Dave, I just went to the local auto parts store and bought individual leads in the right lengths and with appropriate ends for the distributor in my Rangie i.e. some straight ends and some 90 deg bend ends. Don't worry about getting a pack made up for any particular car. The leads come in a variety of lengths (and colours). Date: Tue, 23 Dec 1997 20:46:19 -0500 (EST) From: David Scheidt <david@infocom.com> Subject: pos ground fuel sender resistance the problem with having a Land-Rover that has neither a working fuel gauge nor speedometer is that it is quite easy to forget when to put petrol in the damn thing. I have a collection slightly used fuel senders (they came with the Rover, I wouldn't do this...) one or more of which might be good. It looks as though the fuel gauge just measures the resistance of the sender and deflects appropiately. What I need to know is what the correct values are, so I can figure out which of the spare senders works. thanks, David (It is very embarassing to run out of fuel waiting to turn into the petrol station.) ------------------------------[ <- Message 12 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 971224 -> Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]
From: Allan Smith <smitha@candw.lc> Subject: Re: Various 110 TDi recommendations needed Date: Tue, 23 Dec 1997 23:12:26 -0300 On Wed, 17 Dec 1997, graham@muddy.gen.nz (Graham Furniss) wrote about being able to check timing belts: >I would add a point or two to this. The first is that being able to inspect >the back of the belt will tell you nothing about the condition of the belt. Agreed in part. It won't tell you everything, fine, but with a 300 Tdi the most likely cause of disaster is a leaking crankshaft seal, and I would have found it most usefull to be able to check whether or not the belt was contaminated without dismantling the front of the engine. The total failure of a pristine-looking belt is another issue, and one which has not affected any Td or Tdi owners here. When someone has the problem, the belt they show me is largely toothless, and I am talking about a means of checking on this. The early 300 also had a problem whereby the injection pump was not mounted at exactly 90 degrees to the housing and caused the belt to disintegrate too soon. This was a factory notification to dealers that I was fortunate to see. The resultant flying rubber dust would also be evident via a panel. >The Zeus timing gears have two advantages. They don't break suddenly, (they >will make a lot of noise before failure) and they don't stretch as they >wear, which the toothed belts do. These two facts alone make them a good >prospect. Obvously the best time to do the conversion is when the timing >belt is due for a change. At around 25 quid for a belt, how would its life over a few years decide when to go for a 500 - 700 quid ( parts or parts + fitting) alternative? A - still considering Zeus but not decided yet -S ------------------------------[ <- Message 13 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 971224 -> Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

From: "Tom Dixon" <tomd@clear.net.nz> Subject: Checkride Date: Wed, 24 Dec 1997 19:56:41 +1300 Here's a Christmas joke, hope you like it.. Subject: You thought your checkrides were tough... Santa's Checkride Santa Claus, like all pilots, gets regular visits from the Federal Aviation Administration, and it was shortly before Christmas when the FAA examiner arrived. In preparation, Santa had the elves wash the sled and bathe all the reindeer. Santa got his logbook out and made sure all his paperwork was in order. The examiner walked slowly around the sled. He checked the reindeer harnesses, the landing gear, and Rudolf's nose. He painstakingly reviewed Santa's weight and balance calculations for the sled's enormous payload. Finally, they were ready for the checkride. Santa got in, fastened his seatbelt and shoulder harness and checked the compass. Then the examiner hopped in, carrying to Santa's surprise, a shotgun. "What's that for?" asked Santa incredulously. The examiner winked and said, "I'm not supposed to tell you this, but you're gonna lose an engine on takeoff." P.S The rover content is in my signature Cheers....
