From: TeriAnn Wakeman <twakeman@cruzers.com> Date: Fri, 22 May 98 07:28:23 -0700 Subject: overlanding + photography = ??? I'm discovering that there seems to be a real interest in trips that combine photogrpahy with 4X4 driving. Maybe this is somthing worth doing more than once. There are lots of places I like/would like to tour and photograph. On normal 4X4 runs I have felt pressured not to stop for a picture, or if I do, to hussle. For me photography is a Zen like thing that takes its own time. On the Border to Border Trek I didn't take the big camera because I pecieved that there wouldn't be time to set it up. But there were way too many times I passed up a picture I wanted to take becuse the group was on a roll. Even still, I dropped out of the group frequently to take a picture. Running alone trying to play catchup because I stopped for a picture was a common state for me during that trip. I enjoyed the Border to Border trip and the marathon nature of the pace was an interesting challange. But if I hadn't spent a month photographing much of the route area 6 months earlier and knew I would be back a month later I would have gone crazy for all the unexposed photos I left behind. I think I end up going out alone most of the time just so I can take photographs in peace without the pressure of people standing around wanting to be off but tying to respect my NEED to take a picture. I find myself torn between going on trips where I will have company of nice people with 4X4 Land Rover interests or having the peace to take pictures. It is beginning to look like there are others out there with the same infliction. The Red Rock trip will be an interesting experiment. maybe it will become the first of many overland photography trips. I think a trip of this kind would need to have a careful balance between getting from point A to point B and providing the freedom to look over a perspective image and become one with the scene. This will be an experiment and a learning experience.
