Yes, it can, but there's a better way.

Buy one more set of points and put them in, properly timed and set.

Next, take the baseplate from a scrap distributor and install the Pertronix
unit on it.

Swap the two, being careful not to disturb the point setting, and bag the
old plate with some dessicant.

Time the engine with the Pertronix, and off you go.

Now, should the little electronic thingy fail you can pull two screws,
remove the plate and the magnetic ring and swap the points back in. I've
been forced to use this setup when my Crane ignition failed - 10 minutes
and I was on my way corectly timed and running fine.

Subject: Re: LROi Nov & Dec

I don't normally respond to mail like this but in this instance I
feel it warrants some comment. Safari Gard are a young and growing
company in a market where very few dedicated after market companies
exist. Recognition in a magazine such as LROI serves two purposes.
It helps the company by making their presence known and it provides
readers with information on different products. I assume by the
tone of the comments that Mike has personal experience of Safari Gard
products and has had an unfortunate experience. All companies have
problems from time to time and I see, and receive, complaints about
the best of them. We have certainly devoted some time and space to
Safari Gard but read on and you will see other companies being
featured as well in upcoming editions. ARB are indeed mentioned and
will continue to be mentioned as they work with us on this project.

Enough said I think. I try to put a positive spin on this as we
continue to maintain a serious North American presence in the
magazine (and keep subscription rates down).

Hey all,

Thanks to Con, Nate, Sandy, Graham, Russ, Paul, John and Richard (and
anyone else I may have forgotten). The new half shaft is in, and just in
time for a field test to Nate's for Thanksgiving Dinner. The process was
much smoother than expected: I drained the diff; disconnected the
propshaft; pulled both shafts (right one was broken); unbolted and removed
the diff (heavy, but manageable); put the diff on the workbench; and worked
a long, thin screwdriver past the pinion spindle and gave it a sharp tap.
The piece of half shaft came right out! Disassembly and reassembly was a
breeze compared to some of the other work I've done on the Rover. Once
again, I couldn't have done it without the help from this list. Thanks
again to all.

One caveat regarding the breaker plate method; The pertronix is timed
differently. Justswapping out the breaker plates won't do. Maybe for a crane
unit, but not an Ignitor. Just swapping back will result in a seriously
retarded distributor, which *will* burn pistons and score cylinders within
ten or fifteen miles.

From: Faye and Peter Ogilvie <ogilvi@hgea.org>
Subject: Re: church hill tools

Doubt if you would get any more speed than the gear ratio you have now
with your current setup (4.71 and overdrive). My petrol will take only
slight hills in fifth o/d without a downshift. If your thought is to do
away with the o/d, you might consider lower gearing but that will affect
the four wheel capabilities.
Think long and hard and about a lower rear end. Lower rpm without a
concurrent increase in horse power will just mean cruising in 4th not 4th
o/d or maybe even 3rd o/d. Of course you could fly down hill if you could
find one long and steep enough to get the speed up above 70 mph.
Someone makes a transmission conversion, I believe, that grafts the IIa
transfer box onto a later model transmission with higher gearing. I don't
see much advantage in that, unless you don't have an o/d fitted and/or need
the power take off for something else.
Another possibility might be 33/9.50/15 tires as they may be larger
diameter than your 7.50/16's. You could also go to 265/16's which have a
larger diameter and thus a lower effective gear ratio. The problem with
both of those is the drag of pushing the fatter tire with the anemic four.
If noise is your complaint, insulation would be cheaper and probably more
effective as well. I wonder about the insulation trapping water, however,
as IIa's are anything but water tight.

While the intention is no doubt good, the net effect of binary postings is
to cause hassles for a lot of people. If you have large images, or
screensavers, or anything else of that nature, no matter how cute you may
think that they are, and no matter how much you may think that the rest of
the world may want them, *PLEASE* don't just mail them off to the list.

Either put them on a web/ftp site, or mail them to those people who want
them. I am sure that I am not the only person who gets frustrated at
having machines clogged up and Internet bills rising for something that is
totally useless to me.

