Silicone Brake Fluid doesn't absorb water and also is heavier than water
so any that does somehow find its way into the brake system. (Sucked in
while wading?) will migrate to the master cylinder reservior where it
can be removed by soaking up with a tissue.

There are no variations of the magazine. Every country in the world
receives the same copy. Most copies of the November issue were sent
although a little late. About 350 copies destined for US
destinations were not shipped and the mailing house failed to tell
anyone. We know who did not get a copy and these are in the process
of being replaced and once again we apologise for the inconvenience.

Does anyone out there have experience of fitting a combination of a Detroit
Locker at the back and a Detroit Truetrac at the front in a Series III SWB
Diesel? The vehicle will be used both on (2WD) and off road (4WD) and g\has
free wheeling hubs at the front.

Any experience notes would be much appreciated.

pulling that little lever next to the key on the steering column usually
reduced the smoke from an SIII diesel quite effectivly.

:)

Adjust your tappets - this can really help. Check the pump timing too.
These areb the inexpensive solutions which correct 80% of the problem if
they were out of alignment to start with.

It could be a head gasket - that is inexpensive, but time consuming to
change. Checking the injectors is also worthwhile. Last post before
reaching for the wallet is checking the timing chain, cam-rollers and
guides and the cam itself.

After that - we're talking spending money - noone changes piston rings
without at least considering a re-bore, and a general service, which
besides the above items, can also run to bearings and a few gaskets, and
a truck off the road for a few days.

Then of course there is the little knob on the steering column...

Good luck - let's hope it doesn't "hurt"

If you have your own 4X4 you can hire a guide for $10/hr. I spent 10 hours
in just one canyon & thought I was rushing it. There is a $50 fee for
overnighting. But the guide brings in he firewood & I believe drinking
water before hand & tends to the fire. Near as I can tell the guide is

Subject: Re: RE: Frosting Weber carbs
Date: Mon, 24 Nov 97 09:39:35 -0600
From: asanna <asanna@sacofoods.com>

The heat riser for the Weber is a little hard to describe since I don't
have the truck in front of me. A few years ago I past my trusty IIa on
to my son (bought it new in '70) who has it out in Eugene Oregon. On the
January trip out the Weber had some frosting problems (not in -13 Montana
as you'd expect, but as we came down the Columbia Gorge into the
warmer/wetter Portland weather). I left 'ol Lulubelle and the frosty
Weber with Portland's resident Rover genius, Doug Shipman (Ship's
Mechanical, 12755 NE Whitaker Way, Portland 97230, 503-252-5566) who
fabricated this clever heat riser that solved the problem.

You see... The stock LR intake/exhaust manifold set-up has it's own
pre-heating set up. The manifolds join just under the carb to transfer
heat up from the exhaust. A boxy connection in the casting and the heat
sheild help the heat transfer. But years ago I installed some A-B
headers that eliminated this connection. What Ship did was to tap a hole
in the exhaust header pipe (I'm working from memory here) and run a small
connection up to the intake manifold/carb (here's where my memory gets
real fuzzy). I can't really remember how the connection was made at the
carb.. But it worked.

I'd call Ship. He could tell you. He's a very nice guy and has solved a
lot of problems over the phone for me. Good luck. Wish I could be of
more help.

Does the Koenig work?

How about $100 and a pile of old LR odds & ends? Nothing specific, just
a big box of stuff thats collected over the last 27 years (gaskets, turn
signals, headlamps, grease guns, door latches, rear seat frame, tow
balls, jerry cans, lots of nuts & bolts, etc.). I'd really have to check
to see what's in there.

Regarding http://www.ExtremeTerrain.com/rover/html/scrapbook.html

Thanks for the pointer to "RoverWorld" Pat. I'm *so happy* that they think
it's okay to take my text and photo and use them in a commercial venture.
He doesn't even have the courtesy to directly credit me as the author,
Harry Alexander III as the photographer or to link to the page that it's
all ripped off from:
http://www.off-road.com/RoverWeb/Jeff-Rover/JeffsRover.html

This was my first WWW article. I didn't bother to indiciate Copyright on
the pages themselves--though under U.S. law, Copyright is implicit upon
creation--as I figured the text wasn't worth stealing. The "story" here is
really just a series of photo captions. I did put a copyright notice on
each of the indvidual photos--at least those that I had taken. The photo
that was used by Mr. Yu/Extreme Terrain was shot by Harry Alexander using
my camera. Rather than "copyright" it for him I just indicated that he'd
taken the photo. Now days I'm a little smarter and copyright notice appears
on the bottom of each page I produce. I will now go back and attach
appropriate notice to these pages.

