Subject: Re: Front Tire Wear - IIA

Hi Peter,
If your front tires are worn on the inside edges, it is a a toe-in
/ toe out problem. You have to much toe-out , you should set them
at a slight toe-in of aprox 1.5 to 2.5 mm difference measured at the
rims (done by measuring the distance between the rims at the
front and the back) while the wheels are standing in the straight
ahead position on a flat surface, adjust, roll the car for a few
metres and repeat this until you have the right amount.
Quite easy to handle this yourself!

Huub Pennings

John asks about freeing sticky valves...

John, how did you determine that the valves are sticky? I may have a
similar problem, rough idle, won't pass emissions test, sucking at the
exhaust pipe (but not a steady, regular miss, mine is very irregular.)
First make sure your valves are adjusted properly.

Here's some of the ideas that I've tried:

Slowly pour some ATF (or Marvel Mystery Oil) down the carburetor at
medium engine rpm. (without stalling out the engine) (Very smoky!)

Add 1 quart ATF to oil and run for a "while" (ATF is very high detergent
oil - won't hurt the engine if driven easily, but cleans it out.)
Then change oil/filter and add a can of "Risoline" (valve lubricant)

Add 1 quart ATF to full gas tank. (Smokes a good deal out the exhaust.)
I still have a little less than .5 tank left to burn off, takes too long
to use it all up if you can't drive it around.

I've tried all these with no luck, but I'm not positive that it's just a
sticky valve.

My next "trick" will be to pull the valve cover and soak things down with
Kroyl. (Kroyl is a "super lubricant" kind of like penetrating oil.)
If this doesn't do it, I'm pulling the head.

I found out a way to determine if it's ignition or valves. If a vacuum
gauge reads steady it's an ignition problem, but if the needle vibrates,
it's a valve problem. Before I learned this, I replaced wires, plugs, cap,
rotor, points, condenser. Then I tried the vacuum gauge and discovered a
"vibrating" needle. Experience is sometimes the best teacher, though not
always the preferred method of learning! ;-)

Good luck, and please share any other ideas or tips you get!

Subject: Freelander

I have just had a test drive in the new Freelander!

OK - it's not a series, a defender, or a rangie - and it might be a low
budget disco, but it's a nice car to drive.

My deal says he was also sceptical, "We have a ditch in front of the
garage, and anything which can cross it qualifies as being a Land Rover"
- the freelander crossed it OK.

There's lots of plastic - inclusing the front fenders and all trims, the
motor is small - open the bonnet and the first thought that enters your
head is "OK - and where's the motor then?"

But the motor is quiet - for an SIII diesel owner, overreving is easy -
especially when starting up - you can easily think that the motor has
stalled.

It doesn't drive - it sails - gentle swaying - helped no doubt by the
shocks and power steering.

And it's fast - at least compared with my 88" - this is a landie which
can earn it's owner a spoeeding ticket.

But it is still a car - a fine competitor to the jap SUV's - but still a
car. And forgive me for saying it - with a price tag of £40,000 for a
five seater version here in Denmark - I'll be driving the SIII 88" for a
few years yet.

Which reminds me - I'd better return to the workshop - tonight is
steering rods and joints.

Rover on...

Subject: Re: Sticky valves

Have you done a compression check on each cylinder?
To determine that I had a sticking valve, I did a vacuum test to see if
the needle was vibrating back and forth quickly. I then did a
compression check on each cylinder to check the pressure. The fourth
cylinder had a really low compression. If you squirt a little bit of
oil into the chamber of the suspect cylinder, and the compression
increases then it is one of the rings. If the compression stays the
same, then it is a valve.

I hope that I remembered all of this correctly.

Good Luck,

Brian

Bonjour à tous,

I have a 1960 Ser II Hard top for sale.

- Frame needs rear X-member w/extensions
- Rest of frame is solid (except 1 outrigger)
- Stored inside for past 17 years
- 2 liter engine (not seized, am trying to make it start)
- tailgate + taillid
- body is ok, few dents, no rips in alloy
- 16" wheels
- complete

Her name is Mathilda and would make a great restoration project. Too nice to
be a parts car in my opinion.

Asking price = 1200$ Cdn

I am located in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada, about 30 miles north of the
Vermont/Quebec border.

Thank you,

Michel Bertrand

You Will need a diesel compression tester. this opperates a t a much
higher pressure than a petrol one. The test is performed either by
removing an injector or a glow plug. this will depend on the engine
being tested. On a series Diesel I suspect you would take out athe
injectors.

Subject: rear oil seal

So, the rear hub on Tigger is slowly showing oil stains. I decide to change
the rear oil seal out.

Changed it and put in a new one. I even installed a new D-90 style vent on
the axle case to make sure that pressure wasn't causing problems.

Three days later, the oil stains are back. It isn't too bad but I'd rather
not have it if possible.

Can someone please share their technique(s) with me? Thanks in advance!

Hello to all on the list.
I looking to fit another motor into my rover I have the chance to pick up
2x's ford V6 2.5 Granada motor. I know nothing about Ford motors. Do these
motors have a good or bad history? and are adaptor plates etc available?
The price the guys want is $250.00 NZD. Any Help/info would of course be
greatly appreciated.

OK, I'll try again. This time I've cleaned the message up in a word

It seems that Graham didn't send this message to the Coiler or Series list
so here goes.

Hi guys,

I know I'm a bit of a newbie here, but everyone's been a great help to me so
far.

Problem :-

When I picked up my Series III (1974 88" Hard Top), one of the rear
wheels came off while I was turning a corner - not the nicest experience
when your used to driving a Ford Explorer! After the skid and, luckily,
painless recovery of the wheel I discovered that the old girl had come down
hard on the wheel as it had left the beast! So I now have a nasty dent in
the rear bodywork - pushed UP from underneath - not a normal impact dent -
any suggestions on straightening her out would be greatly awaited!!! (?)

Neil

P.S. The old girls name is now the U.S.S. Reliant .... or Robin for short
(draw your own conclusions!) - and as a result of her accident she is going
to sport a new white coat, full United Federation of Planets Decals and her
registry number.....are we sad?

Actually the 130 is still a 127 inch wheelbase, early one were called
127's and when the marketing department got hold of it, it became the
130. (after all the 90 is really 92")

Is available in many different body forms, or even whith out a rear body
at all, so that specialist builders can put their own rear body on.

In the UK they are very popular with electricity supply companies and
with our Enviroment Agency (who look after rivers ect). These two
users groups tend to go for crew-cab style vehicle. Ie. a four dour
front passenger compartment (imagine a 110 county body chopped off
behind the rear doors) with a large box body on the back.

There has been a few of the hi-cap style pickup body variants for sale
recently as ex-MOD disposals with fairly low mileage. These were used
as Rapier AA missile battery tractors equipped with V8 and front
electric winches, these go for about 7K UK pounds.

Are the stains on the outside of the wheel? If so, it is not likely to be
hub seal. More likely to be a leak between the hub and the driving member,
or the hub cap itself.

I usually use silicone to seal between the hub and the driving member.
Also make sure the felt gasket around the halfshaft (just behind the
1" nut on the end of the half shaft is OK. Finally, apply a round of
silicone on the inside edge of the hub cap before fitting it.

Oh, and make sure the 6 bolts holding the driving member to the hub
are tight. On some hubs, one of the bolt holes have a small channel into
the hub itself. Presumably so you can add oil through it. If the bolt in
that hole is loose, oil can seep out there.
