Subject: Silly Seat Belt Question

Last weekend I changed the seatbelt in Baby (First $20,000 takes it!) from
the ill-fitting 1969 IIA original belt and buckle to a more lengthy and
efficient version from a Dodge Dart. The belt webbing is identical, but the
buckles are much nicer, and the belts are longer. First, unbolt the
original inboard belt U-bolt from the tub and replace the belt with a
buckle-end belt from the inboard front seat connection of the donor car.
(The Dart belt had a strong steel fitting that bolted to the floor.) Then
unbolt the upper anchor of the outboard belt, flatten the end, and slide on
the steel-plate male fitting from the donor. I left the original Land Rover
plate in place. The next problem is the little hook on the roof that the
outboard belt hangs from.

Hi
My 90 has the same problem. Sometimes the passanger seat belt locks in
place and I can't get anymore free belt from the inertial reels. The
only thing that I do is to slam the passanger door shut real hard this
seems to free them.

I presume that the ball bearings used to lock the belt in position
become stuck and the sudden shock frees them.

It's only a suggestion.

Hi everyone...

Well winter is finally here in the "Great White North" :( My 88 has
developed a carb frosting problem with the colder weather. After starting
the beast (2.25 with Solex) the base of the carb starts turning white and it
runs real bad!!!! I was wondering if this is a common thing with Series
vehicles? It seems like this is the first winter that this has started
happening, eventhough I have never driven it in the winter before I did
start it often in the cold weather in the past and didn't have this problem.
Could it even be the weather being damp or something?

Thanks

Sounds to me like the carb is icing up: the white is frost, and is
symptomatic of ice in throat of the carb..

Matt,

I don't have the exact number...But look into Rancho RS5000's. You can get
them for around $30.00 each and it's well worth the little extra cost for
the Lifetime Warrenty. I've had my four for three years. In the first year
I had weak sprins which played havok on one of the shocks...I returned it
and got a replacement for free...Well worth the extra cost !

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on what sort of Alternator could
be used to replace the generator on 67 IIA 2.6 NADA. Preferably with a
minimum of fabrication of mounting plates, etc.

Given the lack of water pump parts for that model, is it possible to
replace the stock pump and fan with electric versions? Just in case it
gives up the ghost.

Thanks

Keith does your 61 have a heat riser valve on the exhaust manifold?
This is a little Lever with a spring coil that sticks out below where
the intake and exhaust manifold join. If so it may well be stuck. the
perpose of this valeve is to allow heat from the exhaust to warm the
intake . Later vehicles didn't use this method they had a "hot spot"
that didn't need a valve.
Another cause of carb icing is exessive blow by resulting in oil fumes
and water vapour being pulled into the carb through the crankcase
ventilation system. To test for this try disconecting the small hose the
connects the PVC to the air intake. My nephew had a really horrible
drive from Maine to Nova Scotia last winter until we figured out what
was happening. His Rover now has new rings!

Fellow Rover Owners
Is there an easy way to know where the spark plug wire from the cap
goes to the proper spark plug?
Also in tuning a Rover(timing and setting the RPM's and mixcture) is it
acceptable to do by sound or do you really need a light and RPM meter?

4, 6 or 8 cylinder?
For the 4-cylinder engines, the distributor should be positioned so that
the four connections are square with the engine block.

The no. 1 point is the one nearest the block, towards the front of the
engine (ie, it points towards no.1 cylinder)

The order is 1-3-4-2, going anti-clockwise round the distributor (as seen
from above)

It depends on how exact you need the timing to be... Peter E. does it by
ear (or using a glass of water to see engine-shake..)

Strobes and things are only used to set the rpm rate.

"I wonder if their ability to compete with other places will drive their
prices down?"

I SERIOUSLY doubt it!

As much as I like the guys at BP, even they try to charge nearly $500.00 for
a 2nd speed maingear, that you can buy in England for $50.00!

Come on, when you ship a 40 ft. container of parts into the country 4-6 times
a year, how can anybody justify this? It doesn't cost that much to do it -
the Customs duty isn't very high, the brokers' fees aren't very high, the
shipping charges are usually a flat fee for an ocean container, as are the
truckers' charges for delivery - so what's the deal? Are they trying to pay
for the entire shipment by selling just a couple of parts? If it's simply a
shortage of cash, then the parts shouldn't be ordered in the first place!

I haven't bought parts from AB, or RN, simply because I've known the guys at
BP for at least 6 years, and because they're only 35 miles from me, BUT -
when it comes to getting a part that they want lots of money for, I'll get it
from England instead - simple economics. As much as Lawrence agrees with me,
it isn't his business, so he can't really do much for me price-wise.

My personal theory on the prices (especially some price increases in recent
years), is due to the fact that Land Rover decided to make a comeback here -
thus all parts prices are based on what THEY (meaning the U.S. dealers) would
sell them for in this market - but still, there are things that I can buy at
a dealer for less.

the nicest Jerricans I've yet seen, they are online somewhere or I can
email people with the phone #...

