Adrian:

I had identical symptoms about two years ago. After checking all other
possibilities I brought the alternator to a shop (removing it in the
parking lot and bringing it in). They concluded that it was the electron=
ic
stuff attatched to the back (regulator, diodes, gizmos, etc...) and
replaced them at no great charge. After about half a day the
dim/flickering light appeared again and again I could make it get dimmer =
or
go out with an increase of rpm. I took it back to the shop and it checke=
d
fine on the bench so I drove it for a couple more days (maybe it'll heal
itself) but the problem persisted. I went back to the shop and once agai=
n
it checked 4.0 on the bench. After insisting that this was not a problem=

with an overactive imagination and yes there was, in fact, something wron=
g
with this piece of gear I asked him to do some poking. Poking is exactly=

what he did. Much to the surprise of both of us, the portion of the
armature where the brushes rub popped right out. It was worn through and=
 I
have no idea how the alternator was working at all. They had the part
in-stock and it was fixed in about 2 hours and has performed flawlessly
ever since.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

Steve

John, you're quite right, there's still something screwy going on. I'll
sort it out tomorrow when the propellor heads get back to work. The guys at
my service provider's help desk are out of their depth. Sorry for the
inconvenience.

Hello all.

Well, as others have already suggested it's almost definitely your =
clutch master.

Have you considered the possibility that the fluid you added might not =
have
been DOT4??? -Think about it carefully now while you can still get it =
out of
the system before everything else fails.

I /just/ went through this a week and a half ago. Unfortunately I was =
down to
the Rover or nothing on Wednesday and received the wrong part on =
Thursday.
(BTW, BB was /very/ good to me after they screwed up my first order)

Snow was predicted and I was facing being stuck in the house for the =
weekend
or replacing the clutch master in the freezing cold night...

11pm: Me in fingerless gloves, wool shirts, big boots with wool socks =
and the Coleman lantern growling. I managed to get parts painted, the =
clutch master in and adjusted, the slave bled and a quick test drive =
done just as sleet started falling about 4am.

I don't know why the neighbors seem to avoid me...:)

Give this job a try in better circumstances, maybe with someone to help =
you and
it shouldn't be too bad at all.

Does everyone keep a piece or two of 2x4 in the back? Mine is just the =
perfect
length to hold down a 'pumped up' pedal while I bleed part of the =
hydraulic system.

Chris

I know this topic has been beaten to death but is anybody concerned that
people who do this may screw it up for the rest of us? I know that
someday I'd like a Series 1 or maybe a 101FC. In just a few years, 101's
will be 25 yrs old and eligible for importation. What if the Federal Gov.
decides that because people are trying to circumvent the law like this,
no more vehicles that were _not_ at one time imported into the US will be
allowed in the country, no matter how old? That would close the door on
_all_ vehicles that were not originally available in the US. Considering
the talk of eliminating older cars from the road, based purely on age, I
don't thing this is too far fetched. Any thoughts?

I hope all those celebrating Thanksgiving had a safe and happy holiday.

Cheers,

David Russell

If you're worried about this type of transaction why draw attention to it
by posting the info on this mailing list? If you love Land-Rovers, be cool.
There's probably about 2 people in the US that would go to these lengths
to get a 110 into the US. It'll probably end up costing $50,000-$60,000
to get the thing on the road after the rich guy pays somebody $50 an
hour to put it back together. I strongly feel that people should mind their
own business in these situations. Dave in Va.

I'd like to thank the following for assisting me in diagnosing my clutch
problem:
Chris Weinbeck
Alan Smith
John Dillingham
Jon "GcdoAK@aol.com
and John Cranfield

Since I already had a master and slave rebuild kit, I started at 1PM and
finished at 6:30PM ( ON THE SAME DAY!!! ).

I partially removed the left wing, and was able to get to the bottom bolt
from inside the drivers compartment. Removal and reinstallation was a lot
easier than I expected. With the assistance from my 8 yr old daughter
Kristina, we got the system bled and started buttoning the beast back
together.

Again thanks all,

Michael Johnson
