VIVA ROCHESTER!!!, as someone else has said(JM Reinan)...

Some of you have asked for the rochester carb rebuild kit info...so
listen up...

For Model 'B' (manual choke from early '50s Chevy 235 six, manual
trans.):
	call Obsolete Chevy at - 800-248-8785...ask for their kit p/n - 2018.

For Model 'BC' or 'BV' (variations of automatic choke, late '50s -
'60s):
call local NAPA - ask for Eichlin kit p/n - 2-5404A
also available from Obsolete Chevy.(sorry don't have that p/n)

The difference between the model carbs and kits is the stuff for the
auto choke, but the main concern for B models is a difference in the
accelerator pump rod. On the B, it is flat steel, with a slot to
connect to the actuator arm. On the BC or BV, the pump rod is round
nylon and connects to the actuator via a clip. I swapped the seal from
the nylon rod in my Eichlin kit to my steel rod and it seemed a bit
tight in the bore. I have the proper kit on order from Obsolete Chevy
and hope the pump rod in that kit is a better fit, as I am experiencing
a hesitation / flat spot that I think is due to the seal sticking in the
bore. Or it might be the #48 jet being a little lean. Just in case I
am ordering up a #51 and #52 jets from BritPac today. I will try just
the pump rod first, then the larger jets, as needed. Report L8r.
I have also found an air cleaner that will work temporarily. It is a 4"
round pancake paper element from Auto Zone here,(just as Jay reported
was available from Pep Boys) but is a name brand that escapes me at the
moment(Mr. Gasket??). Its not a great fit in that I have to use a slice
off of a 2" ID radiator hose, 3"s tall, inside the larger neck of the
air cleaner to fit the neck of the Model B. At least I can now close
the bonnet. I am still looking for a permanent solution, so suggestions
are still welcome. What is needed is an elbow to displace the LR metal
snorkel. Needs to bend aprox. 90 degrees and be 1" shorter than the LR
snorkel. I know I can cut the snorkel off 1", but really really hate to
bugger it, as it's a $95 part! May fave to fabricate an air box or
adapt one from a late model junker. Oh, and I just put a couple of
motorcycle breather elements on the crankcase and valve cover vent hose
ends. What's a little more oil in the engine bay, Eh?
BTW, (4u purists) discovered yesterday a rebuilder here in Richmond who
can rebuild / restore (replace broken case parts(tach drives!), rewind
armatures, paint) Lucas Generators and Starters! Will cost @ $25!! to
restore a genny, including rewinding the armature. Great deal. Type
for details.

Non LR Trivia: Anyone identify who was famous for uttering my subject
line ?
Hints: First name: What tool is used to lift a LR?
Last name: rymes with the nickname for a major component of early
Series electrical systems.

Subject: Freelander

I can't understand why so many want to trash the Freelander true it
isn't my choice of vehicle but any company needs to market to as wide
a group of buyers as possible. There is a growing number of people who
want that type of car. Hopefully Freelander will generate large profits
so that when I am ready to buy the vehicle I want Land Rover will still
be a healthy viable company with a varied product base. Sure it isn't
likely to be as competant Off Road as a D90 but it isn't intended for
the same people who want/need one of those. If the market was opened up
by Toyota or Honda so what? If Land Rover can sell them I say go for
it.

I work for GM and was wondering what the Gazelle is based on (it looked
familar). How certain is your identification of the body as Foers Ibex?
Could it be a fiberglass body copied from the Ibex? Several months ago
Automotive News mentioned the Gazelle. They noted that they couldn't
confirm some of the claims made about who was supplying what, notably
the engine. Somehow the claims for the Gazelle and the price don't seem
to add up. I'm not expecting to see any on the roads in the US.

John: I think the tube you mentioned is supposed to be a lean air connection
for the engine breather. Dont let your engine breather run without some sort
of filtration as dust etc. will be drawn into the crankcase, with eventually
unhappy results.
Also, dont eliminate the phenolic block for the very reason you mention- the
alum carb body will soak up heat and cause all sorts of running problems.
On the subject of Series carbs I like the SU setup used by Rev. Andrew
Stevens on the SIIA engine in his 7902DF, shown on page 97 of the October
LROI. I wonder if the manifold connection is one that he made or if it came
off of the 2.6L.

Hello,

I am installing and reinstalling equiptment on my rover and I would like
to find out others views and techniques on making a solid watertight
electrical connections. Currently I am soldering wires together and
applying a compound, coating the connection, called liquid tape (a
liquid electrical tape). Is this sufficent? Should heat shrink tubing
come into the picture?

Subject: rear seat latches for Disco

Hi all, I have a '97 Discovery SD, and I occasionally have to haul
stuff in the back that is _just_ long enough to not fit unless one or
both of the rear seats is physically removed from the vehicle, not
just folded.

