From: "Ron Beckett" <hillman@bigpond.com> Subject: Land Rover sales brochures etc. Date: Fri, 26 Dec 1997 08:43:37 +1100 This may be seen as too commercial by some (especially the Series list) but I came across this info from an Aussie company. Had it been just books, I'd have not worried about it but as it was, in the main, sales brochures, I thought there may be interest. The usual disclaimers apply. All prices are in Aussie dollars (A$1 = US$0.65 at the moment so they are cheap buying to NAS readers). They have a lot of other stuff on other British makes. If you have a particular interest, email me directly and I'll sedn back the info on that marque. Date: Fri, 26 Dec 1997 09:51:14 -0500 (EST) From: Nick Fankhauser <nickf@co.wayne.in.us> Subject: Devin's fan Belt Hi Devin- welcome to roverdom. It looks like you've already been introduced to Mr. Lucas. The fan belt being loose really does explain just about everything. Taking the questions in order: >Driving home, the >engine would want to stall every time I came to a light or stop sign. The battery was so dead that you were running the spark coil off of the alternator only, so at very low idle, it will begin to misfire. >My charge light does work, and when I first start the vehicle (from a >jumpstart), the red light glows and pulses very slightly. After some >revving, the light goes away. This bears out the hypothesis that your alternator isn't pushing out enough juice to run the ignition system at idle- (Not a problem if your battery is there to help it.) Note that the charge light comes on when the alternator is NOT charging, but the battery is low. It is a warning light, not an "all clear" light. >The interior light is actually brighter >at low RPMs and fades upon revving. Hmmm... puzzling. Must be a lucas bulb. >1. When I look under the hood, the fan belt is driving the >alternator, despite the belt being loose. Is it really the fanbelt? Remember that if you have no load on the alternator, it spins easily, so when you look at it with the hood open, it will seem to be fine in most circumstances- however, it may begin slipping if you turn the headlights on. It's also tough to tell when slippage is occuring- you can't really eyeball the difference in speed of two pulleys unless one of them is going really slow. >2. Now, when the motor is at idle, the interior light pulses somewhat >irradically. Is this becasue the fan belt is slipping? Could be, but it could also be normal with a low battery and the alternator not chargin yet. >3. At idle, my charge light is not on, although I know it works. Why >is it not on? If the battery is low, which I know it is, shouldn't >the light come on to indicate it is charging? The charge light tells you when you are not charging, but should be. >4. Can someone walk me through the fan-belt tightening process? An SIII person can give you a more detailed answer, but essentially, there should be a place somewhere on the mount where a mounting bolt goes into a slotted piece of metal. loosen all of the bolts slightly, and the slot-bolt a lot, and you should be able to pivot the alternator. pivot it out until the fan belt deflects easily about 1/2 inch, and then tighten all of the bolts starting with the slot bolt. It helps to have a friend help with this, or use a lever to make it easy to hold the alternator while you tighten the bolts. >5. Was my stalling problem after I was stranded related to the fact >that my battery was severly drained and my fan belt was slipping. I think so. Fix this as soon as you can- running for too long this way might damage the battery. >Thanks in advance You're welcome- good luck & stick with it. -NickF '62 SIIa Nick Fankhauser |Wayne County Information Systems Department NickF@co.wayne.in.us | http://www.co.wayne.in.us/wayneco http://www.infocom.com/~nickf ------------------------------[ <- Message 4 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 971227 -> Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

I've killed them both Well, since there is a chance of snow in the next few days I wanted the rovers in top shape. While doing some routine maintenance, I thought it would be a good idea to clean the sediment bowls. The red rover cranked up and made it about half way down the driveway, the white rover didn't get out of its parking spot. I have done this before with no problems, but now, no amount of priming will get fuel to the carb. I assume there's just some air in there but how do I get it out? Please help me before I have to explain to anyone else how I singlehandedly immobilized two landies. regards, joseph broach knoxville, tn '67 IIa 88" '68 IIa 88" ------------------------------[ <- Message 8 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 971227 -> Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

If not it will suck air at that point instead of drawing fuel from the tank. When you cleaned the bowl did you do anything to the screen or above such as the one way valves. From: "Ron Beckett" <hillman@bigpond.com> Subject: Charging problems Date: Sat, 27 Dec 1997 00:52:54 +1100 Devin Anderson asked: > My questions are this: >1. When I look under the hood, the fan belt is driving the >alternator, despite the belt being loose. Is it really the fanbelt? A loose fanbelt can still drive the alternator at idle (when you look under the bonnet) but when the revs come up and the load on the alternator increases as it begins to charge properly, the belt may slip. Some people will tell you that if it slips, you will hear it squeal. This is often but not always true. (I know this from experience with a car that had to be put on charge every day after driving it to work (60km). I thought the alternator was shot but it was a loose belt and it *didn't* squeal.) >2. Now, when the motor is at idle, the interior light pulses somewhat >irradically. Is this becasue the fan belt is slipping? Possibly. >3. At idle, my charge light is not on, although I know it works. Why >is it not on? If the battery is low, which I know it is, shouldn't >the light come on to indicate it is charging? No! The light will come one to tell you it *isn't* charging, e.g., like it does when the engine isn't running but the ignition is switched on. However, in the early Lucas alternator configuration, if the warning light is blown, the alternator won't charge. The alternator needs the current flow thru the globe to start charging. >4. Can someone walk me through the fan-belt tightening process? >I have not received my workshop manual yet. I see there are three >bolts, two within easy access up top, and another down below the fan >blades. I don't have a Series LR but I suspect the alternator configuration is the same as my Hillman, viz., a Lucas 15AC alternator. If so, there will be a long bolt thru the bottom on which the alternator pivots. >Before I start loosening, I would like to know the proper tightening process. First loosen the above-mentioned bottom pivot bolt. Put a spanner at the fron and another at the back to loosen it. Now slacken off the top two bolts. Put a piece of timber or a large screwdriver down between the alternator and the engine and lever the alternator away from the engine to tighten the belt. It is important not to over-tension the belt as it will cause the destruction of your alternator and/or water pump bearings. Whilst holding the alternator out from the engine, check by how much you can deflect the fan belt. You should be able to easily deflect it by 1/2"-3/4" I'm not sure of the figures for a Landie as the amount depends on the length of the belt but the above is a good starting point and may get you out of trouble pending a definitive reply from a Landie owner. Tighten up all bolts (don't forget the one underneath). 5. Was my stalling problem after I was stranded related to the fact that my battery was severly drained and my fan belt was slipping. Amongst other things they make up paint for HMG and will make up small amounts of any military colour on request. I've used them a couple of times to get paint to match a couple of my ex-military vehicles. I can't remember their exact prices but the paint costs something like 12 plus 6/litre (so 1 litre is 18, 2 litres 24 and so on). It's not expensive, anyhow.
