Subject: Charging problems

Hello:

I'm new to the list, and have what I hope to be a relatively basic
question. I was recently driving my Series III '109 on a 20 - 25 mile
jaunt, and when I shut down the motor, it would not restart because
the battery had drained and would not turn the motor over. A
jumpstart quickly brought the engine back to life. Driving home, the
engine would want to stall every time I came to a light or stop sign.

My charge light does work, and when I first start the vehicle (from a
jumpstart), the red light glows and pulses very slightly. After some
revving, the light goes away. The interior light is actually brighter
at low RPMs and fades upon revving. A Land Rover mechanic friend told
me to check the fan belt and low and behold it is very sloppy and very
loose. My questions are this:

1. When I look under the hood, the fan belt is driving the
alternator, despite the belt being loose. Is it really the fanbelt?
2. Now, when the motor is at idle, the interior light pulses somewhat
irradically. Is this becasue the fan belt is slipping?
3. At idle, my charge light is not on, although I know it works. Why
is it not on? If the battery is low, which I know it is, shouldn't
the light come on to indicate it is charging?
4. Can someone walk me through the fan-belt tightening process? I
have not received my workshop manual yet. I see there are three
bolts, two within easy access up top, and another down below the fan
blades. Before I start loosening, I would like to know the proper
tightening process.
5. Was my stalling problem after I was stranded related to the fact
that my battery was severly drained and my fan belt was slipping.

Thanks in advance,

Devin J. Anderson

I am looking for someone who kept their old copies of Land Rover World
beginning April 1997. I am interested in an article series and how long it
ran and could give me some info about it.

The Odyssey - Labrador and Newfoundland - April '97 p.22

I really would like copies/scans/ or anything about it.

please contact me directly.

Thanks,
Chris

Subject: Christmas Present

I have just taken delivery of my 87 90 Turbo Diesel.

I have been used to driving my 109 series III 2.25 diesel and I have to say that
there is a huge difference.

I have to congratulate Landrover for the progress done.

Any one has had similar experience.??

Also I have the above Series III for sale now. (I would like to keep both but
my financial situation restricts me to one!!) Any one interested!!!

Happy New year to all.

Thanks
Geoffrey

Subject: weak IIa clutch

Merry Christmas everyone,

Our '68 IIa 88" has had nagging clutch problems for some time. The trouble
started last winter when the hydraulics ceased functioning out in the snow.
After running through a couple of red lights we made it home in 3rd and
then managed to start it while in 1st low to make it up the drive. Anyway,
upon inspecting it, we found that the fluid was leaking out around a MC
connection and had dropped low enough to suck air in. We topped up the
fluid and got some pedal back after much bleeding. This fix lasted a month
or so, but subsequent bleeding produced no results. Not knowing much about
clutch hydraulics, we replaced the only thing we knew how to, the MC, with
a new unit from Brit-Pacific. With the new cylinder on, we bled again, this
time it took only 10-15 pedal strokes to get a firm pedal. Now, it shifts
pretty well, but the pedal's not as firm as our '67 IIa. If the '68 is
parked nose downhill, the clutch doesn't fully disengage; you can feel the
gears spinning if you slide it in to 1st, 2nd, or R; not enough to really
grind, just enough to feel. On the level or nose uphill, no problem. What
should I check now? Slave cylinder? Thanks for your guess!
