My insurance company got it right. When I called for a quote, the agent
made the "like Milton Berle?" comment, and then quoted a rate almost 1/3
of what I pay for my '88 Toyota saloon. I was pleasantly suprised.

Hi!
Im trying to get my newest LR on the move - its a S3 SWB 1973 Diesel that
has been standing outside for quite some time - thats really irrelevant The
thing is that im missing the outlet union from the fuel pump - you know the
thing that screws in the pump and connect the fuel hose to it - Im
wondering how it looks like - Are there two hoses connecting to it? - there
are two hose ends leading to it! - And how are they connected?

Anyone!

Olafur,

The fitting is not complicated - an auto-parts shop that does anything real
should be able to supply you with one.

Not sure of the threading, but the inlet on the pump side looks to be a
fine pipe thread, while the other end is a compression fitting male (to
accept the nut on the end of the LR fuel hose).

Take the pump and go to an auto-parts place - they should be able to fix
you up.

I am sorry if this is a repeat for anyone but...
A few people are planning to meet in the Upper Tellico area for a

planning to be there soon after lunch on Thursday and leave out at a
reasonable hour on Sunday. If anyone is interested, let me know.

Subject: Valve Springs & Copper Head Gaskets

Howdy all.
My head rebuild kit (2.25 petrol) from Atlantic British contains parts that
are obviously different from the very original parts that were removed from
my truck. I'm concerned about the differences affecting the life of my
motor.
The old valve springs are actually two sets of springs...one inside of the
other. But the new springs which have already been installed are simply one
spring...they don't even seem to be thicker or anything. Are they simply
aftermarket cheese, or is there a reason the newer versions look quite a
bit less robust?
Secondly, the new copper head gasket really creeps me out. I'm going to
reuse the old one unless one of you folks can convice me there is a valid
reason why some of the openings contained in the old version are either
non-existant or severly diminished in the new version. The openings appear
to be openings for water passages and I have a hard time believing that
constriction of cooling ability is actually a good thing.
Going through the archives I found an old post that claims the front of the
engine cools faster than the rear and the "smaller than original" passage
openings in the gasket were an attempt to even the rates of cooling between
the fron and the rear of the head/block.
Thanks a truck load,
JAnkeny

Mine too. Anything wrong with the old ones? A machine shop can check the spring
tension for you. Should be part of any head rebuild. Some of the older motors
had the single springs I think, Don't know if they're any better or worse.
Re-use the old ones if the'yre ok, and send back the ones you don't need for
credit.

Secondly, the new copper head gasket really creeps me out. I'm going to

Head coolant flows from the front, so the holes in front are smaller to
allow more coolant to the back. Or is it the other way around. Both the
head gasket I removed (copper) and the one I put on (Genuine, composite)
were set up this way. Shouldn't be a problem, as long as the cooling system
is functioning properly elsewhere.

Don't reuse the old one, once they're off they're done, unless you're stuck
in the bush or something...

Hi all,

I went to Sears, got their heavy duty guaranteed for life 2 armed puller
(Guaranteed up to 7 tons of force) and this evening went to work.

After some struggles with a 3 foot pipe on the socket handle, the arm popped
off. However, the threaded end of the rocker shaft did splay out over the
last few threads.

Can I replace just the threaded end of the rocker shaft? (Looks like it in the
parts manual--SIII steering box)

Can I just have the splayed out part cut off and reuse the shaft as is?

How will I get the shaft out with the end splayed (I don't think it will fit
through the bushing any longer)?

Subject: LR toy at KMart

I just saw a battery powered monster truck, Lanark #8016. It was a Defender
with sky high suspension, chrome (ack!) headers peering through the front
fenderwells, Bikini fastback top. Side of the box showed a similar Chevy
truck. For less than $12.00. if anyone is interested.
As for me, I'm usually a sucker for a LR toy, but pu-leeez!!! Tres Tacky!
Cheers!!

Subject: Best Price Garmin GPSIII - NO LR CONTENT

I know there are a number of Rover and GPS enthusiasts out there, so I
thought it pertinent to pass this info along for those who are considering
the Garmin GPS III. Got mine a couple of days ago and it blows the Garmin
45 away with functions. It's really cool!

So who's got them in stock in at a great price? West Marine (800.538.0775)
so far!

Here's the story.

First of all they match anyone's price. So I told them that Defender
Industries (another boating supply store) was selling the unit for $337.95
(800-628-8225) and they said no problem on matching the price. They might
ask for the telephone nuber to verify.

Well the way to get an even better price was with the coupon that comes
with their catalog. If this is your first purchase from West Marine's
catalog they will knock off $30 for purchases over $300. Be sure to ask for
the discount.

So the total cost for the unit about $307 + shipping ($15).

Here are the drawbacks:

They did charge sales tax.

The units West Marine are shipping come with the firmware 2.02 which does
have a bug. You do get a free upgrade from Garmin, but you do have to send
the unit in. For the bug to even be noticable you have to go through a
crazy sequence of operations (I can send it if you really want it or
sci.geo.satellite-nav). The unit works fine and someday I will send mine in
for the fix, but it works fine, don't worry.

But overall not a bad deal and they are in stock.

It's up and running with the Lowe's antenna and this little gadget kicks ass!

Of course, the standard disclaimer, I'm not with Garmin, blah, blah, blah...

Hopefully, just some useful info.
Chris

Tighten the puller with a lever no more than 18" long, then try the
hammer and heating techniques. (Heat the rocker arm, not the shaft)
Steady force alone won't budge a really tight taper fit. The metal will
distort first as you discovered.

The shaft and "fork" on the other end are an integral unit.

Take a file and carefully file the cylindrical surface which is splayed
out until it is the original diameter or very slightly smaller. (Don't
try to shorten the shaft, just reduce the diameter which is too large.)
If the swelling isn't too large, you may be able to restore the threads
with a triangular file after reducing the diameter.

Since shaft is tapered where the drop arm fits over it, the threaded
portion is a smaller diameter than the hole in the bushing.