I think that I have always been extremely generous with my work--allowing
it to be published in club and parts suppliers' newsletters without
compensation--all I ask is that they ask permission and credit me
appropriately. I have also happily granted several enthusiasts WWW sites
license to use my photos. But this is just plain slimey and doesn't leave
me with a warm fuzzy feeling regarding Extreme Terrain's business practices.

Whether the use of my work is legal (under fair use doctrine or because I
foolishly didn't attach notice of copyright) or not, it irks me that they'd
use it without seeking permission--particularly without a credit or link to
the original body of work. Furthermore, I think that there's an unspoken
implication that I have some relationship with his company --"Family
Scrapbook"--as a client. Read it here now--I don't endorse this company and
I'm not planning on doing any business with them in the future--other than
to send a letter requesting that he remove my image and words from his WWW
site... (Gee, I don't think I ever signed a model release either.)

Anyhow, I've left things with my "attorney". (I think he's Samoan or
something.) Who knows, maybe there will be Official Land-Rover Picnic sets
underneath all of our trees this Christmas.

All joking aside, I ask for your support in not patronizing a company who
thinks it's okay to use other people's work without permission and/or
appropriate compensation.

Regards, RoverOn.

Thanks to everyone who has helped with my previous queries being a bit =

What about this one - when starting with the choke/cold start pulled out =
my 66 IIa Petrol will run happily for about a minute or so, and then at =
idle it gets progressively rougher until it stalls. What it seems to be =
is that the cold start is pulled out too far, but however I have it set =
it either idles rough (with a bit of black smoke from the exhaust) or =
stalls. While actually driving I tend to push the cold start in and it =
drives normally, and this problem goes once the it has warmed up anyway. =
Any ideas? (PS its a Weber Carb fitted)

I might sell three of them at my cost BUT, I really think that depends
on credit card bills ; )

I can get you all you want at $25 apiece, they have them at a surplus
store near me, i think he bought them from some catalog because they
have catalog stock # stickers on them.

they are the same swiss ones, id get them and let whoever wants them
have them for whatever it would cost me to buy them and ship them, but
that would add up and I don't think it would be cost effective at $25
+7% NYS sales tax + shipping

then again he may sell mail order too because he's affiliated with
adirondack army dodge truck parts and sells powerwagon stuff all over
the US...

I'll post his # anyway when I get it

By the way I'm on break for a week so after 2:00 this afternoon if
anyone wants to get ahold of me(for whatever reason) I won't be checking
email till a week from monday.

adios

Sure, I have one new one left that I am keeping for a pattern......
I can draw up the pattern on CadKey if you can digest the file...
the inboard end is held on with a hose clamp, the outboard ends use a
metal retaining plate that resembles the SB seal retainer, easy enough to
fabricate. I could also provide a scale drawing hardcopy for an SASE.

Subject: Updated Website / November Newsletter

Hi all

Just to inform you that the KwaZulu-Natal Club website has been
updated. New are a list of local LR agents as well as a countrywide
list of service suppliers. Sorry about the delay, I was trying to
port a Publisher 97 web to a FrontPage 97 web. You would think that
two Microsoft 97 products would talk the same language, nah!

So this is merely an update, fresh new faces in 98.

The November newsletter has also been put on, get there from the club
page.

Enjoy

Jean

I think I started the sticker discussion with a comment (referring to

Strange how items sometimes evolve.

Hi Dave,
I would advise you not to sell what is clearly a member of your family.
Instead you have the chance to meet some of the other great people who
love thier Land Rovers. You never know your younger family members
maybe dreaming about you passing it down to them.(children are like
that).
If you do sell it you will miss it more then you know & will surely
regret & miss it.

Hi Dave,

I'll second that. We sold our SI diesel conversion (hacked about and VERY
well used, 6 (at least) different colours, leaked like a sive, draughty,
noisy...) when our daughter was born. Bought a '72 Rangie instead, bigger,
quieter, newer, all the same colour, more comfortable, (marginally) better
off-road, etc., etc... BUT I MISS that SI so bad it hurts sometimes. We did
some awsome trips in it and now all we have is memories and some photos. At
least ask your kids before you sell it. You may be suprised at the depth of
attachment they have formed!

Cheers, Graham.
