On a related note, has anyone in the States ever tried Scotchguard on a
canvas tilt? Seems to me to be an ideal application - protect it from UV,
waterproof it and generally keep trhe nasties out of the fabric.

Just a thought - I know that's available in most hardware stores by the
can.

I had a look over them at the motor show last week. The exhaust
hangs down 1 1/2" below the sill line for its full length! Go over
your first hill crest or along a deeply rutted track (as in following
750s shod Land Rovers (-; ) and watch the exhaust buckle! I was
amazed that Land Rover could do this, even on a predominantly road
biased car.

Subject: rust on galvanized frame?
Date: Mon, 27 Oct 97 07:50:58 -0500
From: David Russell <David_R@mindspring.com>

My used galvanized frame has some rust colored spots around the battery
tray and RH horn. The surface has not broken and it looks more like a
stain than anything else. There have been no repairs to this area, or any
part of the frame for that matter.

Should I be concerned, or is it just a stain?

Thanks!

Most likewy (as it's around the battery tray) is that you're getting some
leakage from an overcharging battery or the like and it's messing things
up.
A plastic tray for the battery might not be a bad idea...

It sounds to me like a blocked Jet in the carb. You will need to get

I have a d90 and have put a new system into my car. The factory stereo,
by Clarion, does not have self power. That is why the 30 watt amp in
included. I replaced my head unit with a stereo head unit that had
better power, put in new speakers to replace the 4 originals and
attached the factory 30 watt, along with the stereo output to these new
mids. Then, I added some subs which are connnected to a 200 watt amp.
I also added a Sony cd changer. I paid about 600$ for the head unit and
cd changer, 100 less than the factory cd player alone and I now have
better equipment.

Living in Miami, it is hard to get away from all the baseball hype, with some
form of championship being played... (I know, it is the so-called "world"

The Florida Marlins' manager is named *Leyland*. It was a wonder the whole
organization didn't fall apart with all the salt air down here.

Ok, for real rover content, I spotted a white LWB (109/110/Hicap with camper

for a sat-phone that does everything including e-mail. The LR is surrounded
by some interesting looking rocks in the middle of nowhere. Once again, a

earth. (we all know he's either trying to call AAA or send a posting to the

Sounds interesting. Does anybody know if there are diesels, too? Most

How does MVS sell them? In auctions or can go there, test drive and pick one

My 1970 88 has three point seat belts that are secured to the bulkhead with
the same type of shackle as the lower bulkhead mount. Assume these were
standard issue. Since they do not attach to the top they work fine with
the top off. There would be a slight downward pull in an accident so
wouldn't want to use these in a crash derby but they should keep you off
the dash board and in the car. They do not automatically adjust so not good
for two different size operators. I replaced the drivers side with a set
from RN that have the buckle on a semi rigid stalk so they can be put on
with one hand.

THE NEW CAR

This lady always wanted an expensive car; a status symbol to drive around
and be seen in. She scrimps and saves, goes to the dealer, and plops down
several years income for a brand new state-of-the-art, computer enhanced,
kick-ass, plush mobile.

As she's driving off, she decides she wants some music and searches for the
radio. The dashboard looks like a control panel at NASA. She fiddles with
this button, that gizmo, jiggles these and those, but finally gives up.
Can't find the damned thing.

Furious, she races back to the dealership and screams at the salesman.
Tells him they forgot to install the radio.

He assures her it's right there in front of her. It's hooked into the
onboard computer. It responds to verbal commands. All she has to do is
tell it what she wants. He demonstrates: "Classical", he says. *click*
The car fills with the sounds of the Portland String Quartet

"Blues", he says, and *click* a B.B. King classic plays.

She drives off amazed. "Country", she says, and *click* a Garth Brooks tune
comes on. "Folk" *click* Joan Baez sings about the night they drove ol'
Dixie down. "New Age" *click* Yanni at the Acropolis snaps on. She's so
captivated by this new toy that she isn't paying much attention to the road.
Another driver runs a light and cuts her off.

"A**HOLE!!!" she screams. *click* "Good morning, everyone. You're
listening to the Rush Limbaugh Show"

Apologies for limited Leaf Sprung Rover content.

Subject: LR Fun in the Snow

Denver has just had the best ever weekend for Land Rover fun in the city.
Two to three feet of snow fell Friday and Saturday on the city and along the
front range of the mountains. Highways in and out of the city were closed
and it became almost impossible to get to or from the airport.

Had more fun pulling stuck 4x4s out of snowbanks. People always seem to be
amazed at what can be done by a 32 year old truck with a dinkey little four
cylinder engine and tall narrow 7.50 16 mud & snow tires. Even got to
recover a stuck moving van while helping a friend who had the bad luck to be
moving this weekend. In the process, a gent in a white 110 SW stopped to
admire the old beast and chat.

Lots of evidence here of the truth in the observation by our local off-road
driving guru that driving through challenges is mostly driver and a little
bit tires.

First off, if the electricals are cutting out completely, then the
distributor cap is the least of your worries. I'd be much more likely to
believe one of your main battery cables is bad - try cleaning the posts and
terminals to the battery, making sure they're tightened properly.

If you're losing it all AND the headlights, the wiring harness ain't
it.....8*)

As far as a schematic, the Haynes Land-Rover manual is a good source,
though their technical accuracy is not the greatest. British Pacific has a
smudgy one up on their website which can give you a good general idea what
goes where even if it doesn't match your car precisely.