Sorry if this sounds heated, but between binaries and our dear friend a
Saco foods, I am getting very pissed off.

STOP SENDING UNSOLICITED screen savers, desktops, etc!! Twice now I have
had to call my service provider and tell him to delete Land Rover messages,
because my poor modem and computer and service provider get hung up on them.

If you are so very proud of these images, I think we'd all prefer reading a
two-line description of them, plus details of the site where we can go IF WE
SO CHOOSE to include them in our lives.

Sorry for the flame, to those who don't deserve it.

When replacing - put on a locking nytm this will stop you tightening the

I mean what if he has got hold of one of those rare Land Rover computers,
rumour has it that they will operate in upto 30in depths of coffee - quick
check his desk for a puddle of 90wt.

As much as I don't enjoy the spamming from his auto reply, I think you
would find that something in those particular messages are triggering the
wrong email filter (i.e. something in the header of those emails means that
the message goes to his work inbox rather than his landrover inbox).

Poor dude probably going to come back after his holiday only to find that

Subject: Re: LR Lawsuit
Date: Thu, 27 Nov 97 21:07:47 -0000
From: Brent Flanders <brent@pharmconsult.com>

I am having email problems, therefore I do not know whether this has =
been received yet or not. If you have read this I apologize for the =
excess.

Although I am getting in this discussion late, I would agree with =
RoverNut@aol.com and heartily disagree with wheelman@shore.net. When =
the company states as Rovernut does below "second to none" I expect =
that, or at least to be comparable to my JEEP Grand Cherokee which =
was awesome.

>My point, and it can be construed no other way, is that when an expensive
>part which is built for longevity purposes (ie, not the water pump) fails =
at
>the 50k, even 90k mark on a vehicle which was expensive and marketed as
>second to none, then it is the company's responsibility to make it right.
>> RoverNut@aol.com

Anyway, I have owned a Grand Cherokee and now 2 Disco's (The 96 SE 7 =
sieve listed below and a replacement 97 SE 7).

My comment, which you may view as noteworthy or not, is that the =
Grand Cherokee which I owned for 3 years was virtually trouble free, =
a great 4 x 4. We do limited off roading, mostly in and around Vail =
and Summit county in Colorado.

The first Disco (96 SE7) was a major pain in the ass. I had more =
leaks, failures and minor annoyances with this vehicle than I had =
with all other vehicles I have ever owned added together. Even =
though some are minor annoyances, admitted, it is my goal in life to =
pay for the best when possible and to receive the best.

The following is a log (later in email) of the troubles I documented =
for LR; not to mention the following letter I sent to LR:

Dear President:
Why am I sending this letter to you?
Because of my extreme disappointment with the total vehicle =
experience we have endured thus far.

My Experience
After committing to purchase our vehicle, we were loaned a vehicle =
for about a week until our new Discovery arrived, a very pleasant =
beginning in the purchase of our new SUV. After waiting a week for =
the vehicle, we were notified that they had located our model/color =
at a dealership in Minnesota. Our dealer, xxx, notified us that the =
vehicle would be ready to pick up and made an appointment for us to =
come in.

Upon arrival we first previewed the car as they were detailing it. =
Immediately it was obvious that this car was used as a demo at the =
previous dealership; carpet, seats, ceiling, dash, and other interior =
areas were fairly dirty and had spots everywhere. Although we were =
not the least bit excited about this we allowed them to continue to =
clean it and proceeded with the purchase of this vehicle. After =
about two hours of further cleaning and detailing by xxx the vehicle =
was ready to take home.

Although at this point we were extremely disappointed with the first =
couple hours of the =B3Land Rover=B2 experience, we decided to put it =
behind us and move on with our new vehicle.

