Subject: Late IIA Ign. Switch

I am not sure how different the later SIIA ignition switches are, but when
the one in my old '71 SIIA went south I got a new replacement from Victoria
British, actually the switch for '62-67 MGB (among many others). The switch
in the last MG catalog that I have from them sells for $15.35 and another
$8.20 for the key and cylinder. These were OEM (Lucas) parts. I think the
switch even came with the chrome bezel, but dont hold me to that. Might help
somebody.. Cheers. Andy Blackley

The 'condensers' are for radio noise suppression. Removing them won't affect
wiper performance, or the lack thereof. If you have a modern radio, it may
not need suppression from the wiper circuit, but what's the point? Can't hear
it anyway, probably.

I was visitor 1530. Either the BNW site holds the record for the longest
time before being mentioned on the LRO list, or it has gotten a lot of
traffic quickly. No parts prices listed, and only two examples of
vehicles for sale. From their web page, commentary on a 1963 88 SW as an
example of the vehicles available (offered at $21,850):

"It is becoming increasingly difficult to find original older
Land-Rovers in good mechanical and cosmetic
condition. This is one of the nicest I have offered for sale for a
number of years, especially given that it is the now-hard-to-find Short
Wheelbase Safari Station Wagon."

I thought 88 SWs were the most common LR in the US.

Exclusive literature listed and prices:
Catalog $6 (I've bought a few small SII specific parts which were not
worth ordering directly from England. The service was good)
List of vehicles available $10
Prospective Owner's Guide $60
New Owner's Guide $60
IMHO a prospective/new LR owner should skip the BNW guides, get RN, BP
and AB catalogs and buy a shop manual or the Porter book on "restoring"
a Series LR.

Regards,
David Cockey

Probably a lot. I just checked it out. Its a very well done site with a
lot of advertising savy built in. If I didn't know what series cars go for
& had the $$ I might go for it. Or if I had lots of $$$ & was looking for
a very good condition near original car...

His parts are high but the restorations that I have seen looked first rate
to me. I think he will sell cars from that site. Check out the photo
gallery. There's some nice car pictures there.

Hi All,
Well the 2.25 engine with 8-1 compression seems to like the jet size 48
However the 7-1 seem to favor a 46 jet. At this piont this conversion
has been so successful that I will rebuild the stock engine instead of
converting to a V8 or V6 engine which seem to be the only way to add
power before this.
I am finding it hard to find the jets to reduce the 46 jet more or to
attempt to reduce the jet size one either car in use. The NAPA store
near me as well as other auto parts stores don't carry jets for Carbs.

offers in my direction...
Charging $10 just for a list of the vehicles that they have for sale??

Subject: Day of Atonement

G'day all

My friend Tom Tollefson and I spent four most excellent days last
weekend camping and bush crashing up near Calabogie Ontario. Tom was in
his 101 and I had my 88. The trails were muddy, the days warm and the
nights around freezing. What more could you ask for?

On the fourth day, we thought we would head down to the Picton area on
the shores of lake Ontario. It was on the way home and we hadn't been in
a few years so we thought we would check it out, knowing full well we
were likely to get a little wet.

Unfortunately the water level in the lake was way down. I say
unfortunately because that just meant we would be able to drive out into
the lake further than would be socially acceptable. We had too much fun
frolicking in the waves, bouncing off rocks and then spending our last
night camping on the beach. But as is always the case, it was all to
soon time to head home.

I knew there was about zero chance that no water had gotten into the
swivels or axles but due to a very busy week I was unable to give them
the attention they deserved. Naturally the temperature dropped good
style during the week and we had a big dump of snow Friday.

That brings us to today, Sunday. Temp. at -4C and windy. I'm laying in
the snow trying to drain a frozen gear oil/water concoction from the
swivel balls. Nothing wants to come out and this is after a 20 minute
drive to try and get things warmed up. Great. Out with the propane torch
and after half an hour of warming I seem to have most of the crap out
of one swivel. Same problem on the other side but I seem to have caught
a break with the front axle. Still lots of water but the drain hole is
large enough that the slush is able to ooze out. Move to the rear axle
and what's this? NO WATER! Well, at least one raised axle breather
works.

Next I check the gear and transfer boxes but they are fine. Things a
looking up. Last but not least is the air filter and sure enough it to
is full of goop. Actually, frozen goop. Some day I will learn to stay
out of the water..., I hope.

Has anybody else ever noticed that the colour of that oil and water
mixture you sometimes find in your running gear is awfully close to
limestone?

With all the dirty work out of the way, it was time to get down to the
depressing bussiness of removing the canvas and sticking on the hard
top. This job is never as enjoyable as doing the reverse in the spring,
but winter seems to have arrived, so...

Ya just got to love living in the Great White North eh.

Rover and out

Brett

I usually find that the pumps give out at ~100 litres, though the garage may
have a single transaction limit of GBP 50. The silly thing is they'll do it with
two payments from the same credit card, so no more security of payment and more
hassle for checkout or customer. For these reasons, I've only bothered to fill
all 125 litres of tankage on the 110 once or twice.

Yes, I've dealt with LR Fasteners before. hey appear to be mail order only,
although I see someone has met them at the ARC.

Yes, he definitely knows his stuff.
I find him a bit pricey, but he does supply Genuine Parts (hence the cost I
believe). Also, in my experience, if its listed in a Parts Book, he can get
it - unlike some places which don't stock obscure circlips, etc, etc.

Contact Musician's Friend at (800) 776-5173. They have a large
selection and the prices are very reasonable, especially when they're
running a sale.
Rover stuff: A friend at work had to return to the UK to get his
visa squared away, so I gave him a list of SI parts that I needed for
my restoration. Anyway, he just faxed me a list of items from a
place called LR Fasteners (A. & B. Arnold). Has anyone dealt with these
folks before? Sorry, but I don't know where they're located as an
address wasn't listed on the fax.

The speedo drive cog, is on the rear output of the transfer case. Ie. if
the transfer case is dead, it wouldn't turn.

Therefore, the problem is further down the line - diff or halfshaft me
thinks.

In my case, after being laid up for a while, the propshaft mysteriously
acquired dud UJs... (bad vibration above about 30mph)

Subject: Silly Seat Belt Question

I've got my brackets fitted, but now I have two inertial belts which won't
give me any belt!!!

I've tried various angles, etc. They'll eat belt, no problem (both have now
eaten too much, for me to fit them correctly).

Any clues anyone?
