Hi All,
Well as you should know Chicago was hit by a snow storm yeasterday. On
the way to work I had the chance to help several people who were
blocking traffic. I even got to pull my boss's car out of a ditch.
Cars parked at my work got drifted in & after digging them out some got
high centered so I used my tow strap to drag them out.
The people who thought I was nuts for driving an old clunker LR now
have a differant view. Score 4 cars saved.
Worse day for many people was huge fun for me helping others. To Cool.

Regards,
 Rob Davis_Chicago

Hi:
I just tried the AB websight. The server must be down. I don't know
thier e-mail address but they are a local phone call for me. Would you like
me to call them & relay a message for you? Buy the way, are we talking
about Atlantic British in Mechanicville, NY with a web address of
www.roverparts.com?

Subject: LR for son

My son and I are restoring a 68 IIa. He turns 1 year old in 2 weeks. I hang
him from the rafters in the barn in one of those jumpy-seats and he falls
asleep (at least until I fire up the angle grinder) while I work on the rover.

Working on cars is the best thing you can do with a child. When I was 14, my
father got me involved in car racing. Not only did I miss lots of illegal
beer bashes, I developed a love for all things mechanical. Oh, did I mention
that I'm 29 years old and my father is still my best friend? Something for
you guys with 14 year olds to consider.

Off-road, your girlfriend may have some trouble with a 109, unless she
has Rambo arms. Having been in a few situations where the weight of the
truck is on one side, as in a deep mud hole or rut, you're almost lifting
the the whole forward end with the front wheels when trying to turn the
steering wheel. 'Course anybody will have trouble in such a predicament.
That's why they call it Armstrong Power Steering.

Does your SIII have a single brake circuit or dual?

If it's single, I could probably dig up a diagram from a parts book and

I've just finished replacing all the pipes on my vehicle. Now if I

I'm still in the midst of rebuilding my s2a, lsat week I replaced the
non perational ether filled temp
guage with a non functioning electronic sending unit(I didn't know it
was junk) the engine ran fine
and was not overly hot at thiat point... I determined that the sending
unit was junk so I replaced it
with the one off of my spare 71sIII voila the guage worked(guage was
sourced out of a 70 ish
sIIa) now the engine steadily climbs into the red and would no doubt
continue if I did not shut it
down... I assumed it was the thermostat so I replaced it with an
original and functioning 160
degree unit, the engine still gets very hot. WHY? it was fine before I
replaced the second sending
unit. the only other chhange I have made is I put on an old Solex carb
because my carter was
running too rich. somewhere between those changes the engine decided it
was going to overheat. I
have checked out the waterpump and it appears ok, the radiator is a late
model one and is fine, the
system holds coolant, there are no leaks... is it possible when I
changed sending units air got
locked in the system? this is driving me nuts I don't see how changing
the sending unit could cause
an engine to get so much hotter than before(its clearly hotter to the
touch etc...)

thanks for any suggestions

Clayton Kirkwood asked if there were any father-son Land Rover restorations
in progress. I will report yes, two in this family: Son Colin - 14, Series
III 88" petrol wagon; Son Graham - 12, Series III 109 one tonne, soon to be
powered by GM 6.2 diesel w/ Samurai adapter.

Our boys have been around Land Rover's all their lives and I didn't have to
put them up to this. They actually ask why people would want to drive
anything else.

This concept is both good and bad; good - justification for projects, bad
- will leave me without a Series LR daily driver at the end of the
projects.

Maybe we fathers should talk about this. I'm not suggesting arranged

Subject: Land Rover Steering

On Mon, 09 Mar 1998, Peter Thoren asked "How strong do you need to be to be
able to handle the steering in a 109 series 3? My girlfriend is 162 cm tall
(short...) and weighs approximately 50 kg. Will she have a problem, with
steering and maybe also with reaching the pedals?"

Should not be a problem. One benefit of the 109 is the adjustable driver's
seat. It can be pulled up close for Shorty and pushed back for you.

"I am 189 cm and weighs approximately 100 kg. Will I have a problem fitting
behind the steering wheel?"

No. I am 183 & 100Kg and have adequate room in my 109. Depending on your
body proportions, you may find the top of the windscreen is a bit low. To
see traffic lights, you may need to lean forward and look up. This is
because Land Rovers were designed 40 or 50 years ago when most of the people
on the rainy island were smaller than we are.

"Stupid questions, maybe, but highly relevant to us."

Nah; the only stupid question is the one you don't ask.

Adrian,

You may want to try an aviation parts supplier (if there's one near you). if
you have/have access to an air compressor, then all you need, is an air hammer
(rivet gun), bucking bars, and any required hammer bits, for shooting rivets.

Note: if shopping for an air hammer, the more BPM's (blows per minute), the
better.

Pop rivets can work, but they don't hold as well.

Well...it may not work in that condition!

Hmm, it's a bit of a worry. I've never seen any other type of fuel pump
except where the bowl is on top. But then, I've nearly always had British
cars. I don't think it's because I'm Australian. 8-)

Sounds entirely normal to me.

Peter,
I've got a '61 SII HT. Niether my wife nor I have any problems with the
pedals, and as far as the steering goes, it's a little on the heavy side when
your just creeping along i.e. manuvering into parking spaces, but it is really
nothing that should scare you off. Providing of course everything is in good
repair; and in normal driving situations it is just like any other
non-powersteering vehicle. My wife is 4'10" (not a typo) and weighs in at about
95 lbs. I on the other hand am 5'10" and just over the 200lbs mark
Good luck with your new venture.
