I used to have a mixture of 80/90, water, mud and clay silt in my diff, ran flawlessly, changed it every 6 months though, usually when the diff was frozen solid! Now I've got snorkels on the vents, solved the water/mud problem, but how will I ever know if I run outta 80/90? ;-) Con Seitl 1973 III 88 "Pig" BTW, mail is coming a little better now! ------------------------------[ <- Message 4 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 980119 -> Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

Date: Sun, 18 Jan 1998 10:24:16 -0700 From: jello@dns.ida.net (Phil Bates) Subject: Supercharging a Land Rover?? There was some supercharging info on the MG list so I am including them here. I am rebuilding a '66 Land Rover. The engine needs a complete workover, and I am tearing down now (the crank is already out for a re-grind). I was planning on having the head machined to a 9:1 compression ratio (along with hardened seats etc.), getting a better performance cam, and buying Automotive Components' performance package that includes a new intake manifold, muffler, and a 1 3/4 SU set-up. I got to thinking, this is going to cost a little upwards of $1200 just for the performance parts. Then I remembered Land Rover made the Tdi turbo deisel, and that my stock set-up provides a 7:1 compression ratio, which would be about ideal for turbo- or super-charging. Has anyone done this, and how were the results?? I'd still need to have the hardened valves put in, and I'd assume I'll still need better exhaust, carburation, and a performance cam. Anyone have any thoughts on this?? Please respond to me in person, as I am not on the land rover mailing list. At the base of the bit that you turn is a square hole with a plastic bit sticking out. Pry out the plastic and pull it round the circumference of the hub and a plastic strip will appear, rather like a cable tie. With this removed the outer end will come off and let you get at the rest. it has been a while since I did one so I hope this is clear enough. From: Alan_Richer@motorcity2.lotus.com Date: Sun, 18 Jan 1998 18:07:26 -0500 Subject: Re: Fairly Locking Hubs.... One removes them quite simply. You tell me, and I send you two drive plates like the ones on the rear axle to replace them with. You then purchase new axle felts, hub caps and cotter pins and perform the swap, following the directions in your manual under "Axle Shaft Removal and replacement". Once you've got everything buttoned up with the new drive pates, you then pack up the freewheel hubs and send them to me... Quite seriously, all you need to do is remove the freewheel hubs from the ends of the axles and put on drive plates like the ones on the rear axle. Top the oils back up afterwards and you're golden. If you want a set of replacement drive flanges, email me... The photos have been taken over the last few years at a couple of our favorite locations and show our aluminum friends in some rather precarious situations, some of which earned this gang the reputation as "the people most likely to do silly things with Land Rovers in the water". (LROI Nov. 93) Those of you who attended the OVLR Birthday party in '97 and receive their newsletter will already have had a sneak peek at a few of the photos, but there are plenty more. This is just the beginning. We have many more photos waiting to be added in the coming months, but please, come take a look now, I'm sure you'll be glad you did. Date: Sun, 18 Jan 1998 18:35:01 -1000 From: Faye and Peter Ogilvie <ogilvi@hgea.org> Subject: Re: Fairey Locking Hubs.... There is a flat head screw in the side of the large actuating knob/hub, remove this screw and carefully pry out what looks like a nylon washer underneath. It is actually the end of a retaining strap that wraps around the inner circumference of the hub and holds it on. Pull this strap out and the hub/knob will come off. There is a large diameter o ring that acts as the oil seal inside the hub. Be careful not to lose this or cut or otherwise ruin this when putting them back together. Unbolt it like a drive flange once the hub is removed and you are done. RN sells a rebuild kit which consists of a new nylon retaining strap and the o ring if you need it.
