Gracing Boring with the title of 'town' would be generous. It's more like
a crossroads. Cal Ripken, the Baltimore Orioles hero lives nearby...( you
can't miss his house, it's bigger than Boring itself). All this is in
what's generally referrred to as Maryland's hunt country....the landed
gentry and all that. Good motorcycling area, if you mind the road apples.

Folks,

I have tried this route and although it is possible I found it cheaper to just
buy a new coil sprung chassis instead. I did investigate thru 'Surrey Off Road'
fitting Range Rover axles to my old 88" chassis but it is more difficult than
it sounds.
The steering drop arms, geometry etc are all different. If your chassis is not
in perfect condition save up and buy a galvanized one (coil sprung) from
Designa chassis.

A new coil sprung chassis, a pair of late defender axles and panhard rods etc
(disk braked front & rear) works out at 1800 UK pounds.(to build yourself)

The cost to convert my old chassis was the much the same - although I can't
weld to the standard required so a large chunk of that cost was for welding &
transport of my chassis to the workshop.

Late defender axles or Range Rover are about £250+ each for good used ones and
add to that the other parts required plus delivery and it soon adds up!

Good luck either way.

And larger budget by about 10 fold than Boring. However, we do have the
antique tractor pull...an event not to be missed.

Subject: Re: RR corrosion query...

I'm not much of a corrosion expert, but my approach is to keep moisture-traps
to a minimum, thus trying to prevent one of corrosion's best friends from
being present...

In a message dated 5/25/98 7:03:02 PM, you wrote:

>Out came the carpets, the foam-cell rubber mats and the rubber

And out they should stay too, if your car gets water or mud in it on a regular
basis. It does have a *Land Rover* badge on it somewhere, right ;-)... so it
won't look half odd without carpeting.

I've found the OEM LR foam-cell-backed mats to be terrible. Terrible moisture
traps, too. One may as well put wet sponges under the seats for the same
effect, but cheaper. The rubber ones they sell with the tire tread pattern may
not look as nice (or be as plush, but we already know you aren't worried about
that, being on *this* list), but they work well at holding on to the mud and
drips that come off your shoes, and are non-absorbent. It would be nice if RRs
had a form-fit (shaped) carpet that could be removed prior to off-roading, and
replaced afterwards for beauty's sake, as they do look good with the wall-to-
wall shag in them...

>There is quite a bit of corrosion that has me wondering what my logical
>next steps are to take.

Keep the moisture traps to a minimum; as above. Apply WD-40 liberally after
washing, wiping and vacuuming out the interior. I find that using the "probe-
attachment" on the vacuum helps suck water out of corners and crack-like
openings, then the WD-40 has a better chance of doing its thing. Then drive
around with the windows open, unless you are like my passengers; they're used
to the pleasant aroma of WD-40:-)

Someone on the list mentioned buying WD-40 in Gallon size; that's a handy
thing to have around. It works well at Water Displacing (WD), cleaning some
stuff and one can put some on hefty kitchen towels and wipe down interior
metal surfaces...

You may want to check that your door bottom drains are open & free of
obstruction. Open the door and (from the outside) aim a hose with a sprinkle-
type head on it at the window (like rain, eh) and see if the water comes out
the bottom quick enough. If you sense that you door is filling up, pry off the
panel and hava look. Incidentally, when my doors were closed (110), the bottom
seal was *outside* of the door drains, causing any rainwater that went into
the door to drip onto the (now removed) foam-cell mats. I'm working on a new
type of seal that seals inside the drip holes to let the water out... If you
wade, check that the holes in the kick-panels are plugged and the ones with
wires, you can silicone to stop water pushing through.

good luck and hose it out!

Subject: Re: RR corrosion query... but for *D* owners...

NAS Defenders will have the same problems that Slade's RR has if they don't
pay attention to the moisture that can get trapped in their carpets and
footwell mats. I first had problems with the OEM foam-backed mats when some
spare oil leaked out (of a bottle) in the back of mine. Soaked the mat.
Repeated washing with all sorts of oil-cutters, etc., couldn't get it all out.
It still had that slippery feel under there, and when rung out, an emulsion of
ooze still came out. Ugh! So that was chucked.

Next came the realization that when it rained, water came in (no surprise
here), but then it stayed in, due to the foam-backed footwell mats. I'd come
back to a tropical greenhouse looking truck. You know, fogged windows (without
the teenagers in it), strange looking poisonous mushrooms on the gearshift,
vines below the kick panels, oh those were wires... etc. So they went in the
dumpster. Got the LR rubber mats; wash & wear...

Then, the seat-box carpeting got wet. (before that, there was this steel strip
holding the seat box carpeting at the sides that gets scuffed by the door,
feet, etc., that had surface rust and did nothing but hold the carpet snug;
they both got pitched). The carpet came out. Just in time, too. One or two
rivets were starting to get dandruff (white powder on their heads). Actually,
all the carpeting came out. The cheap crap on the rear wheel boxes held lots
of water, the seatbox carpet held a good amount too, and at the bottom, where
it was very unwelcome!