Matt,

Please post the Phone #, I've been looking and can't seem to find

remember if you are a new customer you get it shipped free, at least
according to the latest catalog I just got(last fri)
 they are like 14.96

I'll post the item # wed. but they should be able to help you out if you
call and tell them that you want the swiss military jerricans from their
latest catalog, they have other cool stuff too, lots of tools etc.

the swiss cans are the nicest BY FAR of all the european cans. I'd buy a
bunch, if you gert them shipped free you could sell some for 20$ at a
swap meet or something and make back the cost of your cans...
By the way I've seen russian, ww2 german, east german and british gas
cans of this type and the Swiss ones are the nicest looking, best built
etc. Nice and germanic with attention to detail and quality.

hope you get lot while they are available, sure beats $48 from rovers
north!!!

Guys,

Just tried, twice actually, and you MUST have the stupid product/item
#, they were unable to find it in their catalog. The closest they could
find was a "Jeep Gas Can", but no mention of Swiss Mil Surplus Cans could
be found. Is this "J**p Gas Can" the right one or what? Best would be to get
  the item #.

Yes their operators are USELESS for finding stuff, they told me to call
customer service but I never did (they couldn't find another thing that
I wanted)
I wouldn't get the jeep cans,I don't think they are the same thing, the
catalog distinctly said Swiss Milatary 5 gal. jerricans...

customer service might be more helpful than the order operators.
I can get the # but it will have to wait till wednesday because Its at
home and I can't get it till then, if anyone is in a hurry maybe someone
else out there has the catalog with them????

I will readily concede Chuck's command of the English language. The catalog is
written on par with the J. Peters catalog (which I get in order to read, and
never purchase a thing!).

As far as "what the market will bare", you also have a point. I really
shouldn't blame BNW for RN, AB, BB, DAP, and BP's (did I forget anyone?) lack of
advertizing in places that will reach the non-wired LRO.

My big beef is that my stepfather actually sold his IIA for $2000 when he tired
of paying chuck the outrageous prices he charges for spares. BNW was the only
establishment that he could find for parts. I think much of their customer base
is in this situation, because RN is significantly cheaper for genuine parts (in
fact, isn't RN the *only* authorized series parts distributor in the U.S?).

Anyway, here on the west coast we revile BNW for their prices and the BS they
pass off as information in all their literature. They have really sordid
tactics. For example, they appear to be the only source of elephant hide in the
world, and will only sell it to you if you agree to have your seats rebuilt by
them for a total charge of in excess of $300US per seat.

I sincerely hope that the ascendance of the other parts suppliers in the US has
put the hurt on BNW, and that their pricess will fall correspondingly.

I am the proud (?) owner of a electrically perfect but mechanically

I'd be happy to pay postage - not the whole genny minid, just the front

laminated bit. Of course the middle contains an axle and rotor with a

don't need that either.

I have just swapped my "spare" (from the winter project car) onto my 109

has been discontinued, evidently a limited to stock on hand type thing, and
they don't expect to be getting any more, so I couldn't even put some on back

yeah dampness doesn'tt help. Usually goes away when the engine's fully warmed
up. My Weber does it too, particularly when its in the low 30's (f) and wet or
raining. As sson as the engine stalls from the icing, the ice melts and you can
fire it back up. I think setting the mixture a little richer should help, or
moving the connector rod for the throttle shaft to accelerator pump over a
notch. So far I just use the hand throttle to hold the idle up a little higher
until the heat from the exhaust manifold warms up the lower carb body. Can't
imagine what it'd be like if I had one a them there Pierce manifolds...
Is your choke working properly?

Dunsford is rumored to have elephant hide for the worthy. When I

Dear Doug,

AC Delco has an alternator that is 55 amp that works well. For a great
mounting system cal: Frank @ 719-473-6288. He has designed one that is
realy nice and fits better than the factory upgrade kit.

Yours,
K. John Wood

First off, mud's conductive - it's probably better than the wiring in the
car.....8*)

More to the point (and seriously), I'll lay odds you've got water in the
high-tension tower of the coil and the distributor cap. Pull the wires, cap
and rotor and give it all a good dry and polish with a clean cloth and
reinstall - odds on that'll take care of your problem.

FWIW M/Benz in their older models had a nifty air cleaner housing
with a thermostatically controlled flap that sucked warm air from
around the exhaust manifold into the a/cleaner & thus into the carb
to prevent carb. icing. Once the engine had warmed up and the carb.
body had heated up above the dewpoint, the flap would close and cold
air would be drawn into the carb.. Similar problems occur with aero
engines, all of which have a manual carb. heat control. perhaps this
requires further examination (the M/Benz method)

I have one them there Pierce manifolds, and haven't had any icing
problems. It runs like crap until the choke comes off, though.

Does anyone know what the differences are between a rover 3.5 and a Buick
215c.i. engine are, specifically would a rover flywheel, clutch, tranny
and motor mounts bolt up to the buick engine ? are there any problems
inherent in the old buick motors ? any help or comments would be greatly
appreciated, Thanks, Allan J.

Has anyone made his series vehicle water proof. Water seems to be entering near
the hinge that supports the wind screen.
