Ok folks, I hate to start this up again, because I have surrendered and joined the it-can't-be-done-club, BUT, it has been done, twice. There's a Camel Trophy Discovery from Mongolia here in Florida. With Florida tags that say Palm Beach on the bottom. With TDI engine. Stickers, racks, winch, you name it... I just didn't see the kayak on top. Nothing special or sneaky about how it came in, either. It is currently at Land Rover North Dade, with the interior bars and dash apart. The owner (who bought it at auction in Mongolia) is having a/c installed, and power locks/windows. $$$, I know. Anyway, the mechanic I asked at the 50th yesterday told me it is owned by a lawyer from the Boca/Palm Beach area who brought it in under the One-car-per- lifetime rule. He (the mechanic) told me that after the CT, two discos were left with the Mongolians, who auctioned them off... this guy got one for himself and the other for a friend in NJ who also brought it in. Now these cars are registered for the street, just like my rover; no funny manufacturer's tags, or voodoo here... Anyway, I'd like to find this guy and play the 21questions game... maybe he can add to that FAQ page. It's a brush/roll on polyurethane coating that incorporates ground up recycled tires for a grippy texture. Their WWW site can be found at http://www.truckworld.com/cote-l/index.html. It has technical data and an interesting "How To" review from one of the offroad mags. Offroad.com (RoverWeb hosts--so follow one of their links to the mother site so they get credit!) also has a review at http://www.off-road.com/4x4web/suzuki/reviews/durabak.htm I was thinking about a sprayed liner for FINSUP's tub but now I'm considering this product 'cuz I can do it myself. Although thinner than the spray-in liners, the product adheres to itself and thus is repairable if cut. (And thin isn't necessarily bad in my book.) Cost is $99/gal for black or $119/gal for colors. Supposedly a gallon is enough to do a normal pickup bed so it should be plenty for my purposes. They're sending me a sample chip. I asked for the light blue--which will no doubt be a horrible match with the marine blue. So I've probably got to decide between black or one of two shades of gray. Any "designers" out there have an opinion. If the stuff works out nicely, the roll bar and new rock sliders might get a coat as well... Floorboards-n-footwells? Tranny cover? Inside of the toolbox??? From: Peter Thoren <Peter.Thoren@genetik.uu.se> Date: Fri, 01 May 1998 22:06:04 +0200 Subject: How set timing? Dear list, After two hectic weeks of work I now have time to finally fix the timing chain. I dont want to spend half a day taking everything apart again just because the timing was wrong so I need some advice concerning how to set the timing. The cranksahft wheel is no problem, just to set the flywheel at the EP mark but the camshaft wheel is more problematic. My manual tells me to use a dial gauge unit to measure exactly when the no. 1 exhaust valve is fully opened (by pinpoint it from both directions). There must be other ways to measure this. Bill Leacock told me that a diesel engine needs a perfect timing and that it is a very good idea to use one of these instruments. Alternatively he told me it is possible to use a ruler but that it isn´t as exact. In the LR FAQ Alan Richer suggest using a pencil and a sheet of paper to find out when the valve is fully open. Are there other suggestions out there on how to do this? A dual gauge unit is very expensive and I have actually never seen one here in Sweden so getting one is not an option. I ordered all the spare parts from FamousFour in England and the new camshaft chainwheel is marked with two "P" marks, one at the center and one at one of the teeth. I assume these marks are for setting the timing in a petrol engine but can I have some use of these marks? With th etwo following questions I am sure I will be this days laughing matter. Th equestions are very basic which I previously thought I was sure of. I need to know which valve is the no. 1 valve? I was sure it was the one in the front end of the engine but the more I think of it the more unsure I get... I also need to know the direction of the engine rotation. Once again I was sure it was clockwise but just to be sure I ask the list. I am always glad if I make someone happy so please make fun of my obvious lack of knowledge...
