Subject: IceLand Rovers

This is not a commercial, but I have just received a brochure from IceLand
Rovers, an organization in, of all places, Iceland. This firm uses
Defenders for their original purpose: boldly going where no.....(you get
the picture)

Their one-day spin around Hvalfjordur involves wearing wet suits for a
visit to the highest waterfall in Iceland. On another one-day outing,
participants put on crampons to trudge across the ice to visit the caves of
Hallmundarhraun.

Those are the one-day outings. The three-day tour in South Iceland includes
white-water rafting on the Hvita river, a little exercise with crampons and
ice axes, and a chance to assay the results of the 1996 flood when a
volcano erupted under a glacier.

Iceland is Land Rover country, sullied by the presence of too many J**ps
and T****as in recent years. Some of the more interesting family cars are
Volvo Lapplanders, which you might see parked on the streets of the
capital.

If your spouse knits, maybe you could dump her at my wife's wool camp in
May, and organize a little off-off-off-off roading (under supervision, of
course).

The phone number for IceLand Rovers is (international access code) plus 354
for Iceland, 567 1720. I have not sampled their wares, but could be
persuaded.

Many thanks to the two guys who pointed out my poor web etiquette, i.e., using
all caps. I'd still appreciate seeing some responses to my Rover questions.
Please let me know if they need to be re-stated in upper/lower in order to be
responded to and I will do so.

If anyone is interested in an original pick that fits on the tailgate of
Military Land Rovers, Sportsman Guide is flogging them for $15....They are
sold out of the shovels unfortunately... I bought an extra pick, however
in case I can find someone out there who would trade for the shovel.

You better hurry before the stockists get wind of this as I'm sure they
will soon.. they list them for nearly $100.

John and Muddy, Does the regular rover axle use the same type of locker? I
guess a better way to ask this is to say... If I were to get a locker and
upgrade later to a Salisbury would I need to buy a new locker as well??

All,

William Maloney sent Steve and I private mail suggesting that the noise might be
the result of piston slap due to worn cylinders. I remember that the #4 piston
was indeed quite worn when I removed/refitted my head last summer. That might
just explain the source of the noise (near the rear of the engine).

I wonder if it could simply coincidence that the cylinder has become worn enough
to make the noise just as the cold weather has arrived.

The Living Daylights was on TV here on Sunday night.

Definitely a CS LR but a 110 rather than a 90. Too much rear overhang and a
Salisbury rear end. You get to see the back axle as they drive off to
dinner after leaving the plane just before it crashes. It has to be the
cleanest, most factory fresh axle I have ever seen, you can even see the
factory coloured paint stripes! Definitely NOT just driven through a wall!
The engine note is distinctly V8 as well :). They had disguised the bonet
by pop-riveting a sheet of something over the dip in the middle of the
bonnet (hood for the US readers) to make it flat too.

Also spotted at the Russian air base is a 109 without a top. That one isn't
even disguised! I guess the Russans can spot reliable hardware when they
see it ;)

Oh, BTW New Zealanders are quite fond of Bond too.

Cheers, Graham.