So, now the 110 may not look as plush as the others (the *investments* out
there), it may be a tad bit noisier inside, but it certainly looks the part,
works better, dries faster, is easier to clean and feels more like a Land
Rover ought to. I urge NAS defender owners who get them muddy & wet, inside &
out, which is pretty much all of us on this list, to have a good look at the
mats and carpeting and what's going on beneath them.

If anyone has foolproof & simple ways of preventing the moisture-trapped-in-
carpet sydrome, feel free to share with me and all of us.

Hi all

My wife, Elmari, was badly bitten by a fatal bug during the 50th anniversary
tour here in South Africa. Ever since we came back she's been looking out
for a shortie... and she's found one. A 1956-ish 88 hard top / station wagon
with SIIA engine, overdrive, capstan winch, some oil leaks (obviously the
"deluxe" model), goes well, stops well, and *she* was asking *me* if she
could buy it... obviously I said NO, I don't have time to work on *another*
hunkajunk, but she managed to persuade me to allow her to buy it... life is
*so* *hard*, I tell ya... :-)

Subject: Re: Heater options

Art - I've been through the same problem you have - and also have a RHD. A
couple of things I did before I bought a heater were to just insulate it -
I bought some rubber backed carpeting for the floors and firewall (helps
with the noise too). I then went and did numerous web searches for
aftermarket heaters.
There is one company in Texas that makes heaters and AC units for
classic cars - Vintage Air. I decided against this bc they would have been
awkward to install - and they took something like 13 amps - despite working
off the radiator.
The best company I found makes heaters, fans and cab pressurizers
for industrial/commercial trucks. I bought one - under 200$ and 5 max amps
- 20000btus. It is rectangular w dimensions of about 4x11x9.5. It uses hot
water from the engine. I mounted it in place of the center seat back and
ran the hoses and wire throught the seatbox under the car and into the
engine bay. The air is sucked into the front and is blown out towards the
driver and passenger - which tended to bake us even when it was cold.
So, I made some Al deflectors which directed the air towards the
winshield - hence my defrost system (along with some antifog stuff). The
company is in Ohio (maybe Cleveland), and has distrubutors across the
country - Maradyne Inc.
Anyway, these work great. They have a number of other models - from
15000btu to 40k+ btus and ranging in amperage requirements from 1.5 amps to
16 amps. The other model I liked was a cube of about 10ins. It had holes
for heater defrost tubes for the windows! This was also a 20kbtu unit - but
I couldn't find a nice place to put it. I have removed my heater for the
summer months - and plan on buying one of their fans.
Let me know if you want more info. I think this is the only way to
go - unless you want to play around with a propane or butane unit - but
then you have to worry about a whole other set of problems. You really
should give them a call and look over their catalog - and that goes for all
the rover lovers who freeze their @$# off in the winter! Cheers - Peter (PS
- Let me know if you want to sell your Smith's.)

Most of the credit for the Spring '98 AW goes to Brad Blevins who put
together the vast majority of the material. The AW staff including
Ken Burge, Peter Newell, Barbara Red, Jim Red, and others reformatted
the magazine to Windows Adobe Pagemaker, organized the advertising, and
updated the Calendar, Marketplace, Club and Parts/Service listings, etc.
John Benham, Daniel Oppenheim, Rob Harris, Ken Dallison, Jocelyn Watkin,
Bill Burke, Bill Davis, Dave Hampson, Myles Murphy, Dirk Tisher, Granville
Pool, Mark Ohno, and other LROA members and supporters wrote articles,
sent photos and provided drawings. Member clubs, such as the Flatland
Rover Society and the Florida Land Rover Club, provided material to share
with other Land Rover clubs around North America. Our thanks to everyone!

Although Medhi Saghafi volunteered as editor, he did not work on this issue,
hopefully he will on the next one. The AW is not a one person job and
credit does not go to just one person. The AW comes together a lot easier
when each of the department writers and editors, advertisers, sponsors,
members and Clubs in a team effort submit material for us all to enjoy.

As always, LROA needs more volunteers to help with the Association and
the Aluminum Workhorse newsmagazine. Please continue to send us your
articles, photos, tech tips, drawings, news items, suggestions, letters,
Club calendar items, want ads, and anything else of interest to Land
Rover owners. Your fellow LROA members want to hear from YOU!

ALL of the credit for the 50th Bash at Hollister goes to Geoff Jackson
who thought of the idea last year, volunteered as LROA Event Coordinator
for the 50th Bash, reserved the campsites, organized the event, found
local sponsors, coordinated volunteers, and ran an excellent event.

We had a very nice turnout, some vehicles traveling a ways to get here,
other members flying in, lots of day trippers. It was a bit nippy at
first in the evenings, but very pleasant during the days. Company was
great, food catered by the Ministry of Food was great. We had off-road
driving lessons and a winching seminar, daily trail rides, a GPS course
and field event, some Rovers being stuck and a VW Van really stuck.
Evening videos, an awards ceremony, an auction, lots of checking out each
others Rovers, and event t-shirts and hats on sale, vendor goody bags, and
the Redwood City dealer selling LR Gear. In all, a very pleasant weekend.

