Hi all,
anybody knows what could be the reason that I've destroyed after only 2500=

km one of my (very expensive 24 V water resistant, no-radio-interference)
spark plugs ?
The year before, one (the same cilinder) was bad after 5000 km, the other
three were more or less OK.
Something wrong with that particular cilinder or co=EFncidence ? (please say=

co=EFncidence).

This is certainly true. The Ford Explorer is probably a very good
example of this :).

Without low range, I doubt many people would agree with you that the
Freelander is far superior to the Toyota, Nissan, Mitsubishi... SUV's.
I wish it every success also, but it is competition for the RAV4
crowd, not the 4Runner, Montero... crowd.

The Wrangler would likely blow away the Freelander offroad. On road,
the Freelander might be the better vehicle, but I suspect the Cherokee
and Grand Cherokee would give it stiff competition (and also blow it
away off road).

I'll probably regret this, but what about Toyota Land Cruisers?

I was just in Westchester, NY visiting my sick ol' ma.
HOW exciting!

Last Friday, I saw a red bottomed SIII(?) SWB pulling what looked like a personal hover craft on
a trailer. I vaguely remember reading that an LRO was working on one of those. I was in the
gray Saab 9000 waving madly. Hi.

Also, at 684 meets 84, on Saturday, I saw another SIII, this one all white, in a more typical
presentation: beiong pulled onto a flat bed for towing!

We seldom see series Rovers here in MN.

Dream evaporated yeaterday when I called Charlie in Western Minnesota and he had already sold
his SIII. It was the first I had seen in my price range ($2500), although I'd rather have the
headlights of a IIa.

Also, have you ever been confused by OME and OEM? (What is OEM?)

Sorry about the stream of consciousness- I didn't even offer a bow wave for the fording.

Vicarious Rovalova,
Trying to get a life,

Subject: SII Floating Flywheel
Date: Mon, 29 Sep 1997 09:58:24 -0700

Hi all!

Installed my shiny resurfaced, re-ring geared flywheel this weekend and
fired up the engine (with no transmission) to watch the starter engage
with the flywheel and make sure everything was o.k. Even found the
drain plug which was in, explaining the 1/2 pint of engine oil in the
bottom of the flywheel housing ;-)

To my horror, or at least shock, as I blipped the throttle, the flywheel
and, I am assuming, the crankshaft to which it is bolted, moved back and
forth almost one inch! (25 mm for those in Europe) I confirmed that
the same motion could be seen at the crank pulley up front, although not
as noticeable there.

I am surprised that this much play is possible, knowing the close
tolerances that must be maintained in the bottom end of an engine. The
engine sounds fine with know signs of knocking or banging from within.
Should I be worried? Is this much play at the crank common? Is there
as much play at the big end bearing? Or is the motion pulling the piston
con rods with it? {Shudder]

Sorry for the delay...been away. When I converted to the B30 engine, the 109
used had been a NA spec 2.6L. I made a conversion plate by cutting off the
engine side of a Volvo bell housing and the transmission side of the Rover
flywheel cover. A dial indicator was used to center the 2 pieces, they were
clamped together, then welded. If memory serves me,the thickness of this
adapter was only about an inch and a quarter. The Volvo and Rover Pressure
plate and clutch are the same, so I used the Volvo flywheel and Rover
clutch. There were a couple of gaps between the 2 halves that were left open
to allow the motor and trans to be bolted together. These were later sealed
with silicon caulk. I used some pieces of channel iron to fabricate the
front mounts and bolted it in. I did have to install an electric radiator
fan as there isn't enough clearance for the stock fan. Hope the info proves
useful

Date: Mon, 29 Sep 1997 14:17:25 -0400

I just purchased a great 109 5 door Safari wagon that has no engine or
trans. I have found two early 60s Rover 3000 sedans which have the 6
cyl engine in them. I understand the Land Rover engine is just a de
tuned version of the sedan engine. The sedans have the automatic
transmission. Anyone know the difficulties of using the sedan engine in
a Land Rover?

