Subject: Radiator Questions

I finally yanked the radiator yesterday, had the pin-hole-sized leak in the top
tank fixed, and the thing flushed and pressure tested. Seems good to go, but
the radiator guy cautioned to leave the 10 lbs. cap on and that 10 lbs of
pressure is all he thought the thing could handle. What is the correct cap for
the radiator? Should I be worried?

I'm against "sealing" the list from outside access. There are a number of
people, myself included, who participate on this list via the World Wide
Web interface <lro-info.html> and, as a
result, are not "subscribed" to the list. I suppose it would be possible
for us to "register" to allow us to post--but that means more
administration which in turn makes for more work for Bill and our friends
at Sun. (And I'll only have to register 4 or 5 email addresses for
myself--and will lose the ability to post from "anywhere on the road".)

It should be noted that Bill Caloccia is pretty aggressive about policing
spam on the lists. We really don't see that much. There is a "blacklist"
server that prevents most garbage from getting through and when something
does slip by the appropriate Postmasters are contacted. Plus (and this is
my favorite) an invoice gets sent to the spammer for the advertising as per

Now we haven't actually taken anyone to court for non-payment--yet--but it
should make for an interesting time when we do.

How true. I must say that during the years I've been a part of lro, spam has
been the least of the problems. I usually delete it by the giveaway subject
line, and hear about it from the reactions on the list.

Yeah, a message or two will sometimes slip by, or Corn Flakes will try to sell
a *rare* rover, or Giles will get happy about some w*nch ;-) (haha), but it
really doesn't affect us like the dreaded bounced mail (does it?); who can
forget those epic days when all we see is: "Message received, thanks..." a few
hundred times a day...

This idea to have subscribers only post to list is fine provided there is a
category of subscriber (say registed member) created that doesn't receive
the list posts or digest.
I unsubscribed when going on vacation and haven't resubscribed because I now
read the web digest. This way I can read it when I'm ready, if I don't read
it it can't clog my mailbox, if my server is down the list doesn't get bad
messages etc.

Subject: SIIA Bug-eye - Project's first run.

I should probably emphasize that the bug-eye series IIA was only
produced for a few short months somewhere between 1968 & 1969. The
headlights were soon 'properly' integrated into the wings ala the Series
III. Sussex's '69 as seen on my web page gallery, came off the factory
floor in March, 1969 and has the fully integrated head lights. You can
tell a Series IIA of this vintage from a Series III by the galvanized
steel grill Vs a plastic grill for the SIII. The door hinges on a SIIA
are all sticky outy Vs the more flush variety of the SIII Then there's
that plastic dash board... ;-)

BTW, my 1961 project vehicle saw first light last night! I bolted on
the new clutch slave cylinder, spent 15 seconds bleeding it. and away I
went. Well up to the top of the driveway anyway...forgot to secure the
battery and ended up dragging it along =8-0 Luckily, it didn't short out
on anything!

Now it's time to start some serious panel beating.

no. the bug eye IIa was a bastard unto itself.
Us girly-men will continue to drive our synchro-transmissions ever so
happily along with all the other girly-people of the world who all have
synchro transmissions too.

David, them's fytin' wurds round this list ;-)

Sounds like a Bugeye challenging a SIII to a 5mph bumper duel, doesn't it? ARB
bumpers will be removed to keep things even...

Me, what I would do if I had a IIa Bugeye in pieces, I'd probably try to
retro-fit it with a IIa grille, the one with the lamps in the right place
(IMHO). I guess it all boils down to what one's personal vision of a LR is...
Even though I drive a 110 every day, it isn't really what my mind pictures a
land rover to be. If I was hypnotized and asked to draw a LR, what would come
out is probably a 3-door LWB IIa with full (patched) soft top, bonnet mounted
spare, worn tires (7.50x16) and slightly rearward sagging springs... body
obviously not in concours condition, probably green, faded galvanized bits and
a dog in the passenger seat (a canine one)...

oh well... maybe one day I'll find it.

eggs are cheaper in the country and so are Lucas bits if you know where to go.
Look in the yellow pages under auto electric and find a starter/generator
rebuild shop that is familiar with tractors, specifically Massey Ferguson.
There's your source. I took a 70amp Marelli from a 2.5 engine in to be
reworked and the guy I used didn't even blink; said, "yeah, just like that
Ford tractor alternator over there", and pointed to his shelves. same way with
Lucas, not as scarce as first appears.