As far as electrical problems, don't sweat them. A little prodding around
with a test lamp can usually extricate you from the seepest trouble.

I=B4ve seen such a harness in an ex mil landrover 109 softtop on a

But I did not get the numbers on it. If I manage It this year to go =

it, because I have the problem with the seat-belt also.

The harness is like a small roll bar behind the seats. abt. 25 cm high
(maybe a foot) and made from
1 inch tube. It has mounting points for the upper seat belt mounting
(?).

I thought that might be the situation. Probably a smart move as the
Europeans are a bit more tolerant to first run problems than the
Americans and a whole lot less likely to sue if thay are dissapointed
with their new car. As for the Camel Trophy if they are taking bicycles
why not take a car too and don't forget the grey poop, err poupon.

this a standard land rover part, was supposed to be on all soft tops
after a certain year. They can still be had new, I looked into one
here a few months ago. it was about two hundred $$US, from a fairly

The Leyland Tractor was really quite good I ran one for a number of
years and never had a diesel that would start better when cold and I
mean Canadian Winter cold. It was killed off by high production costs
mainly due to inefficient labour management in common with so much of
the Leyland empire. I still have a number of new parts going reeeeel

Subject: Smoking 2286 Petrol (strange).

Dear all.

My engine won't quit smoking. On the throttle (under loead) it smokes
black and when returning to idle (and when pumping the accellerator)
it smokes blue.

I did a compression test. 157, 158, 157, 153. The gasket seems to
hold the compression even though there is oil leaking from under the
head onto the block. The gasket is fiber and i (incorrectly?) lubed
it before fitting two years ago.

Even if it leaks it seems that oil/water can not get into the
cylinders between the head and the block. The compression would be
much lower if this was the case, right?.

Ignition and valves were adjusted recently. The problem started after
this situation:

I was tightening the vacuum tube connector with the engine running.
When the smear of Hylomar was complete around the connector the
engine died. It took some effort to get it started again, tampering
with the idle and mixture screw.

Could this smoking problem be a carburettor thing? The Weber 34ich is
two years old.

What puzzles me is the two kinds of smoke. Something fundamental must
be wrong here.

Anyone got an idea?.

You have two separate problems. The Blue smoke is oil burning and the
black smoke is fuel. I think you have poor valve stem oil seals which
allows oil to go down the intake valve stems into the cylinder. This
will be most noticable when youare slowing down with the throttle close
as the manifold vacuum is highest then. I am sure there is also a
problem in the carb. You have way too much gas going in and when you
fixed the vacuum leak at the tube it can,t get enough air. Check the
float level in the carb and the needle valve to be sure it is closing
properly. you also need to check the air filter as a clogged airfilter
will give these sme symptoms.
best of luck John and Muddy

Subject: SIIA Seat Replacement for Backseat Drivers
Date: Tue, 28 Oct 1997 00:08:23 -0500

This weekend I found a backseat (one piece, two seater base and separate,
matching top) from some Eurosedan that provides an excellent seat
replacement option for my SIIA 88. Features include:

+ Medium gray, soft, smooth-textured, leatherlike vinyl upholstery
(Baby Elephanthide?)
+ Bottom piece can be removed easily, permitting access to the toolbox
+ Top piece fits perfectly against the bulkhead and can be bolted down to
it.
+ Much lighter than the original seats or replacement front seats
+ Bucket seating
+ Highback with neck protection
+ Center armrest
+ Holes for seatbelt stalks
+ Narrow enough for 3-point seatbelts to fit over
+ Foam and vinyl construction means great soundproofing of seatbox
and bulkhead
+ Too high for my dog to jump over but low enough not to obstruct
view on any side
+ Easier installation than two bolt-in bucket seats with almost as
firmly seated a feeling.

The best part is that, since it apparently was tossed because of a 3"
slit in the passenger side seat, I get to fix the new seating with the
old standby -- duct tape! (At least until I mend it properly).

I'll let you all know if I figure out what make and model it came from.
Any comments or warnings welcome directly or to the list.

Best regards,

Neil

Subject: Series Tires

I own a '74 SIII 88 with the original 15" rims. The current tires are old
Bridgestone Desert Dueller sized 225-75-15 which have to be replaced (dry
rot). I would like to use the 15" rims but upgrade to a taller tire to get
more ground clearance for moderate off-roading activities. I need to know
what tires may fit without requiring fender trimming or adjustment to the
bump stops. It would be helpful if I can get advice on sizes and brands that
have been sucessfully used.

Thanks in advance,

Hi all!

after four exciting weeks in Alaska, I have returned to Denmark - only
to find over 1500 posings from you all (what do i expect when I don't
unsubscribe).

I had a great day with a fellow LRO in Anchorage - Ron Sutcliffe - who
besides having a veryu nice RR, in which he took me for an amzing trip
around the locality, also has an almost pristine red lightweight which
looks as if it will be a great car.

Thanks for a great day Ron! I'll mail you later

I must confess that the 1500 postings were so daunting, I decided to
scrub the lot - so just in case anyone has written to me - sorry!

But it was good to see that there's still life on the LRO net.

BF Goodrich makes a 9.50x15 tire in a 33inch height in a couple tread
patterns that would be good for rover duty. If I can't scare up some 16inch
rims soon at a reasonable price, I may go with them for Pansy. Anybody tried
these?
