. The early sender (has a metal
tower) only works with the early LR fuel gauge. The later sender (has a
flat top) works with the later LR and other Smiths fuel gauges. I use
MGB fuel gauges with the late style tank units.

The later electrical gauges require the Lucas voltage stabilizer to
function properly.

If you want to add a tach, The MGB tach fits into one of the two large
holes in your instrument panel. 1968 and later tachs are wired for neg
earth. 1967 and earlier gauges are wired for positive earth.

I have a number of articles in my web site that could be of use to you if
you decide to make up your own harness. Please feel free to visit and
look around.

I hope this gives you something to go with.

Take care

Subject: Silver Lake party - v.good!

The Ottawa Valley Land Rover (OVLR) birthday party this weekend was my
first LR event, and it was good family fun! I didn't have a Land Rover
there, so I hitched a ride to the Trials with Russel from New York. The
trials were very good, and gave us all (especially the new drivers!!) a
good appreciation of how well a LR will climb, descend and turn.

Beautiful location, about an hour from Kingston, Ontario.

My thanks to the organizers!

Subject: OVLR B-day "Quickie" pt. 2

When we left our story Ben Smith was completing the RTV Trials course, in
reverse, with Dora's rear door removed...

[W]hen Ben reached the downhill--in reverse--and all of the picks, shovels
and recovery stuff came tumbling out the rear doorway. He didn't stop for a
minute, (or even for a second) but just pressed on, tyres and equipment be
damned, to the finish line. Bill decided on the spot that two perfect
scores was just fine, especially since they were in seperate classes, and
so ended OVLR's first RTV. (Not to pat myself on the back, but the guys
from EROS deserve some praise for setting the course and marshalling.)

After that it was back to the trailer for more chat. We didn't stay too
long though, we were pretty drained after standing about in the sun all
afternoon so we headed back to the campground for showers, swims and (oh
the shame of it) power naps. Thus refreshed, it was back to the trailer for
a delicious supper prepared by Dave Meadows and Eric Zipkin.

[Content Removed at the Request of the Author]

As darkness approached and the bugs got bad we headed back to Dixon's
campsite for another evening of revelry--which was uncharacteristicly
subdued by OVLR/NetSlum/EROS standards--Is it possible that we're getting
old?

The next morning we struck camp, dined across the street and headed to the
trailer again to stake out front row seats. Bill presented the awards for
the RTV and then it was time for Al Pilgrim to take center stage as
auctioneer. There were less bits and more chachkis this year--and the
bidding on some of the items was furious.
[Content Removed at the Request of the Author]
 In the end,
a decent quantity of money was raised to cover some recent trailer expenses
(it's sporting a new hitch amongst other things). Thanks to those who
donated goods and those who bought stuff--often at prices that exceeded
retail.

After that Eric, Bill and I bid farewell to everyone and hit the road. From
there we hit Tim Horton's (tin of coffee for an expat friend), Canadian
Tire (Riston had never been and Bill and I wanted to by gadgets that we
never seem to find in the States). The border was even easier this time--
"Citizenship?" [US] "Any merchendise?" [A couple of T-shirts] "Okay."

Next stop the first rest area after the bridge. Bill makes the mistake of
adding oil while the engine was running. Nice James Bond smoke screen
entails. Just about dissapates by the time we reach Chappy's for a late
lunch. After lunch and ice cream I was forced to abandon the comforts (A/C
and Jimmy Buffett tapes) of the Disco so that I could keep Bill company.
(Music was just as good, some would even say better, but the seats are
worse than those in FINSUP, never mind the "Barca-Disco.") We meandered
home, stopping frequently to fill Bill's motor with oil and occassionly to
check the gas. A quick photo op for "Team Rental Rover: The best damn rally
car in the world belongs to someone else!" took place roadside just befor
sunset. Finally we split off. Eric and I arrived back at his place and
with the help of Eric's charming and delightful sister Heather and his
trusty regular sidekick "Silent Bob" we soon had the Disco unpacked and my
gear was stowed in my rice rocket. Foot to the floor I took off along the
Taconic, dodging deer...hallucinated giant armidillos (the damn things go
*crunch* as opposed the *splat* that I get from the giant cats that usually
appear in front of the car when I'm too tired)...and sleep. Home at 1:30,
in bed by 2, up and on my way here at 6am.

