From: "Rob Symons" <safari@iafrica.com> Subject: Re Oil Pressure Date: Thu, 11 Sep 1997 16:20:37 +0200 Hi All, We are going to try another oil pump on the weekend just to see about the pressure release valve. I also suspect my oil cooler as seems that the pressure drops when the oil stat opens. The cooler is a stock LR part from the 2.5 TD. It works by routing the oil from the filter through the cooler to the block. There is a thermostat that allows the oil to bypass the cooler when cool. Any thoughts. What about pressure loss through the rocker assembly? Date: 11 Sep 1997 10:42:04 -0400 From: "LT J Jackson" <lt_j_jackson@unixlink.uscga.edu> Subject: Idling my time away My SIII (2.25 gas) won't idle. It will barely start, and then only after vigorous cranking and a dancer's touch on the accelerator once it fires (it needs to get up to a fast idle quickly or it will die). I know that my gas is dirty (I can attribute this problem to my neglect - there's never time to do it right the first time, but always time to do it over). During my frameover, I neglected to derust and seal the inside of my tanks. Here's how the problem started and what I've done since - any diagnosis would be helpful. Day 1: Put a few gallons in the tank. Car starts right up after a few months of setting. Day 2 - 20: During the final phase of the project, drive the car in and out of the garage for various reasons. Always starts right up, idles without a problem. Day 21: Take car for a test-spin round the block. Run out of gas in the drive as I return. Day 22: Put a few more gallons in. Car starts, continues to idle without problems. Day 25: Car is roadworthy. Day 26: First drive to work planned. Car won't start. Day 26.5: Come home at lunch - car starts. Drive to work. Fill tank at station. Car begins running rough, dies at a stop, barely restarts, cutting out on the highway. Barely get home. Since then, the car has been damnably hard to start, and hasn't left my driveway. When it does start, I have to run it at fast idle. If I let it die or shut it off, it will not restart for a good long while. Here's what I've done since: Rebuilt the Weber. Cleaned out all jets/passages, including the screen just downstream of the fuel intake. Drained/replaced gas (I'm waiting for my tank sealer to arrive). Replaced fuel pump. Checked for spark often - plenty of juice at the plugs. Set/reset the idle mix (1.5 turns out - even more helps to get it started). Set the idle speed: 1 turn past contact with throttle arm, per the Weber 34ICH manual - which I can copy and send to anyone who's interested (4 pages). Would dirty gas alone cause this problem? Is it possible for a Weber carb to develop a problem which causes this and can't be solved by rebuilding? Sorry for the length of this post. Any advice would be appreciated. From: "Rob Symons" <safari@iafrica.com> Subject: RE: Engine Conversions Date: Thu, 11 Sep 1997 16:46:51 +0200 Hi All, I must be unusual in that my 109 SW started with a 6 cyl Chev 4.1litre, progressed to a 2.5 TD and now has a 2.25 petrol. The Chev regularly broke the transmission, (gearbox, clutch and front diff). Not for the middle of the Kalahari. It was heavy on juice too. Lovely on the road however. The 2.5 diesel was a disaster. It performed well but had a short life and was too costly to rebuild. However I had the same fuel consumption as a smaller car. The 2.25 is slow on the road, less thirsty than the Chev, and the Landy seems a lot happier. It seems to be more reliable but time will tell (low oil pressure!). Remove feed tube from tank and dip into canister. If the pipe is not long enough, then you can remove the tank, and using a thin plank between the seat fram and the seat rostrum, suspend the gas canister in place of the tank. Maybe it is wise to blow out the fuel lines by removing them from the pump and carb and blowing them out with compressed air. When refitting, fit the feed to the pump first, then work the pump manually to drain any muck out into a bucket, then refit the line to the carb. Clean the carb before testing. Now you should have a fully clean fuel line and tank - if this solves the problem - buy a new tank - if it doesn't, then we must all think of another workaround! good luck! -- Adrian Redmond --------------------------------------------------- CHANNEL 6 TELEVISION DENMARK (Adrian Redmond) Foerlevvej 6 Mesing DK-8660 Skanderborg Denmark --------------------------------------------------- telephone (office) +45 86 57 22 66 telephone (home) +45 86 57 22 64 telefacsimile / data +45 86 57 24 46 mobile GSM (EFP unit) +45 40 74 75 64 mobile GSM (admin) +45 40 54 22 66 mobile NMT +45 30 86 75 66 e-mail channel6@post2.tele.dk HoTMaiL (www.e-mail) channel6denmark@hotmail.com --------------------------------------------------- --------------9091742284BD9DAD8D554B5E ------------------------------[ <- Message 14 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 970912 -> Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]