After a few days several issues began to crop up:
Transmission leak
Misfitting major interior trim pieces (left interior sail panel and =
another larger rear cargo panel)
Hose on power steering reservoir leaking
Rear cargo cover torn
Steering column bezel broken and falling apart loose on bottom of =
steering column (occurred upon leaving dealership)
Both front fog light adjusters broken
Steering wheel not aligned horizontally (level) with road
Rain leaking in around driver door window
Rattle in rear door
Rear window wiper did not work intermittently
Hood vibrating when driving in wind

Again, thoughts of what several people (in person and via the =
internet) had said about the Discovery came to mind, =B3still several =
quality control issues remain with this vehicle=B2 and =B3I know a =
person who bought one and would never buy another=B2 and =B3purchase =
another Jeep Grand Cherokee, you won=B9t be disappointed=B2 and many =
more. Upon taking possession of a new nearly $40,000 vehicle I do =
not expect to experience failure and or poor quality on any parts of =
a new car. Sure, one or two minor issues can be overlooked, but look =
at the above list.

The reason I have decided to write this is that we just got back from =
vacation last night and I have a new puddle of transmission fluid on =
my garage floor beneath my Discovery. I suppose when I call xxx for =
another service appointment tomorrow regarding the transmission leak =
(this is the 3rd time), I think I will go ahead and have them fix:

Another rear interior trim piece needs replaced (bad seam from =
factory)
Vent not working in the back seat
Steering wheel still not level (3rd or 4th try to make level)
CD changer door that doesn=B9t fit properly

I delivered the vehicle for the above items to xxx. After leaving it =
overnight, I picked up the vehicle the next afternoon. To my dismay =
the only issue resolved was the steering wheel finally being leveled, =
the remaining items all had to be ordered and be repaired in the =
future. In addition, the dealership was kind enough to wash my =
Discovery, but used a dirty towel to dry it and imparted several =
scratches to my SUV. Yes, you could say that I am fairly tired of =
the continuing issues with this vehicle. I am also concerned about =
driving my vehicle with this transmission leak, although it is a =
small leak, it really does concern me to drive it while I wait on the =
parts to resolve the leak.

At this point, quite honestly, I would rather have back my down =
payment, closing costs (payments), taxes and license registration and =
go purchase another Grand Cherokee. Then in the next year or so =
maybe you can address the obvious quality control issues with this =
vehicle and lure me back to purchase another Discovery or Range Rover.

When I was called about a month after purchasing the vehicle I did =
tell the Land Rover representative on the phone about many of the =
above issues -- I never did receive a response. Although some of =
what I list above may seem small, I believe the market theme that you =
profess is Land Rover (above all) is an exceptional vehicle built =
upon the standards set of a European Luxury Product. Being a small =
business owner for over 10 years I understand the importance of a =
quality experience and the value of referrals that it brings -- with =
this experience I don=B9t know what to say when someone asks for an =
opinion of this vehicle (we just got a lemon?).

Should you feel as though there is some form of remuneration =
available please either call xxx or email: brent@pharmconsult.com

I will be waiting for your response.

Sincerely Disappointed

  What type of '89 Rover?

If it's a Range Rover the transfer gear lever rotates counter clockwise
and spins off. The auto selector is removed by popping/prying off the top
cap of the shifter selector, removing the circlip and detent selector, and
unscrewing the retaining nut holding the shifter body to the shaft. Sounds
weird, but is all readily apparent at each step.

David Cooper who is a vet for the Natal Parks Service. They were

territory...I started to dream of safari-ing in Southern Africa. One
sad point though... In the show they using Isuzu & Nissan pick-ups!!!
Not a single Landy to be seen! 8:(

Adrian,

If you could send the images and desktop to me directly that would
probably stop the formatting errors and allow me to enjoy them, rather
than a text representation of them. Could you find the time to have
another go but send it to anpi@norsk-data.co.uk instead please? I'll
understand if you don't because its probably a large amount of files and
thus a long time on line to send it!

Thanks,

Andy.

Hi Guys,

I will make storage space available on my server for anyone who wants to
post images, screensavers, win95 themes, sound files, etc for the L-R list.

The web address is http://Adventures.co.za/landy/doodads (no html page
needed, this will give you a text list of the contents along with size of
the files and a link to download them - just open the link then use "save
as").

If everyone would just post their submissions to me at
"paul@adventures.co.za" with "doodads" in the subject field, I'll have the
"art" up as soon as possible.

Hope this helps.