Many thanks and our gratitude to the many sponsors and vendors, as well
as the staff of the State of California State Vehicle Recreation Area at
 Hollister. Listed alphabetically,

Special thanks to numerous member volunteers, in particular Peter Newell,
Reed Cotton, Trevor Bacolini, Barbara and Jim Red, Fred Stolar, Matthew
Jackson, Dan and Penney Marks, and of course to Geoff Jackson who took on
total responsibilty for the 50th Bash as LROA Event Coordinator. A hearty
 cheer all around!

Geoff managed to earn over $500 for the club, which was nipped to $460
as Hollister raised it's camp fee last month. We still have many t-shirts
and hats for sale. Hats are one size fits all for $8 ppd. T's come in
L, XL, and XXL in either tan or grey shirts at $12 ppd. Send your checks

going to the ANARC Land Rover 50th Anniversary celebration at Geek Peak
NY and find out for yourself just how boring The Green Rover really is??
She may put you to sleep, but you will have a hard time ignoring this

The Green Rover will be set up in full expidition trim in the British

If you can not make Geek Peak in NY, The Green Rover will be at the
Portland Oregon All British Field meet on Labour day weekend and at the
Palo Alto California All British Field meet the following Sunday.

If you can not wait that long to see The ultimate in "Hunt Country" chic,
head off to North Eastern Arizona in June and look in the Red Rock desert
country. She is easy to recognize. Just look for the boring green 109
two door in Dormobile long range expidition trim.

not dumb at all....... but not easy to answer.
My 4 cyl engine was actually designed (and the design is owned) by a company
called SOFIM (Society of French and Italian Manufacturers and guess who that's
a patnership between) ........and built in a bloody big factory in Italy with
the name FIAT on the front.

The Fiat Ducato Van, is built in Italy, France and Germany.
The Renault Traffic van is built in France.
The IVECO Turbo Daily truck is built in about a dozen countries and sold under
at least three company names and more model names depending on the country....
you could buy it as an IVECO, or as an IVECO-FORD or as a FORD.
Then, of course we move up to real big trucks............

Well "Mary", as the military seats were a bit uncomfortable (OK lousy)
in my 101, I took careful measurements, and ended up fitting Toyota 4Runner

They should fit the S1. A shame the S1 is just not quite the caliber of the

that's your reason for needing better seats.

Subject: NEEDED-scuttle vent part

Well I obviously have too much time on my hands from being unemployed and
got myself into trouble.

I decided to disassemble my rusty scuttle vent openers and have them
regalvanized. I was drilling out rivits when the drill cought the part,
pulled a rivit loose and launched a couple parts. I found one but not
the other. I spent about 10 minutes crawling around with a strong
magnet. I even fired up the compressor and blew leaves in a 50 foot by
50 foot area to find the part. No luck.

I have the screw style scuttle vent openers found on pre-series IIA Land
Rovers.

There is a rectangular captive nut with round arms sticking out on two
oposit sides. This nut is mounted on the arm of the opener and is moved
by the stationary threaded stock attached to the knob.

I'm now missing one captive nut.

Does anyone have a trashed pre-series IIA scuttle vent opener with a good
captive nut that I can beg or prurchase. Once the arms get regalvanized
my vent openers will be in excellent condition. Assuming I get a new
captive nut.

Can anyone help?

I'm in a town called Glenville, NY. It's about 15 min. North of
Schenectady, NY. That's not to far from Albany. Drop a line if you're
passing through.

Terri:
Do you know anyone with a metal detector? I'm always dropping small
metal parts that I usually need badly at the time. After crawling around on
my hands & knees for awhile, I get the detector out & usually find it pretty
quickly. If you don't know anyone that has one you can usually rent one for
the day from a dealer. Look up Metal Detectors in the Yellow Pages. If
that doesn't work check out the newsgroups for Treasure and/or Gold. You
could also try http://www.lostreasure.com They have a chat feature you
might be able to find someone in your area through. I haven't used the chat
so I really can't say. Content = Lost Land Rover Parts!!! BTW. If you
find one, make sure you get instructions on using it. Some of them can be a
little tough to get used to. Good Luck!!!

Subject: smoke

 Hi All,
I give you some suggestions:
Black smoke -faulty fuel injectors
-fuel injection/distributor pump timing incorrect
Blue smoke -blocked or overfilled air cleaner -valve clearance incorrect
-low cylinder compressions - engine burning oil due to general wear.
I had too. A thick white/blue smoke when I was warming up the engine, for 3
or 4 minutes. I have a SIII '78 88" diesel , so I put in the tank a
fuel-additive to clear the valves and injectors. It worked , the smoke from
exhaust is less than before.
cheers