Shipfitters disease strikes again!

Remember my postings in February about the 88" SIII which SWMBO rolled
in the snow? This was going to be a quick firewall replacement eh?

Well it's now June and it's still in progress - I took the firewall off,
stripped the motor, painted the block, made a few repairs on the chassis
forks, stripped the entire chassis (again - 4th time in 8 years) and
painted the lot with hammerite, services both axles - new swivel balls,
bearings, seals, brakes, cylinders, brake lines, serviced both trannies,
new transmission brake shoes, in fact all wear-out-able parts have now
been changed for new.

Then I have decided to mount new rubber strips on all doors, new doors
and door tops, and a new right wing (send hand probably - something's
got to be second hand on this restoration!)

Add to that new door trim panels, a complete rewire, new light fittings,
and a re-spray all round.

Not bad for a 1979 SIII - well at least the fuel tank cap is that
old....

I might have it on the road by July.

Wow - I love rovering! Who wants to be driving in these cars when you
can have them in the workshop for six months?

...but the 101 radio van was a special conversion by Marshalls using a
standard 101 chassis.

Most were used for radio vans (therefore presumably 24V) and electronic
warfare, but some were used as mobile workshops. \these vehicles have 2 side
doors and a rear door.

The hard tops with only one side door and none at the rear and a massive
telescopic thingy are incredibly rare and were used for specialist
surveillance roles. I would have thought this would mean being
inconspicuous - not easy in a 101.

Anyway, surely an ambuliance body would be better for a camper? No bodily
conversions needed, loads of room and still a few around...

Could do with a hardtop myself - fed up of dribbly 101 canvas...
...especially when said dribble lands in ear-hole at 4am!

Cheers,

Micky.

Subject: Heater blower

Hi all; I have seen some info on the swap of the serII heater motor with a Tr7
heater blower on the list. I've just acquired a TR7 motor and heater core, so
I need to know if anyone has used the core and the blower together or just the
blower. And if so is the blower a direct swap for the SerII blower?
I've rebuilt the serII core but still can't get enough heat into the inside.
Now i "m trying to increase the amount of air coming in,maybe that is the
problem. The TR7 motor is a 4 speed so it should put out major air compared
to the stock blower.
Thanks in advance

Subject: body re-install - thanks!

Thanks to all who responded with tips on re-installing the body.
What complicates it a bit for me is that the body was loosely
re-assembled by the PO after he had spent a whole summer MAKING
a new frame for it from scratch (it's a beauty, this frame,
more solid than an original, all welded from thicker steel, in
sealed box sections with drain holes and in which he pumped some
oil), so it's hard for me to know how it should line up. I'll
use the tips and start with the bulkhead, now that I have the
drivetrain pretty well in there, and line up the doors with the
rear tub. Wish I had more room,in the single garage, to take off
all the body parts and re-assemble (I know, some of you
probably think "lucky, you have a garage!"). Anyways, thanks for
the tips and support - I'll get there and share the tale!

Subject: Front Tire Wear - IIA

Hi all,
My front tires are worn on the inside edges. Is this a toe-in / toe
out problem?
My LR mechanic helped me do the last adjustment - we set the toe-in to
zero. I know it's supposed to be about 1/16in - but I trusted that he knew
what he was doing - he's been around LRs for a long time. Do you think that
is what produced the tire wear?

