Thanks for the advice. The problem was in the tail light assembly. I
opened it up and there was my problem - dirt in the sockets. I guess it
was just chance that both gave out at the same time. I called LR and
they said that they are working on a replacement to meet DOT standards.
Hope it's out soon.

I found that I had moss growing inside one tail light and the other had
slightly less moss and some clay! The problem is the rubber seals which
perish after some time as they are the only external defence against
water etc. entering the assembly via the lens.

I'm looking for the stuff that I need to be carrying in case my overdrive
fails. The overdrive was installed by the PO and it sounds fine, but there is
a bit of play/driveline lash when it's engaged, so I'm prepping my spare parts
bag for trouble ahead.

I don't have the backing plate for the SIII transmission and whatever
internals that were removed to make way for the OD, so if the OD fails I am
SOL. Can anyone specifically identify the parts I need, and better yet, does
anyone have the parts for sale/trade or know of a reasonable source?

Simple, really.

You need the transfer case rear bearing plate with bearings installed - SII
or III doesn't matter - they never changed other than on the FC low-range
oddballs.

Also, you need a new locking tab to replace the one presently holding in
the clutch assembly (the bit with the bearing on it) and the transmission
output gear to take the clutch's place.

These items and a BFH and drift to get the nut loose should do it.....8*)

I carry them myself - better safe than stuck.

In addition to the parts and tools Alan mentioned, you'll need the regular
gear which the OD part replaced; meshes with the intermediate gear in the
t-case.

I don't have a clew, but I know where to find one! (Sorry, old rigging
joke.) There are a number of things that need to be changed in the CGI
scripts to get 1998 online--and our listmaster has been "away from his
desk"--working on rebuilding his Rover in upstate NY. Unofficial word from
"BC" is that he might be forced to drop WWW support of the digest
anyhow--it takes up a lot of his time. I'd be sorry to see it go as well,
but certainly can't blame Bill if he finds better ways to spend his "idle"
moments. (Work is progressing nicely on his Series ride according to his
last account.)
So I guess you either need to bite the bullet and subscribe or do without
--sorry.

They are a great source. Most other places that sell LR harnesses buy from
them and then mark them up. Buy direct.

Just got off the phone with a dealer about the tail light assembly and
they did not have a time frame about the repacement being developed,

cover the back of the assembly. Has anyone tried this? Is it a

Hi Dave,

You haven't mentioned checking the coil...

Also check for vacuum leaks in the intake system. If you can, use a
vacuum gauge

If all else fails, take it to your local garage and have them put it on
an engine analyzer. Have them do a cylinder balance check. They shut
down each cylinder sequentially and compare the rpm drop. This is a
good way to find out if you have a bad cylinder. They can also check
the output of the coil.

Hank,

First thing to do would be to look at the FAQ on the web, referencing the
customs section. In short, US Customs will probably say NO. However, you will
find a kinder reception at, of places, the BATF. They have a form for bringing
in "de-milled" ex-military hardware for collectors. The guy who imported my 101
also has Ferret's, Saracin's, German half-track's, even really wild stuff like
105mm Self-propelled gun's and Chieftan Main Battle Tanks. His name is Greg Cash
and he is the US end of a company called Lionheart Vehicles. Ph 541-946-1611.
This not an ad, but he is a very nice guy to deal with, and he CAN get you a 101,
without resorting to looking in Luxemborg. For that matter, I believe Dave Ritchie
still has his TWO 101's for sale. He has a Radio body and a GS.304-422-0531 email
at dritchie@access.mountain.net and his 101's are already here in the US. And BTW,
go wash your mouth out with 90wt, "lawn ornaments", sheesh.

I'd avoid the marine shrink wrap. This is typically used by unscrupulous
yacht owners to avoid high haulout charges. By covering the boat in
shrink wrap, it actually reduces the overall size and length of the craft
by up to 20 percent, thereby saving hundreds of dollars every winter when
the boat is put up in the yard for maintenance.
I should think that if this were used on auto parts, you'd run into a
problem with the part fitting if it were shrunk. What do I know...

I believe the Castrol Girling rubber grease is pretty essential to
ensuring the proper operation and longevity of the clutch and brake
cylinder seals. It comes in little packets included in the rebuild
kits. However, years ago I bought a couple of large tubes of it from
the original and now defunct Atlantic British Parts in California. They
are the size of economy size toothpaste tubes, and one should last a
lifetime. I don't know if these tubes are still available in this
country. I would assume they would be in the UK.

For the early SIs with 1.6 litre engines there is also a "Registery".

In the UK Dunsfold has purchased a huge stock of ex-MOD SI parts.
Craddock is another major supplier. PA Blanchard has reasonable amount
of ex-MOD SI parts. Also a number of small SI specialists advertise in
the SI newsletter.

Also purchase "Original Land-Rover Series I" by James Taylor. I've seen

it in B&N and Border's. Not perfect but much more info then you're find
elsewhere.

Can anyone help me with some information where can I find and buy an
original "Land Rover V8" and "V8" side body badge/sticker for my SIII 109
stage 1, and also a big "Camel Trophy" badge/sticker to fit on the front
left and right door.

Ahhh...the mythical Girling Rubber Grease. For years, small tetrahedonal-
shaped packets would be included in "genuine" Girling rebuild kits. Then,
these disappeared, some time in the late '70'. As a result, owners hoarded
the stuff and jealously guarded it like gold.

>I use Castrol LMA in all the hydraulic lines already, would it be OK if

That's the standard operating procedure in absence of the special grease.
However, several years ago, RN started *selling* the stuff in 2.5 oz tubes.
No more hoarding! Joy!

More accurate, actually. A brake cylinder hone on a cordless drill works
nicely.... Cheers

Just a quick note to let you know that information about the '98 Winter
Romp, in Unity Maine is available on the DELRC website "Regional Events,"

I am currently rebuilding/restoring a 1955 Serie 1 86" and have found the
"The Land Rover Series One Club" (UK) to be valuable. They have a
Newsletter/magasin called LEGEND which I was able to obtain back copies of.
The newsletter has a lot of references to parts suppliers and lots of
technical tips.

John Craddock (UK) do have quite a bit of S1 parts, but can be expensive.

Well, I called my mate on Norfolk Island (Charlie Shaw
(longni@ozemail.com.au) and asked him about the conversion.

Firstly, I made a mistake. It isn't a slant 6. It is a 265ci hemi. He did
the conversionin 1975 and he says it was the best thing he ever did and it
is far better than the GM Holden 186ci engine conversion. After the
conversion he broke fewer axles and layshafts. Braekage is only a problem
in sand if the vehicle gets an oscillation going.

The SIIA was originally a 6-cyl car.

The kit was made in West Australia by a company called Kerr Engineering
(There is still a Kerr Engineering in Perth, WA - I could check if they
still do a kit) . The onversion fits the 225, 245 and 265 ci Chrysler
6-cylinder engines.

The adaptor plate is about 1/2" thick. Clutch is standard LR but the
flywheel is either Chrysler machined to suit the LR or vice versa. He
doesn't remember.

He changed the hemi to the cable operated SU carb as it was better suited to
the application. The radiator was moved forward 1/2", the fan was removed
and electric fans installed. He feels a bigger radiator would have been
better when off-road in summer.

Open road cruising is easy at 120kph and overtaking is a breeze. Fuel
economy is about the same as the 6-cyl LR engine at normal speeds.
