The heart of my 1960 land Rover 109 pickup no longer beats true. She is no longer as pure as when she was born in Solihull. By my own hand she has turned into a fully kitted long range expedition Land Rover. I have made an attempt to keep her Rover, but I didn't pay attention to the year or model of Land Rover that the parts came from. But worse, I have used parts and materials from other makes of cars. The big dual gauge has been replaced with a tach from a MGB. I have two MGB fuel gauges metering the levels of my front two petrol tanks. The water temperature gauge is also from a MGB as is the voltage stabilizer. I have replaced the painted license plate lamp cover with a chrome one from a TR3. While I maintained a 2 door regular paint scheme, I matched the martin Walters original colour for the Dormobile roof to 1979 TR7 white. The body below the top is now, gasp, 1973 Jaguar British Racing Green. I must confess that I did not like the stock Land Rover greens. I was saved from an even greater sin by the virtue of the car being left hand drive. You see in 1992 I had both the Land Rover and Triumph engines apart at the same time. I discovered that the intake manifold from a Triumph engine matches the ports on the Land Rover engine. Even some of the mounting holes line up. If the steering box was not in the way, my Land Rover would today have a Triumph intake manifold with dual 1-3/4 SU carbs. I can not take your advice to regain a purity of spirit. For not only have I tainted the purity of my Land Rover, I have a dual personality that keeps me from owning just one kind of car. While I love my Landy dearly and have for the last 20 years she can not make me completely happy. For a part of me has a need for a fast red sports car. I have turned to my TR3A to find comfort during those times when acceleration from zero to sixty miles per hour in the same day* is not enough (*assumes no uphill sections or headwinds). >From the outside, my little vixen like TR3A looks like a 90+ point show car. Pop the bonnet and you see lots of polished aluminum bright work, chrome headers and a pair of DCOEs. You do not see the larger than stock pistons and valves; the special cam nor the porting and polishing done in the 9.5:1 head. While the Land Rover is used to go out and observe nature and wild life, treading as lightly as possible along the green lanes, the TR3A is a predator that hunts down Miatas and other modern forms of wildlife. I cannot choose between my old 1960 Land Rover whom I have lived with and loved for 20 years and my new 1961 Triumph TR3A whom I have lived with and loved for only 11 years. They are each a part of my soul. While I dearly love the solid stalworth hearted Land Rover, part of my soul has been whisked away by the siren call of Coventry and the hunt. At least I have been true to these two cars as my only auto loves for the last five years and they get along fine knowing that they are truly compliments of each other. I admittedly have flirted with an occasional series IIB, BJ-8 or XK140 DHC, but my two cars don't seem to mind as long as I keep it to an occasional flirt. Alas, I am but only mortal and cannot be a true and pure daughter of Solihull. This water thing with carpets and rubber mats has always been a problem with Landys - well, not so much a problem, but a "design feature" (you don't want it to float when you drive in deep water - else you loose your grip - tee hee) -- Anyway, to combat the rust in the front footwells on my S3 Landy - I spray it with "Waxoyl" (every couple of years) and just use rubber mats - The mats do tend to slide about for a few days (in my experience) - but they soon bed in, and the footwells seem to last. I suppose you could always drill a hole through the aluminium floor panels to hold the mats in place with bolts + large washer? :-) [Keeps the mats in place if you have a roll :-) ] In the others, I just have bare floor panels - and these seem to last okay. I do tend to paint the steel panels though if I notice rust, so maybe that helps. Of course, the rest of the vehicle is waxoyled all over (outside), and inside the chassis every year or two. From: slade@imagina.com (Michael Slade) Date: Sat, 30 May 1998 19:21:04 -0800 Subject: Range Rover Overheating Hi, Last night coming in from the coast, my fan-belt broke. The outer one that runs the water pump. I noticed it before it got too hot, topped up the rad. from a stream, let it cool down and limped into the nearest town. I got a fan belt and installed it about 30 miles from Portland and drove home uneventfully. The temperature guage never got above 1/2. Today while driving around the radiator continues to overheat and boil. I've had to top it up 3 times today and added about 1/2 gallon each time. I've checked the oil, and no mayonaise-looking crap, so the headgasket is intact (from what I can tell). I do notice that each time I've topped it up there is rad fluid all over the reservoir. Am I filling it to far? Also, why would the engine continue to overheat with a new belt installed and the tension properly set? Could the thermostat be jammed closed? I'm not sure what else there is under there. Any help is appreciated. Thanks! I attempted to adjust the brakes using the cam and found it didn't seem to be doing anything. I checked the shoes and found them just fine, so I thought the cams were at fault. I ordered new cams only to find that not only did it not fix the problem, but the cams don't even touch the back of the shoe. Thinking that the shoe was at fault, I ordered oversize shoes but this didn't help. What could possibly be wrong? I can't imagine that the shoes never did touch the cam because I always had brakes until one day it took the common two pumps to get brake. Now it is the only way I can stop. Tomorrow I am going to replace the master cylinder with an actual Rover one because for years I have been using an American Motors one without difficulty, but since I have this one I will put it on. Of course it won't have any affect on the cam problem, but maybe I won't need the two pumps. Anyone with ideas send them my way, I am stumped. From: Faye and Peter Ogilvie <ogilvi@hgea.org> Date: Sat, 30 May 1998 17:51:28 Subject: Re: Brake problems There is a pin on the brake shoe that the cam acts against. The came does not act directly on the flat part of the shoe but on this pin on the backing plate of the shoe. Is it possible that you have the shoes installed on the wrong side or position?? On an 88, the shoes look similar but are different because of the pin or lack of it. Things are a little different on the 109 but cam still actuates a similar pin. Frank gets an E for effort, accompanied by a virtually gold-plated virtual dipstick. Somebody tell Art what wenches are for: they're not for "keeping warm" -- they're for grinding and jerking. (Apologies to TeriAnn, but my mailer doesn't seem to have one of those fancy spell checkers.) And he doesn't have to wait for Steamboat -- it is "mounted" already.