Manually unbolting them with a 10mm ratchet gets old pretty fast.
Does anyone have a pointer to a replacement for the stock mounting
brackets that would allow a quick (and preferably tool-less) removal
and replacement of the seats?

Please reply to me, not the list, as I'm currently redirecting my lro
mail to a file for perusal at a later date (no time, too much work).
I'll summarize to the list if there is ample interest.

Thanks,

Date: Thu, 23 Oct 1997 13:45:52 PDT

Having just resubscribed to the list after a loooooooong summer
vacation, I must apologise if this has been brought up before now. If it
hasn't, then here goes:

Having just bought the latest issue of LROI (Nov. I think it is) and
read the report on the Camel pre-scout recce, I must say that I have had
my mind well and truly changed about the Freelandy. When I read the
first reports about it, I thought, "Hairdressers car, Eugh" but now, I
have virtually nothing but praise for it. I say virtually, because what
sort of 'true' off-roader doesn't have a low range set of gears. Then
again, how many 'true' off-roaders do not wear L-R badges (oooh,
controversial, and not at all biased!). The report is truly heart
warming, confirming that the Freeloader isn't, but is infact a
Land-Rover.
Another thing about it is; Doesn't it look georgeous, all kitted up,
with moulded light pods on the roof, an A-frame nudge bar, and
under-body steering protection plate?
Maybee this is the boy-racer in me coming out (I never went through that
stage, and as an 18 year old with a very low speed vehicle (but oh-so
superior) I might be getting urges for that sort of thing!) but boy
would I love a three door hard-top, in full on Camel trophy spec. Could
that be a possibility for a future special edition, we wonders quietly
to ourselves?
Anyway, to stop myself rambling on and on:
If its good enough for the Camel Trophy, it should be good enough for
the semi-serious off-roader to use in medium to tough RTV's (with a set
of aggressive tyres (or tires for those over the pond) stuck on
it............but thats another rant!)

"I've used K&N for years on Land Rovers. Remove the entire air
cleaner asssembly and install K&N part #RU0690. Presumably, you have a PVC
setup. Replace the hose that runs from the crankcase breather on the valve
cover to the air cleaner elbow with K&N part #62-1320. This is a tiny
filter that will allow only clean air into your crankcase. Alternatively,
you can fabricate a means to plumb the hose into the base of the air
filter."

From: Jules@learnlink.emory.edu (Sean P. Murphy)

Ok, so we already know that Rover people are nutcases:

I am organizing a gathering of people to run trails at Tellico for
Thanksgiving weekend. We will be starting on Thursday and ending on
Sunday, visitors are welcome all weekend long. For those that aren't
familiar with the location, it's at the borders of TN and NC in the
southeastern US. We have a few 90's and a Series III so far and welcome
any vehicles that want to try the trails. Tellico is an exciting area and
has trails ranging from moderate to agonizing. We will be doing some
turkeys for the holiday while we're there, for those that can't miss
traditional festivities. <GRIN>

further info and maps on our club web site at

Actually this was a major inconvenience that would have been avoided if I had known
beforehand. Our island server messed up over the weekend end and I have spent a lot of
time trying to find out if my LR mail was bouncing. It was me, after all, who coined
the term Costa Rica Bill, and I have lived in fear of repeating his mailer messup. I
tried unsubscribing from the 4 LR lists on Monday and had no confirmations. As far as
I knew I was likely to be responsible for the cluttering of everyone's mailboxes. I
ended up phoning a friend in the US to ask them to subscribe to the LR list and see if
it was defunct because of my address.

Oh yes - the local server told us after the fact that they had been changing their
system.

Allan.

I had to pay for that J..p designation. Inspection time again - of course the
truck/series IV sits outside, the form-filler sits inside and never do the twain meet.
Start filling in the forms :- car type = Land Rover, model = Jeep, thus a jump from 25
- 40 $ because it is 4WD. Lets pay for that lack of inspection of additional
transmission components.

But at the end of the day, when you hear " `I like da Jeep", how can you hate it when
it is an accolade in your neck of the woods and you know it applies to the LR.

Also - I just saw a new SIII 109 PU this week, immaculate, with a sign on rear reading
"4X4 for real".
Yes I.

up (only for 10 seconds but long enough to recognise there was a problem)

To cut a long story short, there is a steel sleeve in the oil pump housing
that the pressure relief valve slides in, this sleeve is pressed in to the
alloy housing, it had fallen out and cut off the oil flow.

This is only one of the many things it may be, but worth checking.

Regards
David Ashcroft

Not the tag office, but my insurance company, called my 88 a 'Rang', short for
Range Rover. I complained and they sent me a new card that called it a Ford,
assuming that 'rang' was short for ranger. I complained again, cause no proof
of insurance in GA can get your vehicle impounded, and some cops seem to have
had their sense of humor surgically removed. They finally got it right.
Cheers!!

But a little bit knowledge can be a bad thing. Mine translated "Military