Thanks in Advance - Peter Kaskan

Subject: Gearbox back together!

Thanks to Bill Leacock, Limey in exile, for the info on the gearbox and the
willingness to help a total newbie.

Got it back together after filing down the locating pin for the 2nd gear
locating pin. It was sticking up slightly above the bush and fouled 2nd gear,
which led to a host of symptoms.

After drifting out the mainshaft again, dismantling the mainshaft again,
reassembling the mainshaft again, drifting it back into the box and then
reassembling the box and bellhousing, I thought I had a big problem:

When in neutral, if I turned the primary pinion/input shaft, the mainshaft
rotated! All gears worked but it didn't seem to shift into neutral. Off with
the top cover, everything seemed right. Then it dawned on me to hold the
mainshaft and see if it actually had drive to it. Of course, it didn't but
because the new bushings for 2nd and 3rd gear are so tight to the shaft and
gears, even the slight force given to the gears from the layshaft was enough
to cause the shaft to turn...I guess that's what's meant by a tight gearbox.

Anyway, time to get back to reassembling the engine.

Thanks again Bill,

Nate

Subject: gauges

I am going to redo the dash of my older IIA 109. I will replace the large
multiquage (Amp/ Fuel) with a new set.

I want a 6oA ampmeter, voltmeter, tachometer,temp, oil pressure, high/low
beam light indicator. I also will need to replace some switches. Any
recommendations where I can get a good set of g that will look good in a
series vehicle? Any suggestions for a good tach?

Thanks

Subject: Engine noises

Thank you Bill <wleacock@pipeline.com> for your response

I feel you are on to something here. Because even before I took the local
dealers advice and dismantled the engine my gut feeling was that it was
something to do with combustion, the reason being was the noise was
accompanied by bluish smoke.
I have, as part of a general look round, carried out there test suggested.
It is detailed in the Haynes Manual. The book said that there should be a
noticeable drop in RPM with each one you loosen, which there was. I did
find that one of the unions to the distributor pump was loose at this time
and loosing a fair amount of fuel, come to think of it that is about the
time the noise started after I tightened the union. I never did the test
when the knocking noise was present. Yes this seems fairly convincing that
it is related as the knocking is not wholly related to power, it some
times came and went while not under power and sometimes it even disappeared
as I accelerated I .
I have today received all the parts from http://lr.merseyworld.com/ for a
fraction of the local LR dealers price.
I will rebuild this week end and carry out the test, assuming I get it
started.
One more appeal if there is any I should be checking before it goes back
together LET ME KNOW.
and Bill any more thoughts would be welcome

Cheers

I've had a look at this website, and it seems to me that the vehicle must
have been pretty top-heavy with all that load on the roof.

He says that he was carrying "two tyre casings, a lightweight nylon tent and
two 10x10 touring tents on the roof rack". At a guess the roof load would have
been:

Rack - 40 kg
Two tyres - 60-80 kg
nylon tent - 4 kg (insignificant)
two touring tents... doesn't say what kind, but if we guess they were
military style tents that could easily be 50 kg each with the poles.
That gives us... about 200 kg on the roof. I believe the specs say
max 75 kg on the roof, and in my experience this limit is not due
to strength, but the stability of the vehicle. The center of gravity
is moved higher, and in a tight turn, (or a skid in this case) this
could be enough to cause a rollover.

That said, I don't believe 200 kg is a big danger, but I've seen plenty
of vehicles (the British seem to be the worst at this) with 8 full
jerricans, 2-3 jerricans of water, two spare tires, a big military
tent, a couple of boxes of luggage, a shovel, a pick, a couple
of steel sand ladders and a spare roadspring tucked on the
roof rack. That's easily 400-500 kg on the roof. People typically use
roof racks that have supports down to the frame or the bulkhead
for this, but still... that does nothing to avoid the top heaviness.

'nuff said, just my .02, but take care with the heavy roof loads!
