I think marking one side "Bottom" is much better than marking one side
"top." Means if you put it on wrong side down you will know.

Subject: radio/CD player

With all this talk on radio / CD systems I like to ask a question. Is
it necessary to replace the amp in a D90 when changing the stereo
system? I was milling through a car audio store the other week and was
told that the whole system had to be replaced because Land Rover has
their systems specifically designed for Rover and therefore incompatable
with other CD players, CD changers, etc. I find that hard to believe,
at least on the Defender.

Can anyone describe the test procedure for the voltage regulator on a late
IIa? The unit has a plastic cover that is secured with plastic rivets. Is
it serviceable? The only test I've come across deals with the older type
were the cover is secured with a bale. Any advice would be appreciated.

The stock radio in my 110 has what looks to be a round receptacle for a CD
changer. The pattern looked like the plug on my sister's Pioneer unit but
we've never had our cars in the same place to see... it looked like a
standard round multi-pin plug. I lifted a round white plastic piece to get at
it. As an alternative, a radio-nerd told me that there was some sort of FM
line thingy that went in line with the existing antenna and I would have to
tune my radio to some preset station and have a separate controller for the
CD changer.

Incidentally, the radio is also labelled "Range Rover" on the back.

Actually, the top part of the seat belt triangle mounts to the bulkhead
behind the seats on my IIa. As long as the belt is properly adjusted I
feel..well SAFE isn't the word....well, you get the idea.

Hi all~

We residents of central NC have traditionally had no real outlet for our
geekiness. I have taken this to heart and I'm organizing a club. What I need
from you, my fine list friends, are two things:

a) Names and addresses of prospective members. Either yourself or others.

b) any tips/good advices/other general information that may be helpful. I've
got some good ideas, but any wisdom passed on will be warmly received.

Please Email me directly at:

I've been following the seat belt thread, and have looked in my parts
manual, and various catalogs, and haven't seen a three-point harness
solution that is intended for a soft-top. Surely there must be such a
thing? I figure the bulkhead, with appropriate mounting bits, can take
the strain of a pair of belts. I am not sure that I trust my engineering,
and don't really want to find out! Has anyone done something about this?

Hi All

I have a problem. My 88 won't run with out the choke 1/2 way on. it will
idle, but when you try and apply gas it misses back fires through the
exhaust all sorts of stuff.
It have a standard Lr 2.25 motor with a solex carb.
What I have done is the following things:

New points (set to LR shop Manuel gap size)
	New condenser
	New spark plug wires
Checked timing as best as possible.
added gas additive to remove water (heat)

All had little or no effect on problem!

Checked
	Fuel supply to carb good

Motor idles at around 1100 rpm off choke But will not accelerate with out
"braking up" and seems like It won't go over 40mph with the choke on 1/2
way doing 3000 rpm in 4th gear.

Any thoughts on this problem?
HELP!!!

Subject: Windshield wipers

I have a SIIA with the single-speed indpendent wiper motors. During the
middle of the 200 mile drive home this afternoon, the drivers side wiper
motor decided that it didn't want to wipe anymore. Having just rebuilt
it, I figured that I had bodged the solder joints and would have to take
it apart again. Fiddling with it in the rest stop revealed that what was
happening was that the shaft was binding againt the windshield frame. I
couldn't adjust the nuts holding it place to hold it in a position where
it wasn't binding. So I shimmed it in place with a quarter between the
wiper and the "defogger". The result is a wiper that wipes pretty
quickly. In fact, it has a better angular velocity than the wipers on my
Toyota do. Of course, it only sweeps 90 degrees, so there is still a
pretty big not clear area.

So if your wipers don't, and you know the electrics and grease are good,
check that you don't have a wiper shaft binding against the window frame.

David

Now, if I could just get the other wiper back together....

Subject: Camel Freelander -- Suits Me Sir!

Having just resubscribed to the list after a loooooooong summer
vacation, I must apologise if this has been brought up before now. If it
hasn't, then here goes:

Having just bought the latest issue of LROI (Nov. I think it is) and
read the report on the Camel pre-scout recce, I must say that I have had
my mind well and truly changed about the Freelandy. When I read the
first reports about it, I thought, "Hairdressers car, Eugh" but now, I
have virtually nothing but praise for it. I say virtually, because what
sort of 'true' off-roader doesn't have a low range set of gears. Then
again, how many 'true' off-roaders do not wear L-R badges (oooh,
controversial, and not at all biased!). The report is truly heart
warming, confirming that the Freeloader isn't, but is infact a
Land-Rover.
Another thing about it is; Doesn't it look georgeous, all kitted up,
with moulded light pods on the roof, an A-frame nudge bar, and
under-body steering protection plate?
Maybee this is the boy-racer in me coming out (I never went through that
stage, and as an 18 year old with a very low speed vehicle (but oh-so
superior) I might be getting urges for that sort of thing!) but boy
would I love a three door hard-top, in full on Camel trophy spec. Could
that be a possibility for a future special edition, we wonders quietly
to ourselves?
Anyway, to stop myself rambling on and on:
If its good enough for the Camel Trophy, it should be good enough for
the semi-serious off-roader to use in medium to tough RTV's (with a set
of aggressive tyres (or tires for those over the pond) stuck on
it............but thats another rant!)

Ah,but have you noticed the route? Mainly on "graded" roads.I would
venture to suggest nothing a decently equipped rally car couldnt cope
with. And thats what it looks like to me.

Yeah, not trying to shoot the Freelander down in flames but it did seem
a bit low to the ground for serious off roading. The main advantage it
seems to have was the weight difference (light makes it easier to cross
some difficult surfaces) and the traction control. These features seemed
to help it cope better in the slippery conditions than the support
vehicles. But hey, I wasn't there on the preparation trip, have only
ever driven a 90 and have yet to take mine off road seriously (doing the
wee beasty up still) so don't take my word for it/sue me if your
Freelander has trouble with snow!

The jets in the carb are clogged - go back and clean out the carburettor,
then blow out all the passages with spray carb cleaner.

This should fix it....

On another point, if you have an inline fuel filter change it too....