What is the horsepower and torque rating on the sedan engine. It looks
like the same engine to me. I can get them both at a good price. Any
adivce?

Or perhaps I should put in the Chevy 350 I have sitting in the garage.
Any one experienced with this conversion?

Do yourself a favor and skip the V8 unless you want to replace halfshafts
weekly - the transmission for the 6-cylinder engine can be had and it's an
essential restoration of the original (if the wagon was a 6-banger).

If the wagon was originally a 4-cylinder car, a Chevy Iron Duke in fighting
trim might be a better choice...

The 109 was originally a 2.6, hence the consideration to go back to the
same engine. I also have a brand new Turner rebuilt 2.25 which I could
install. You suggest the 2.6 tranny can be had. Is it any different
than the 2.25 tranny? Why do you suggest the 350 chev as a good
possible replacement for the 2.25 and not the 2.6? Won't you still have
the rear half shaft snapping problem in less you install a Salsbury rear
end?

Kanter Automotive Products (www.kanter.com) (1-800-526-1096) markets a gas
tank sealant for steel tanks. Kanter's specialty is automotive restoration
parts (need running boards for your Packard?).

I bought a quart for 20 dollars (US) because my tank was badly rusted. You
derust and clean the tank, pour a quart in, slosh it all around, then go away
for 24 hrs. It worked well and left a shiny white coating which is almost
rubbery. It's also safe for gasohol. If you ever need to remove the coating,
Kanter claims that pouring a gallon of methyl ethyl ketone in the tank will
dissolve the coating in 1 hour.

They also market a floor board chemical patch, which looks like it would have
applications on deteriorated bulkhead footwells.

I'm not affiliated, etc....

When my father had the ol rover serviced by a "traditional shop" they
aparently would throw the bolts away and only bolt the floor down with one
or two (just enough to hold the part). I am cleaning the mud shields from
up under the wheel wells and noticed that they only fixed the shield back
with 2 bolts (the minimum), usually 6 or 7 are in order.
It`s upsetting to trust a shop and have work done like this. The original
threaded bolts and nuts are tough to find.

As far as I can tell from the parts book the only gearboxes are the same
for 4 & 6 cyl LRs other than the flywheel housing and bell housing.

The Iron Duke refered to in another response is a 2.5 4 cyl, which is
more properly a Pontiac engine. There was an older Chevy version used in
Chevy IIs.

Re 2.6 vs. 2.25 vs 350:

I don't like the 350 for any of them - it's too much engine for a Rover
drivetrain if you have a heavy foot.

The 2.6 transmission is different in the bellhousing, else it's the same as
the one for the 2.25. if youy want a 2.6 tranny I can point you to a friend
who has several (as his car has one and he lucked into a lode of them...).

The Turner 2.25 is a lovely engine also, but if the car had a 2.6 it might
be easier to reinstall what was there.....

If it's got a Salisbury that helps...not that either of the original
engines is going to do in the drivetrain.....

rally, you risk missing out on the Saturday banquet and Sunday brunch - I've
gotta get hard numbers to the caterer by Friday AM.

I'll be toting the 'luggable' to the rally, so I'll remote post any last
minute inforamtion and check my mail...if the two-tin-cans-and-a-string
phone system in Buckingham is up to it, that is. Cheers

Hello all,
Does anyone happen to have some grey IIA Station Wagon trim in serviceable
shape they would be willing to part with? I am looking for
everything...particularly the interior doors.
thanks,

Subject: Latest LROI

Hi all,

I cracked up reading the article about "Project: Red Range Rover". I can't
decide if that section is supposed to be helpful or LROI's version of Goofus
and Gallant. What a classic newbie move: Buy a decent looking/running
truck, do a minimal servicing on it, then take it out and do something really
dumb before you know the vehicle. And the part with the fire extinguisher:
That should have been with a Lexus Landcruiser--there's nothing like waiting
for a disaster before learning how to use your safety equipment!

The only thing left for them to do now is to go out by themselves in the
winter, thrash around in the snow, get stuck and try to figure out how to run
a winch.

Somehow it reminds me of the Stooges...

Nate
