Two questions about Series I Land Rovers -

1. Has anyone replaced the old style brake (single) master cylinder with a
modern LR dual system? This would seem to be a safer system, and if the old
master cylinder needs to be replaced anyway... is this a feasible
transplant/upgrade? What problems arise?

2. Does anyone have any old copies of "The Legend" they would like to
entrust to me for a short while, so I can read more about this vehicle?
Will pay postage both ways! (Please respond directly to
<renken@foto.infi.net>).

I can't replicate the problem on my side. The page is open access (no
password protocols or restrictions). Is anyone else experiencing this
problem.

I think that there is something wrong with Mr. Sena's mail box. If you
look closely, its only one message header that he keeps replying to. :

I think that if we stop replying to this subject header, it'll stop
bouncing back to us...

On a Land Rover topic:

I just got my starter motor back from the local auto electrical shop
WOW what a difference. I basically have a new starter for under a
hundred bucks! They replaced a bunch of the bits from the gear end of
the motor which had cracked/shredded themselves, put in new brushes,
cleaned and painted it. AND THEY HAD THE PARTS IN STOCK! I was
impressed. They will get more of my business.

Keith,

Oddly, the only other person (up to now) who has trouble accessing the

They are the sides/rear...solid on the side with the standard little window

[digester: Removing section of: Content-Type: multipart/mixed; boundary="------------D44ABAB10414674C9235D113" ]

About a month ago, my red CHARGE light started glowing faintly when I
was driving - I checked the fan belt but it was tight, and the battery
condition was fine - no problem starting in the cold at all. So not
having an answer to the problem, I tried to pretend that I didn't have a
problem - as I have been busy with work, so time to get under the bonnet
has been limited.

Today I started the car after leaving it cold for a few days, it started
first turnover - no problem, but the red CHARGE light was glowing at
full power, and diminished slightly with high revs after a half hours
driving.

Then my wife used the car to move some things for the school bazaar -
and cam back saying " the red light was glowing and then the headlights
went dim and the dash light went dim and the cab light was also dim, I
stopped to see what the problem was, and the car wouldn't start again
the battery was flat, so I got a jump start "

She got home, stopped the car again, came to tell me, and by the time I
went back to it the battery was flat again, and after 15 minutes
jump-cgarging from the other working land-rover, it was still flat.

We puched it into the workshop, I've had the battery on charge all
evening, but it sounds to be bubbling and the acid level looks low.

Any ideas on an explanation - isn't there a doide bridge on the
alternator to rectify the output to the battery - if this rectifier is
not working, would that cause this problem - first a faint glow on the
charge light, then a bright glow, then a dead battery?

OPr is the problem somewhere else.

Another clue - the fuel guage and temp gauge were not working this
evening, but the fuel guage was working this afternoon. I don't see how
these are related though.

Or could this be a bad earth somewhere?

Any wise words out there looking for a home?

Subject: 2.5 cams

Someone asked about 2.5 cams.
I don't have the lift/duration stuff in front of me, but as I recall, its
primary benifits are at higher revs. The stock engine/carb/aircleaner set
up seems to be breathing pretty hard at about 3000 or so. The way my SIIA
88 is set up:

.030 or .040 overbore and matched pistons
balanced crank and equally weighted pistons
2.5 cam
Weber 32/36 DGV on a Pierce manifold w/ a K&N knock-off (gotta get a real
	one...)
exhaust headers
overdrive

All of this was done by the previous owner, and is not neccessarily set up
the way I would do it. I haven't had him on a dyno, so I don't know what
sort of power it puts out, but top speed on level ground is about P. (The
stock speedo reads to 75, and has MPH written in the space at the bottom
between 75 and 0. P is, by chase car, about 80). With a short run
downhill, you can actually peg it. This is, of course, not something I
have actually done.

I have been thinking abzout an electronic ignition. I don't know which
one to fit, though. I am currently fighting the (completly irrational!)
urge to get a dual-point Mallory dizzy. Just got to have the total
british hot-rod.

Adrian,

It sounds like you have a bad alternator or voltage regulator. First
though, you should do the cheap stuff: check connections, wires, clean the
terminals and ground point, and test the cells. Charge the battery on the
bench, and check the specific gravity of the cells. Should be 1260ish all
the way across for a fairly charged battery. If one is way low, then it
is shot. If they are okay, then put a volt meter across the battery.
When you rev the engine, the voltage should rise to 13.5. If it doesn't
the alternator (or voltage regualtor ) is faulty. If the regulator is
external to the alternator swap it out, and repeat the test.

If this doesn't point out the problem, then you may have a drain on the
battery. I would expect though that you simply have a charging problem.

Good luck.

Well, my wife took a new job, and I'm looking for good daily transport
since we can't carpool anymore. The D90 is my vehicle of choice, but
I'll have to sell my others first (unless someone wants them in
trade...) I love my IIa, but everyday commute is wearing me out.
Anyone know of a good bargain one out there? I don't care about
anything but it being a D90... for a good price. Thanks in advance.

Ardrian,
Sounds like what happened to me last winter. My SIII wipers had never
worked on low setting till one evening when my voltage regulator failed,
and was sending full power to everything. Then the alt soon failed
afterwards. I was still able to drive since I was getting plenty of spark
from the battery, but I had the red light. I was surprised how long it
could go with out the alt. We went over 7 miles without the headlights, if
I turned the lights on the engine would stall. I fitted a NipponDenzo (SP)
110amp from a '95 Dodge Caravan, and have had no problems for the last
year. Also I didn't even kill the battery. The bigger the better I guess.

You are probably right about the Diodes. There is a set of three pairs
and if one goes it will reduce the out put by a third and the charge
light takes higher rmp to turn it out. As more diodes go it just gets
worse. The Good News is the Lucas rectifier (the set of diodes) is very
inexpensive and not hard to replace. It is however inside the alternator.

There are two "sources"
On line there's the "Mendo-Recce" mailing list which emphasizes west coast
activities. There are a large number of activities informal "not organized"
through
the list. E-mail Ben Smith (bens@psa.pencom.com) and ask to be subscribed.

The other is the Northern California Rover Club which is becoming reasonably

active (newsletter, meetings and activities from the Sierra to the coast).
Send me
your address and I'll send you and information/application form ($20/yr).

cheers,

Jeremy

Con, that makes it 3 for 3 with the country extension .ca

Any ideas?

Exactly the same symtems I had with mine a couple of years ago. A mate
reckoned it was the alternator diode/diodes so I changed the the complete
alternator with a second-hand one from a scrap yard. Its been fine since.I
had a look in the busted one, sure enough two of the diodes were cracked.