It was worth it. RoverOn!

Subject: Emergency Flasher Wiring

My emergency flashers have been on the blink for a while and I'd like to get
them working again (necessary for long road trips on interstate highways...like
the trip to Geezer Peak). Anway, yesterday I replaced the flasher unit and that
didn't work. The six wires into the back of the switch are scarey and I don't
have a wiring diagram in my original manuals or the factory service manual that
show the emergency flasher. Can anyone help? This is a 1969 IIa SW 88" with a
single flasher switch on the dash and a big red light next to it.

Hello,
Is there any Landrover (or just off road) fiends out there in the U.S that
would like to offer some info to a visiting RangeRover driving, Green Lane
Assc. member?

Iam visiting San Diego in a few weeks, then driving out to Las Vegas via
Palm Springs and the Joshua Tree Monument park. I have a Chevy Blazer
rental at my disposal and would like to get some trail driving in. Nothing
too serious, after all it is a rental!

Anybody got any ideas, advice?

E-mail me on the above .
Thanks for reading this .

Dave,

When you're in the Joshua Tree area, there's a road that exits off Interstate
10, between Indio, and Desert Center, called Red Cloud Road. It's a dirt trail
that goes off into the desert, that has a few steep ups/downs in it. Don't go
off the road, or other marked trails, because it's Federal land, and getting
caught off road = $150.00 fine!

I just found this out last week, after going target shooting there (and
driving off the road) for the last 10 years! You can camp, shoot, whatever,
but keep all vehicles on the road (this includes bicycles!)

There's lots of dirt trails out there, so take LOTS of drinking stuff, and
food, and make sure that you have a full tank. And...it gets very hot out
there...this time of year, upto 125F.

Subject: diff pin

The pin that has fallen out of your diff sounds like the planet gear shaft
pin. These are used to locate the shaft and to prevent it turning. prolonged
use without the pin can resulkt in several possible problems, the shaft can
rotate, thus enlarging the locating hole and permitting more backlash, with
consequent stress increases. The pin can breal easily since it is
unsupported at one end. Bits can lodge in the gear teeth and wreck the diff.
Replacement of the pin requires removal of the diff, perjhaps 30 minutes,
then dismantling of the diff if the pin is damaged or the holes worn. If
all is well the pin can be replaced without stripping the diff.

Subject: Cant get back to 2 wd

One of the problems with series trannies that are not often used in 4 wd is
that the mechanism siezes up. To return to 2 wd from 4 wd requires the
movement of a shaft by a spring. If the shaft is dirty or tight it will not
move easily.
The repair involves reomong the floor at the right hand side, this exposes
the front of the transfer box. At the front end yo will see a cover over two
shaft extensions. It is necessary to remove the cover, which involves
removing the yellow knob pivot arm and the hi low lever. The ex[posed shafts
can cleaned with wet or dry paper and then be treated with WD40 or similar
and moved in and out until they move easily. Some heavier oil or moly grease
and rebuild.

Had exactly the same problem and followed the advice from the Digest.
Clean all the crud from around both gear lever connections where they attach
to the front of the gearbox. Don't even take off the tinny cover held by the
three bolts ( I did ) just clean up whatever you see. Work things around,
lather with oil and with a bit of luck all will be well. You may have to
take out some of the floor to really see what is there but if your floor has
been out as often as mine it is not a problem. I just use expanding foam to
hold it in now - saves lots of time.

Anyone in North America got a tailgate to sell me or swap for 16" rims maybe?

I got mine from Blanchards. Safari had it - but when I was phoning around
